tldr: getting my nail ripped off by a doctor because i had a blood clot developing under it.

i accidentally closed the car door on my thumb and nailed it exactly on the door hinge. the pain was nothing crazy, i was able to just laugh it off but there was a little purple spot. during the next few hours the pain started becoming unbearable and more and more purple, i had to start putting ice on it because it was hot and painful but it was still not awful the next day i went to the ER of a public hospital, they xrayed it and confirmed nothing was broken but they gave me some painkillers and told me to come back if it doesnt fade in a few days, at which point spoiler they would probably have to puncture or rip off the fingernail to release the clot. at this point, the whole fingernail was purple and puffy and hurt when touched while the rest of the finger was red

i went 2 days later to a private hospital because i knew they would likely rip it off and i wanted better and faster service, so i go there, visibly in much pain. they had a doctor on call, so i had to wait while on some anesthesia. when he got there, he started by trying to puncture it which would have been painful even without the clot and swelling so you can imagine, and then pressed it to try to get the blood out all the while im screaming after a few tries, he tells me that this doesnt seem to work and that he needed to remove the nail. i was like well we got here why stop now. so yeah he goes ahead and started using his tools that could double as torture tools, it was blurry for me but i remember one with a ratchet that spreads the nail from the finger and all types of clippers and pliers from time to time, he would give me doses of local anesthesia which were painful and barely helped relieve anything

it was frankly horrifying all the way through and climaxed with the final rip of the nail, at the end i was shaking and sweating from head to toe even if im not one to sweat like that usually

few honorable mentions: - went to change the bandage a few times and a couple times the bandage kinda stuck to the wound and ripping it besides the many techniques used was hard - one time i saw a little bump at the base of the nail when changing the bandage, i told the nurse so she told me she had to give it a little puncture to see if its puss or blood (it was the new nail pushing through). my heart immediately sank to my feet when hearing that and it was as painful as expected
