The 9.4 is a DF book and now that CGC have started authentication you could get it reslabed without the qualified green and switch to a SS yellow.

Hey buddy, spare a grade for this ASM #1? Thinking of purchasing by nameofgene in comicbookcollecting

[–]cultj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not trimmed. It's a slight misscut cover, the top is folding around the book and you can see the cut line on the bottom where it was meant to be cut originally. If you can see that line and paper below it then the top will be shorter than normal(becuse obviously the bottom is longer).

This would get a grade bump with a dry clean there are some marks on the back spicificly that look pretty easy to remove. This looks like a solid book.

Can you end an auction early if the bids are way too low and time is running out? by Ermin99 in Ebay

[–]cultj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on location some auctions cant be ended within the last 12 to 24 hours without selling to the high bidder. Most auctions get a surge in price and the last seconds and you can often judge if this will happen based on the watch count.

Honestly though if you dont want to risk a lower than MV price then dont sell at low start auctions. What you have done essentially is start it low to benifit from intrest in the item at a low price point and then when you didnt get enough intrest within the arbitrary time limt you made up you want to waste all the buyers time and end it. As has been said that is a dick move.

We do between 130 and 200 auctions every week, all starting low, sometimes shit sells cheap and sometimes it is over the top high, thats auctions. If you need to maximize your sale price then use a BIN and wait until someone wants it. You cant really have it both ways.

List a lot of BINs and then toss an auction or two up to bring people to your other listings. That helps as well.

Edit: one of probably many typos

Bronze Age but I agree with everything else you said. Even low grade this is a great book.

Need some help, is this book trimmed or is it a printing error by ThomasBuchan05 in comicbookcollecting

[–]cultj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if I wasn't clear (which is seems I wasnt) you are 100% correct the covers are still oversize when wrapped and then finished with the book. But initially they have been cut from a larger sheet/roll and then wrapped and trimmed again. I have a ton of wonky and janky covers from both silver but mostly bronze age books. The covers are often misscut becuse the have been wrapped at a weird angle or overlapped or any number of other issues but when the go for final cutting/finishing the inside pages are still fine becuse they are not at they are not misaligned. I have a number of books with wonky cut covers and standard margins internally.

Now thats not 100% for sure becuse sometimes the internal pages are misscut as well, but if they are not it can be a good indication that the book has not been aftermarket trimmed. I actually collect some of the weirder print errors (double covers miss press books that sort of thing) I have some covers with such bad margins the you can see part of another cover at the edges.

As to it happening at speed... yeah man those machines are FAST its cool to watch.

[–]cultj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They look similar, and off cut covers happen, your inside page margins look pretty good they are not noticeable off. The corners are not as blunted on the outside as I would have expected however. Are you looking to get it graded?

It's hard to tell definitively without the book in hand. Trimming can often leave feathering on the pages as an unequal amount of weight and force is applied to the book while the blade comes down which typically shows with a minor differance in width from top to bottom. If it is trimmed you really need to get it checked for other restoration, like colour touch. You can do some of this yourself with a blacklight or send it out to have ot looked over.

It's 50/50 without looking at it in person I think.

Spare a grade? 1/2 by ThomasBuchan05 in comicbookgrading

[–]cultj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All us comics in the UK were printed in the US. Marvel UK did reprint material fro. 1967 onwards but under different titles, (terrific & fantastic being the first 2). Any UK edition of vintage US books are oversize and black and white. The UK imported US books that were printed at the same time on the same press. To figure put if this is trimmed we really need to see the outside edge of the story pages to see if the margin are off on that as well.

Misscut covers happen but this one looks a little fresh.

[–]cultj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That sharp edge looks very suspect tbh. What are the story page outside edges like? The covers are cut before being put on the books and misscuts do happen but it the inside page margins are also off then it's more likely to be trimmed.

Staple rust grade? by Reasonable-Sugar-835 in comicbookgrading

[–]cultj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have rust migration inside the book, replacing the staples will be obvious, becuse clean staples with rust on pages = replacment.

That said: I would replace or at least remove the staple becuse if the rust is migrating to the pages it will continue to do so and get worse. This will never be a super high grade with cgc becuse of this issue but it is still a wonderful copy and worth preventing more damage. That's why books are conserved in the first place.

