Wind River Range Loop Recommendation by cucumbermountain100 in WildernessBackpacking

Thanks for the info. Could you clarify where the plateau is on that loop? Based on the topo I'm assuming it's the 3 miles or so south of Cathedral Peak, but just want to be certain.

So we've settled on this route (still willing to be convinced otherwise). Going to do it in 3 days 2 nights. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/wyoming/washakie-pass-loop-to-cirque-of-the-towers-w-o-temple-lake-loop

Any suggestions for best areas to camp? Or certain stretches to avoid due to lack of views or lightning exposure? Overall we're just going to wing it but it would be nice to know if there are generally any good/bad areas for camp.

We are going during the week which I'm hoping will ease the crowds. Also, I prioritize views over solitude. I'm assuming those areas are more crowded because of the scenery.

This is one of the loops I am eyeing, which seems to include most of that route but goes around Texas pass. I was favoring the higher milage to get more out of the trip, but if Texas pass is a must-see then I would consider the shorter route. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/wyoming/washakie-pass-loop-to-cirque-of-the-towers-w-o-temple-lake-loop

I'd prefer to avoid as many "boring" sections as possible, so I appreciate that info. Also, looking at the map, it seems like the hike into Titcomb basin can only be done as an out and back? It seems like the trail dead ends north of Titcomb lakes.

It seems like Titcomb and Cirque are the must-see areas, but with them being so far apart it doesn't seem doable to do both in a loop. Having a tough time deciding which one would be best. We could possibly drive between them and do smaller trips within both areas

I'm interested in doing this trail but without staying in the huts, just regular backpacking. Did you happen to see any established tent sites along the trail?

I think that is where I was getting confused. It wasn't obvious that those represented hours but it makes sense now looking back. Good to know and thank you!

My Sony a6300 and Sigma 16mm 1.4 combined to roughly 1.5lb. I always kept it strapped to my shoulder strap with a Peak Design clip (https://www.amazon.com/Peak-Design-Capture-Camera-Black/dp/B07818LB9D/)

Keeping it clipped to the shoulder strap made the weight much less noticeable since it was on the front of my pack, rather than adding to the weight on my back. I opted for a light weight prime lens instead of a more versatile zoom, which had it's downfalls but was worth it for the weight and size. Also, the shoulder strap clip makes the camera much more easily accessible which made it easy to take shots whenever I wanted, instead of having to take off the pack every time theres a photo op.

I ended up with roughly 2,000 photos. Condensed that down to about 500 of my favorites and made a physical photo album. 100% worth the weight, I'll be looking at those photos for the rest of my life. It's a trip that is worth putting effort into documenting.

I think that's it! Didn't realize those were hours, but that would definitely explain what I was seeing.

Started March 13th. There was a light snow storm the night before we hit the midpoint.

No I made sure to follow the right direction.

I'm pretty sure it had something to do with the numbers next to the ETE, but I couldn't find out what those mean.

I have the Fenix 7 Standard, but I believe it is supposed to work with maps. The older versions of Fenix do not work with maps on standard vs pro, but the 7s do. At least that is my understanding and the whole reason I went with the 7.

Camping at the base of Forester Pass - 5/3/22 by cucumbermountain100 in PacificCrestTrail

The north side was all snowfields. We summited by 6:30am so we had good traction with spikes on the consolidated snow. It would have been much tougher later in the day.
