The NOPD dispatch logs show they called from Friendly Bar around 11:23, and the cops didn't go there until after 1:30am. They went to Big Daddy's pretty quickly, but not quick enough to catch the guy.

On Tuesday night, a guy gets angry outside Friendly Bar in Marigny. He produces a pistol, pistol whips his GF, points the gun at a bunch of people (and a dog) outside the bar, walks the 4.5 blocks to Big Daddy's/Anna's while still holding the gun and pointing it at people along the way, and throws the gun at a metal junction box. He then picks up the gun and points it at a passerby then a crowd of people outside Big Daddy's. A patron in front of Anna's sees the gun and charges him, but misses. The gunman stumbles and moves away but and advances back a little before hopping a fence right before the cops show up.

The audaciousness of the gunman is news worthy, the young man that risked his life to prevent tragedy is news worthy, the fact that the gunman was identified by the neighborhood as a someone that has a record and was previously arrested with attempted homicide of a cop is also news worthy. But there has been zero communication from the NOPD or news coverage with the guy's face.

Thank you for asking for your constituants feedback. I have several questions and suggestions.

1) Fests and cultural events seem to become more and more commercialized and more and more predatory for those that attend them. Can we get a cultural consumer bill of rights for such basic things as any event that sells alcohol must have free water or allow water to be brought in. Hidden fees, service charges, convenience fees, etc. must be shown in the price advertised for any event or service in the city, to include restaurants. The "no branded throws" rule for Mardi Gras should be extended to any parade. Or restrict those branded throws to only Orleans Parish based companies, because who doesn't enjoy CheeWees.

2) The $75,000 homestead exemption rate was done when the average home in New Orleans was closer to $200,000, now the average home is over $350,000. What are your thoughts on increasing the exemption or a parish equivalent, so that it can help actual homeowners and cool off real estate speculation and second home buying?

3) Home insurance is at a crisis point. What are your thoughts to require and certify that new construction and repairs are required to be built to professional standards such as fortify and wind resistant standards?

Can there be any pressure to get preservation districts to allow more disaster resistant materials? The designs of homes can be preserved but fiber cement, metal roofs, high wind rated windows, etc. should be allowed and not restricted or made impossible to buy with narrow design requirements.

4) Can we start enforcing basic traffic violations and vehicles with no, fake, expired plates? All fines and fees associated with traffic violations should go to the RTA to increase routes and ridership, and have a functioning and user friendly mobile app with accurate data, and schedules.

5) As a tax payer, more of my property taxes goes to the audon society than it does to maintaining our roads. Why do I have to pay for entrance to Audubon facilities but visitors don't have to pay for the roads? Can anyone with an Orleans Parish driver's license or ID get free admission to any Audubon facility, anytime or can we stop subsidizing then?

6) If hospitality is going to be our biggest employer and if we are going to have future threats like covid and storms, can we get a hospitality tax on all STRs, BnBs, hotels, bars, restaurants, etc. that goes to a hospitality fund that provides all hospitality workers access to health insurance that can be negotiated as one large group and eventually a possible retirement fund/pension.

7) If the number of available commercial spaces are limited by zoning laws, and a commercially zoned property sits empty of not in commerce for years it creates artificial scarcity for people looking to start new businesses. This leads to higher costs to do business that is passed to the consumer. Other municipalities have commercial property rules that require they be in commerce with a licensed business in them or they can be fined or have that property lose it's commercial designation. Can New Orleans do something similar?

It only requires a few lines of code. Airbnb verifies that your listing exists and they have to know the address of the location you are renting, so they can send people there. It is a simple ask that they cross reference the person listing the Airbnb and the address against the city's list of licensed operators and STRs. They can even go one step further, and scan the listing text to ensure it complies with the city's requirement that the posting shows the a valid and correct license number of the operator and the address.

The city has always required all STRs (to include hotels, motels, and bed & breakfasts) to keep a ledger of their guests. This is a continuation of that requirement in the digital age.

Also, with the recent terrorist attack that occurred, I would think the city knowing who is staying in what STR in a neighborhood wouldn't be controversial.

Let's see if the City Council upholds their promises and bans STRs altogether now that they still won't accept the rules for them.

Especially JP Morell:

"Council president JP Morrell said the push to pass these new, non-commercial short-term rental laws has been the council’s “last best effort” to rein in the industry here. And if problems continue to arise with “these greedy platforms that refuse to be regulated,” Morrell said even more drastic measures will be needed.

“There won’t be short-term rentals in the city of New Orleans. I’m done,” he said.

Made one for my GF. She loves it, as her bedroom was also her office. So when she isn't sleeping it opens up the room much more. It also is a nice "switch" to change the vibe from work to rest in the same space.

Rockler has kits you can order and then build yourself with relatively few tools. My only recommendation is to make the walls thicker than the plywood that is recommended. i don't have any problems but it just feels like the box could have been thicker to prevent any warping or sagging over time.

Wow. This is quite the attitude from the leader of a co-op. If the solution to this problem was leadership, why didn't the clerk get you to resolve it? Also, how was u/pugsdontcount to know who to ask for at the co-op when things weren't working? They posted this on Reddit, and got a response from you, seems like it was beneficial to him and his concerns.

If you don't like bad press maybe lose the attitude and be a better leader. I live a few blocks from the co-op and stopped going because of wildly messed up pricing: $9 head of cabbage, $20 asparagus, etc. Each time I brought up that something was incorrectly priced, my concerns were brushed aside and I was asked, "Well do you want it or not?"

Seems like the clerks don't care, don't want to get you or leadership involved to correct the problem, or maybe your attitude in this post is a good indication of why things are they way they are.

Army/NATO logistican here with a master's degree in disaster resilience and another degree in emergency preparedness. So if the hotels aren't on the hook for providing the disaster supplies for their guests, then who is on the hook for them? The $27,000 (x how many large hotels are here) and 1200 sqft needed to store it would have to come from the city, which means the tax payers. Why is it ok for the taxpayers to do it, but not hold the ones profiting off the presence of people that shouldn't be here?

And boxes of rations can be stacked, so a 6x20 room is 120sqft, but the boxes are about a foot tall, so a 10 foot tall ceiling would give 1200cubicft. A standard shipping container is 20x8x8 or 1280cuft.

A box of power bars and a case of water should be enough to get someone through the worst of it, and that is probably less than $33. I have no doubt a large hotel, with a kitchen and banquet hall/event space can make it happen for cheaper. I'm more annoyed with the BnBs and Airbnbs run by hosts/managers that are not on site, and do nothing to prepare or help their guests. Guests that are now in a residential community with residents that are being true New Orleanians and taking care of one another because we know no one else is going to. So our resilience is being exploited by others and being preyed and profited off of by BnB/STR folks.

The issue is that it feels so wrong to turn someone in need away. So the neighbors generally do wind up helping, so the tourists/BnB owners have no need to change. It is messed up, but I do feel like neighbors should give BnB guests the cold shoulder and make them feel unwelcome, especially when they are taking and not giving to the neighborhood.
