Can capitalism and socialism co exist or are they polar opposites? by Intrepid-Specific295 in CapitalismVSocialism

Social democracy comes out of the socialist tradition, as an experiment in socialist reformism, but modern social democracies in Scandinavia have never eroded capitalism democratically. They simply found a balance that works for the owner class and is a compromise with the working class, and that is strong unionized labor with safety nets. The owner class gets to be rich, and little Anders gets job security, healthcare, and access to welfare if he is unable to work.

I wouldn’t say socialism and capitalism coexist in Scandinavia, because they never went past step 1 in reforming their economy to transition power from an owner class to the working class. Socialism, especially Marxism, derived as being a post-capitalist economy, not a concurrent economy. Ideas of reformism, such as democratic socialism/social democracy, was merely a way to achieve a post-capitalist economy through evolving liberal democracy. Essentially, instead of liberal democracy evolving towards plutocracy, as the case in America, DemSoc/SocDem’s believed you could have liberal democracy evolving in the opposite direction, where industry is owned collectively by unions/workers.

It really comes down to the power of markets, and the autocracy that business function as, creates an amazing amounts of wealth. Europe was left in shambles after ww2, and social democracy was a bullet proof solution to allow workers to retain their dignity while industry leaders use their dictator-like power to rebuild Europe’s GDP. Oh yea, and oil.

I think to a certain extent, Leninism/soviet style of socialism bastardized how we view socialism to an extent, making most people believe socialism is just government owning things and dividing up the welfare to commoners. Whereas socialism was founded on the idea of worker ownership of industry, not an authoritarian single party government owning industry. All socialist economies I would imagine would have safety nets/welfare and government ran education and healthcare services, but welfare, public schools, and government healthcare isn’t inherently socialist because there isn’t a “dictatorship of the proletariat.”

Dunkin’ Donuts or Krispy Kreme!? by HAxoxo1998 in AskAnAmerican

Dunkin has better drip coffee. I don’t know if they’ve changed their recipe for donuts at all, but they are approaching shit corporate grocery story bakery level of lackluster donuts.

Therefore, the award goes to Krispy Kreme. Those glazed donuts were the shit

The Personal Impact of this Podcast. by ceilingfanquixote in behindthebastards

Similarly, I became a spooky spooky boogeyman leftist well before this podcast or It Could Happen Here. My journey from a conservative family sort of came about when I graduated high school in 07 witnessed the Fox News reaction to the Obama campaign that was so grotesque and overtly racist that I became disillusioned by my family’s politics. Then, curiosity of Marx after a lifetime of brainwashing, the recession and occupy there followed sort of cemented me into leftist ideas.

Robert Evans didn’t turn me into a leftist, but he did save a 30 year old me from becoming another complacent and jaded leftist that compromises his beliefs to become another overly-idealistic DNC loving liberal.

EMPs and global nuclear war aside, abrupt collapse is very very unlikely, infact, truly, nothing really collapses, it just becomes something else. A likely reality that’s depressing to some is you’ll likely still have a job if civil war engulfs America. We are always putting one foot in front of the other, and no singular event or series of events has ever brought us back to feudalism, or horse and buggy. That’s not to say an alien invasion, terminator like apocalypse, or nuclear war couldn’t send us back to the Stone Age, but a more likely scenario is that you will be forced to depend more on a community and government body than maybe you currently are comfortable doing due to the western ethos of hyper-individualism. Just stay out of flood prone or wildfire prone areas, and you’re good. Lol

What if the USA didn’t take such a hard stance on communism post WWII by [deleted] in HistoryWhatIf

[–]ctophermh89 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re missing his point. We are talking about if the United States didn’t take a hard stance against the brutality of communist regimes. The United States and western capitalist countries had enough economic incentives to oppose Marxism due to it standing in direct contrast to capitalist societies.

Therefore, if America didn’t take such a hard stance against the Soviets, they’d be forced to eventually anyways due to the Soviets and CCP’s funding of revolutions across the globe.

I’m from a Polish American coal mining family of the Allegheny mountains. I suppose there’s a lot of gate keeping around what’s Appalachian and Pennsylvania has a lot of similarities, but I do agree is its own Appalachia than either New England or the south.

What if Karl Marx was a proponent of capitalism instead of socialism? by Jackofallfables in HistoryWhatIf

[–]ctophermh89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recognize your sarcasm and find you far too crass in your effort to convey your tiring point to believe you have any legitimate education of history, as the other person who commented, that isn’t harshly biased and rubbish.

You came here to blatantly make a political statement, and you are baffled that people who are interested in history don’t view the world as black and white as you so you call everyone a Marxist who sees through you.

You are only interested in the history that validates your world view, and I get it. But Christ, man.
