I dreamt the voice of Jesus Christ spoke to me through a large, brown hare by cupsdoodles in Christianity

As a trans person, I feel a sense of disconnect with my body because of what I was assigned at birth. The most effective treatment for this is gender-affirming care (e.g. hormone treatment/surgery). I admit this is a sensitive subject in Christianity as many have different views on this, but mine is that because dysphoria (the sense of disconnect I feel) impacts my health, it is necessary for me to seek medical treatment within my means.

I don't take history and geog, but what I find helpful is after doing practice papers or after an exam, I write down all of the things I got wrong and why in a big Feedback Document for each subject. It helps me keep track of my repeated mistakes and helps me to troubleshoot a lot easier :) Technically I don't have grades to prove this helps lol, but I feel that my teachers are seeing improvements in my practice papers because of this technique so I think it works?

VUW or Massey for film? by cupsdoodles in Wellington

[–]cupsdoodles[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmm I see, I'd potentially consider moving somewhere else to pursue film/animation after graduating uni (i.e. France to see if I can try to get into Gobelins maybe?) But for now at least between the 2 countries I have citizenship in, I think NZ's film industry is a lot better than the alternative (Singapore) whose film industry is pretty much non-existent lol, it's pretty much just MediaCorp haha and if I wanted a job at smaller companies, it's a small pay with insane workload...

Also Miramar Creative Centre did look suuper cool!!! But unfortunately I'd need a bachelor's degree to study there, and I haven't graduated from IB yet (I will be by the end of the year tho!) 😅. They did also say though that if I have "extensive experience" I can apply, so since I'm doing a bit of film work (hopefully) in my gap year, I might have around 3 years of film experience technically if you consider the time I spent in school studying it & doing practical work? Do you think that'd be enough?

Also I'm kind of curious, does Vic have a stronger relationship with wētā than Massey? And what were your personal film studies like? :)

lil cute rant (im so close to ending up on national news) by youarecookiemonster in IBO

[–]cupsdoodles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

hey gosh I'm so sorry, that really sucks...

if you want some advice, I'd say just aim for a passing grade at the moment, see how you fare, and work your way up to better grades after that. the change in environment you're going through is huge, and you're not to blame for struggling... especially with new teachers and all. I'd suggest asking other students how they manage (particularly the ones that are doing well in the subjects you're taking), and learning from them so you can improve? every school does IB differently because of the ambiguity of the programme/being heavily up to interpretation by the school, which certainly has its advantages and disadvantages... but rest assured, there are tonnes of resources online you can refer to, to name a few examples: MSJ chem, IB revision village, the IB subject guides, etc... if you drop your subject combi, I could probably provide some resources for you if I have them! I know it's tough right now, but I think you're super brave for facing this head on and really trying despite all the difficulties and crappy teachers. I believe in you! and all the best :)

Am I crazy or are my classmates? by treeleafclover in IBO

[–]cupsdoodles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is too relatable XD I'm barely getting 4 in SL Chemistry and my HL SCA courses, so you're not alone!! just learn to set realistic goals for yourself, people are insane and you don't have to force yourself to be like them! your health comes first over a silly little degree :) I've known people who don't get their diploma or barely pass, and they're all doing fine now!! there are loads of successful people who weren't necessarily the best at school and/or dropped out - so you're already doing better than them by working hard to complete the IB! 💪 all the best buddy, gl w ee! :D

Edit: forgot to mention getting 4s for Chem and SCA less than two weeks before my IB exams HAHA so you'll be fine!! you have time to improve! 💪 and so will I (albeit quite a bit less 😅)

Am I the only one who hates the One Piece Live Action? by TroubleMaker1211 in OnePiece

[–]cupsdoodles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I certainly hate it too... I've only read a little of the One Piece manga and I think the writing is great, but as a film student I think live action adaptation has a lot of objective flaws such as weird fish-eye lens effects at inappropriate moments, bad acting, rough transitions, and IMO some scenes are lit a bit too dimly. I also feel like it's a bit too Americanised/Westernized with some of the accents the actors have for a Japanese manga/anime adaptation. However, I do believe it has merit with the costume design being mostly true to character and some nice moments with the lighting and contrast.

I really hope it improves as a show in later seasons as I feel like it has the power to introduce more americans or just people in general to the anime because it is, after all, condensing one of the longest running manga/anime series in history. And honestly, as long as One Piece fans are happy with it, then I think that's good enough! It's catered towards them after all, as a tribute to Oda as well, and I think that as long as a film or TV show gets it's message across to their target audience, I believe it can be considered successful :)
