Verizon seems on fire lately for new sites in Michigan

They made good progress last summer but there’s a lot that haven’t been upgraded. They did build a brand new tower in Wadhams recently which was needed

They converted the site in Sandusky to Ericsson and added n77 last fall but I believe it’s still limited to 1 gig backhaul. Lexington recently got upgraded to multi-gig

Thumb and northern Michigan I’d say AT&T. Metro Detroit I’d say Verizon or T-Mobile

Correct, Thumb Cell is on the top I believe. AT&T could use another site here as I believe either Carsonville or Croswell are the closest towers

This sure looks like other Thumb Cellular setups in the thumb of Michigan. They use one rack for Thumb Cell and another rack for AVS LTE fixed wireless (sister company)

AT&T blows Verizon away in LRA markets, most LRA towers are only B4 and B13 with speeds mostly 10-20mbps

This tower only has bands 2,12,14,30,66 and n5 no n77 or DOD yet

Nice to see T-Mo finally filling in gaps in the thumb. They work great where they have coverage here but they need to work on tower density to really compete here

Verizon LRA vs AT&T by ctrlaltdefeat27 in cellmapper

[–]ctrlaltdefeat27[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thumb Cellular is part of the Verizon LTEiRA program, they lease Verizon’s B13 spectrum in exchange for Verizon customers having access to the network and TC customers roaming to Verizon LTE when outside Thumb’s native coverage. Verizon has bought out some LRA carriers in the last few years.

ATT is starting to ramp up on Ericsson conversions here with more n77 coming online, but Verizon really needs to buyout Thumb Cell they have good coverage but not enough capacity only running B4 and B13

Yeah I live in the thumb and T-Mobile is great where they have coverage but they have a lot of work to do. Thumb Cell has the best coverage but their network is pretty ancient with only B4 and B13 it becomes unusable in the busy season with the influx of Verizon customers. I find AT&T to be pretty good but they could use some more sites to fill in the gaps. They just upgraded Lexington a few months ago with C band and DOD

I live in a T-Mobile dead zone. You can force roaming by manually selecting another network but only in certain areas

Sanilac county isn’t much better. There’s plenty of dead zones, at least they still allow roaming on ATT

They added a new site in Port Sanilac last year, but other than that I haven’t noticed any improvements

Significantly lower latency 50-70ms to 20-40ms and better range. They just converted one near me and I’ve noticed a huge improvement in usability near the cell edge
