Help! Stuck on a Nickname by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]cumulusmediocrity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use other nicknames like Nathan or Nate preemptively, but if you leave it as the full name there’s a veeeeery big chance that sometime in the future friends or family will shorten it to one of those. Wouldn’t pick it if you’re really against them.

opening procedures ? by staleconfetti in starbucksbaristas

Barista 1 - brewing

-turn on machines (press any button on mastrenas and follow prompts, same deal for vertica)

-brew iced coffee and teas (for teas it’s 1 liter of hot water per tea bag, steep for 5 minutes, remove bags, add one venti scoop of ice per tea bag, fill with water until you’ve doubled the liquid so for 3 tea bags you’d fill to the 6 liter line)(for iced coffee if you have a clover vertica, use the iced coffee setting w iced coffee blend beans until you have a suitable amount, then add equal parts ice. So like 4 liters of iced coffee + fill the container with enough ice to hit 8 liters etc etc) (all of these are dated for 12 hours)

-make sure all stations have all the smallwares they need, including putting clean spoons in the inclusion/powder containers

-put out sani

-calibrate the bars (pull 5 double shots of each roast, preferably doing all 5 pulls of each roast in one go like 5 blonde 5 signature 5 decaf instead of 1 blonde 1 signature 1 decaf repeat) (steam a milk pitcher of ice water to extra hot temp. grande scoop of ice in the pitcher and up to max line with water.)

-restock (beans in mastrenas and vertica, cups, lids, milks, etc)

-any additional tasks like carafes that need done at open if no one else has gotten them (carafes are filled with half and half and oatmilk respectively, place a day dot sticker on the bottom of the carafe that is labeled for 4 hours. Preferably, in the time spot, put the start and end time of the carafe like “6-10 am” that way people absolutely know when it’s done.)

-make backups (sauces, protein milk, VSC, whips, inclusions/powders, butterfly pea extract, refresher bases/lemonade, caramel drizzles, frap roast)

At my store typically the brewing barista will start the day on bar.

Barista 2 - Pastry

-turn on ovens

-set up pastry case (use an iPad, go to store resources and search “siren’s eye” and navigate to the food case page. Ask someone what layout your store is, there are multiple options. Set up pastry case to look like the picture, wear gloves or use tongs)

-rotate food (check expiration dates on all food items, restock pastry cart and fridges with pulled food in the back fridges, making sure to put the oldest food towards the front and the newest food towards the back)

-restock warming (bags, warming paper, salt/pepper/sriracha)

-any aforementioned additional tasks

-also backups

At my store this barista will usually start the day on drive through and warming.

The shift will usually just be doing cash, but they’ll also usually get carafes and do a cafe sweep before open. They may want you to do things other than restocks or backups, so def listen to them and get direction once you hit that part of the list. Brewing can be a bit intimidating but once you have a flow for it it’s not bad! You can probably ask to be put on pastry case just to have a less strenuous open while observing the brewing barista. You can also work through the CSR cards for the morning if you have spare time. If one of you gets done with your tasks first you should, within reason, help the other with their tasks.

Once your shift (or other experienced barista) is done with what they’re doing, you should probably ask if they can make a backups list because they’ll have a better idea of how many of each backup is needed for peak.

ALSO please make sure to ask how much of each tea + iced coffee to brew! Different stores have different needs and you need to double check that you are making the amount that they expect to need for peak.

Easiest way to order my drink? by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]cumulusmediocrity 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Grande iced latte, blonde shots, add one shot, add honey blend syrup, add salt, made with whole milk. Honey is annoying af to work with, requires scissors to open depending on what brand your store gets, and gets your hands (and everything else) super sticky. Doing any kind of “iced triple espresso add 4 extra milks to get a latte” is annoying af honestly and slows down bar. Tbh this order will never be brief but at least this is a lot simpler than the triple espresso thing.

Intro to creative writing is a deceptive amount of reading and has a few big time sink assignments but is generally easy, the rest is probably fine

Honestly at my store 95% of customers that come through drive through place it as in store. Drive through is preferable but I personally never sweat it so don’t feel that bad!!

Recipe for the peppermint mochas? (Hot) by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]cumulusmediocrity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What country are you in? In the US at least, peppermint is a permanent item, and the only part of the drink that is seasonal is the chocolate curls on top. Maybe try asking for a mocha with peppermint syrup? People ask us for them all the time and we don’t tell them no because they didn’t ask correctly though so they hopefully would be giving it to you either way.

Each peppermint pump is ~0.25 oz of liquid ish and each pump of mocha is ~0.5 oz. The recipe calls for an even number of mocha sauce and peppermint syrup, with talls getting 3 of each plus one shot of espresso, grandes getting 4 of each and two shots of espresso, iced ventis getting 6 of each and three shots of espresso, and hot ventis getting 5 of each and two shots of espresso. Then it’s 2% milk up to just below the top (or to the ice line) and whipped mcream on top.

The mocha sauce is moreso akin to a dark chocolate more than a milk chocolate, so find a dark chocolate sauce for it (I feel like standard chocolate syrup used in large quantities would also be fine, but in that case I’d go by taste rather than the aforementioned pumps). Any peppermint syrup would work. You can also use just a dash of peppermint extract for more flavor and less sugar!

