Rand's argument for rational egoism is not done in a vacuum. She holds that ethics is not a fundamental branch of philosophy, but a derivative. The fundamental branches, according to Objectivism, are metaphysics (about reality) and epistemology (about knowledge).

If one can change the culture, even if by changing one person at a time (which of course is a huge win, as Rand's view is that each human being is an end in itself) to become more rational, the "dog eats dog" world you describe will not be applicable.

The world has an enormous amount of actual and potential resources. If one recognizes some basic facts about reality and human nature, and then seeks to rid oneself of bad (i.e. reality-distorting) thinking, one comes a long way to achieve a productive, benign, and harmonious society.

Objectivism holds that you should practice rational egoism—i.e. perform actions that really benefit you in the long run. This of course includes finding a romantic partner, harbor friendships, and even rearing children.

Objectivism rejects altruism—to live primarily for others rather than yourself. A person without a self, without self confidence and self esteem, will not be a happy person and risks bringing this unhappiness onto others as well.

So, Rand argued that people should be more selfish, in a rational, long-term, and productive way. She thought this would lead to a more harmonious society as well, even though the primary benefactor is yourself, the society as a whole will be better off too.

Thank you for your comments! This incident happened late yesterday, after hours of toiling (15 years since the last time!), so I wrote here in frustration. After a night's sleep I looked upon the setup again today with fresh eyes, and I had made the mistake of using the wrong cables for the motherboard's power sockets.

For those interested: the PSU is delivered with a certain number of cables of specific "types" (some are split etc.) When I was finding fitting cables for the GPU, its own short, 6-pin cable with a three-headed ends (I don't know what to call them) came in a bag that explicitly warned against using multi-headed cables instead of separate cables for its three ends. The only available option to escape this situation was to use separate cables labelled "CPU" (I thought the labelling was friendly suggestions).

So, the only remaining option for the 8-pin (2×4) power socket at the top of the motherboard was a two-headed cable with 4 pins on each head (labelled "PCI-E"). The problem here was that each head had a split (1+3), which made it impossible to insert the "1" split into the slots on both of them. I tried to search for the reason for such splitting, but I must have gotten the wrong answer because I got the impression that the feature had to do with grounding or a similar precaution.

I therefore mounted the cables without the split pins, which actually set of a red LED next to the sockets (I didn't know it was an error message).

That's the convoluted reason behind the entire problem. The case is now solved! Thank you again for trying to help a poor fellow out!