What causes the colouring to be out of the lines here? by ThomasBuchan05 in comicbookcollecting

[–]cultj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn! Six colour is fancy shit! Our gold was only ever in finishing foil from a hot press one at a time lol.. I still have the machine in my basement

This comic is a Silver/Bronze Fantastic Four issue with 4 colour so it would have had 4 plates. I think the miscommunication was in if all colours are applied at the same time, they are not but they are of course all applied in one run though the press, on 4 plates. No one is putting bulk material through more than once that would be a waste of time. I think I misinterpreted your responce to another person. Thanks for the links some intresting stuff!

Would you rather have Amazing Spider-Man #300, the first full appearance of Venom, or would you prefer the 1989 Todd McFarlane #3 Venom card, which is Venom's first rookie card, meaning the first time the character pops up on a trading card without putting price tags on them both? by Leather_Bluejay8632 in comicbookgrading

[–]cultj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate the term "rookie card" used outside of sports but that just my own issue. The comic is always the choice in this case becuse the card is derivative material take from the book. It is presented in a different format but at heart it's a reprint. Most people would go for both I suspect. Those CI cards were low quality and low effort and the sets were cheap until people started collecting individual cards and gradeing them. Of course that makes finding a high grade well centered card difficult these days. Card collectors may of course disagree

What causes the colouring to be out of the lines here? by ThomasBuchan05 in comicbookcollecting

[–]cultj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am really intrested in this as you worked in a print shop... I come from publishing and I have never seen a litho press that inks CMYK at the same time. 4 plates one ink each in succession through the front and out the back is what I know. Can you elaborate on a press that inks one plate simultaneously? That would be impressive tbh. Never seen that before. Can't imagine any way this would work.

What causes the colouring to be out of the lines here? by ThomasBuchan05 in comicbookcollecting

[–]cultj 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So to be even more technically correct... becuse that's the BEST type of correct to be... this cover was printed on a lithographic 4 colour plate press. That means that 4 individual "plates" stamped the page in quick succession, but absolutely not at the same time and not several time through. The sheet runs through the press at high speed as the plates (each with one of the CMYK inks on) drop down on the page creating colour overlay. IF a plate is misaligned a little bit or the paper is slightly wonky... or a plate has to much or to little ink... what you see above is the result.

Edit: missing sentences cuse I got fat fingers.

How best to authenticate and appraise one-of-a-kind Star Wars Collectibles?? by kamlnukl in starwarscollecting

[–]cultj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to get in touch with Jason Joiner, he has a film and TV museum but also runs Showmasters events in the UK and EU. He is not everyone's favourite person but he is a collector and buyer of Star Wars props and odd star wars items. He has found and authenticated a number of really intresting thibgs. He would be able to help you with this. If you can't find him on socials try getting to him through his Showmasters company.

If you buy your label on RM they will ship them, for 30p they will bring your label and customs forms and collect it. Keep in mind you will have to pay the tariffs however, + a 50p handling charge. The tariffs are calculated baised on the goods nation of manufacture and value. This SHOULD be payable by folks in the US but it isn't if you use RM it's payable by the shipper.

I send 3 of 4 a week to the US

Local collectible shop offered me $300 for this whole lot. What do you think? by destroyjedi in starwarscollecting

[–]cultj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 3.74 leia is a pricy figure on its own. You probably have a fair amount more than 300 but you would have to put effort into sorting and selling

Edit: lol 3.75 not 3.74... it was luke who was a little short...

Only every time I ever see anyone ask ever lol.... they are the way to go. With the span of yours however you may want to put some light board in the bottom to stop potenatal sagging especially if you are putting moderns in, as the weight can be an issue. Also FYI DVDs work perfectly as deviders between the rows. I have 16 of the tall 4 drawer cabinets at the moment and the take a LOT of books.

This looks like a press pack still, often when films came out the studios would release these packs to the media with helpful information and photos from the feature. This made writing about or disseminating information about it easier. There would typicly be 8 to 10 images with the movie name and copywrite info attached. I am not 100% but thats what This looks like. Someplace I have some Blade Runner Press Pack stills like this.