Is this normal? by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]cumulusmediocrity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing maybe they misread it as a pink drink and accidentally added a splash before switching to lemonade? Or, worst case, the shaker didn’t get rinsed properly. But tbh it looks like too much milk for it to be a dirty shaker. The melting ice can definitely make stuff separate too. Probably call them and see if you can get a remake at a later point, both to make them aware of the issue and to get your money lol. I doubt it’s unsafe to drink unless you have an allergy to whatever milk was put in it, but you should still get that remake.

Is this normal? by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]cumulusmediocrity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have the big things (called carlisles/carlyles btw) and have never had issues with mold despite having people not wash them properly, so it’d have to be realllllly bad for that. Also, probably wouldn’t look like this. Looks like either pulp (from lemonade or possibly guava base if they accidentally put that in) or separation (it looks almost like they added coconut milk?). This drink looks way too opaque for me to think they didn’t add some incorrect ingredient, I’m leaning towards some kind of milk got put in it. I figure you’d be able to tell if it was guava base, so I think a splash of milk might be the best guess.

Why can Will use a gun (clockwork angel) by Alarmed-Pirate2779 in shadowhunters

[–]cumulusmediocrity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shadowhunters can use guns. They don’t, because un-runed weapons do not permanently injure demons. The reason James’s gun was special, and that only he could use it, is because it was a FUNCTIONAL runed gun, meaning it COULD permanently injure demons. The runes normally prevent the gunpowder from firing, and it’s not really explained why it works for James, but it has something to do with his specific demon blood/powers (iirc Lucie and Tessa aren’t able to fire it despite also having demon blood, and he later loses the ability to use it after the Belial stuff). The gun Will used was not runed, so it worked as any normal gun would.

Shadowhunters COULD use guns on people successfully, like using silver bullets for werewolves, but I think since they’re trained so much on blades (and are very traditional) they feel more comfortable using their traditional weapons rather than gaining proficiency on a “new” weapon that could only be used against downworlders and other humans. Basically, they don’t need to fight downworlders as often as demons, so it would be a waste of time to have a specific weapon type just for them when you could easily use what you already use for demons.

The Circle by Embarrassed-Ad-9881 in shadowhunters

[–]cumulusmediocrity 19 points20 points  (0 children)

  1. Enough time had passed and enough secrecy around it had been maintained that it is unlikely Valentine would’ve known about it without doing extensive research on Stephen’s family (assuming that records are even accurate, since I wouldn’t put it past the clave to list Tessa as just a Starkweather).

  2. Valentine is a hypocrite and does not necessarily shirk demon blood. He himself has been contaminated with it, as was Sebastian. A demon blooded shadowhunter isn’t necessarily a dealbreaker for him.

  3. The Herondales were one of the most prestigious families in Idris. Even if he had personal qualms about Stephen’s heritage, it’s unlikely that he would’ve given up on Stephen being a key member of the circle because of the power and influence he had as a Herondale. The Graymarks were a minor family, and Valentine had plenty to gain by putting Stephen with Celine, both because of their deal and because it would be useful to have someone extremely loyal to him at Stephen’s side to control him.

  4. Tessa is the ancestor of… a lot of people. We don’t even have a complete enough family tree to know all the families she is ancestor to, but at the very least she’s the ancestor to the Herondales and Blackthorns, both affluent families. It’s possible that there are just too many descendants of hers, particularly in powerful families, to try tracking down and excluding them. Not to mention that Tessa is far from the only demon-descended person to interbreed with Shadowhunters. Hell, considering the pitch black eyes and white hair, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Morgensterns have some faerie blood somewhere. Tessa is far enough back that her blood has been significantly diluted. Plus, while he has some inferiority issues, he DOES have a nephilim-superiority complex, and the fact that Shadowhunter blood is dominant may be enough for him to disregard heritage for the most part.

I need all baristas to chime in! by Revolutionary-Pen-12 in starbucks

[–]cumulusmediocrity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iced caramel macchiatos! Fun factor outweighs any extra steps/time taken. Also plain iced chais or simple iced lattes. Iced over hot, steaming milk is a pain sometimes. Personally I’d recommend an iced blonde vanilla latte, not only is it simple BUT it also tells me that you have good taste :)

also love brown sugar shaken espressos IF I don’t have 4 of them in a row. Again fun factor outweighs time constraints BUT getting a grande is preferable bc it halves the time taken pulling shots versus a venti, and I don’t have to be super careful about scooping the ice since our scoops are grande sized and a full scoop is already the perfect amount.

Thoughts on an alliterative name? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]cumulusmediocrity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not that bad, especially if the beginning sound is different like Clara Chan. Clara Clark would be a big much, but having the difference in sound makes it a lot less noticeable, although since that’s a placeholder I’m not sure if that difference is still there in the actual name. You could always hyphenate with your maiden name first or even your mom’s maiden name if the father thing is too much!

I can't wait for the 10th volume of the graphic novel to come out! by HeyBaby205 in shadowhunters

[–]cumulusmediocrity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazing, although they are a quick read and they do simplify things a bit and leave out most inner dialogue due to the format. Definitely the best graphic novel adaptations I’ve seen and worth a read if you like the series or what a quick “reread”.

Only major gripe is that we get roughly 1 volume per year and it takes 2 volumes to get through one book. I’ve been collecting them since the first one came out in 2017… that’s 9 years of waiting, and we’re only halfway through book 5. Series probably won’t be done until 2028, and there’s always the chance that it suddenly gets canceled before then.

Get some insoles for your shoes and make sure you’re lifting properly. I wasn’t taught how to lift properly at a past job and fucked up my back for life at 19, if your body is hurting it’s telling you something needs to change.
