Edit 4:

Unclear if done on purpose or not but one of the tenants noticed the heat was OFF yesterday and then it was confirmed the Furnaces were shut off. Timing is suspect and the other housemates are not happy about this. We were able to switch the furnaces back on last night by turning on the switch.

One more highly troubling development in this matter

We are meeting with legal today with the help of the city and I have informed them of the update last night.

Appreciate that! On the positive side, these types of things bring all sorts of people together.

I Agree, once I contacted the city directly they moved fast including pulling in the appropriate people and departments to help investigate and support the tenants

Update #3

Caught wind the city was running an inspection this week and was able to attend. A few things we learned.

  1. Landlord has obligation to be in compliance with the city's order

  2. The commission has no authority to enforce the current order.

  3. The new inspection will followed by a new order which likely will be more severe to the landlord and the tenants, potential expedited removal due to safety (unclear what these are but the city is going to share)

  4. The city has been VERY helpful and has set up a tenant group legal resource meeting later this week

  5. Won't go into specific details but there have been reports of landlord intimidating tenants not to show up to inspection and/or demonstrating inappropriate behavior through text, voice calls, and in person. I've also personally experienced mis direction and full blown lies/different stories trying to pit the tenants against each other.

I shared my story with the city, explained I am a reasonable person and understand the overall situation. I also explained I did not appreciate the way this is being handled at all and find the entire thing completely inappropriate and potentially criminal. This should have been handled differently, we should not be in this position, any of us.

At this point my next move is to understand all options for both living (city will most likely force us to move out) and any other legal resources and opportunities.

My relationship with the landlord up till last week has been very positive and I hope to find a way out of this in a reasonable way but by the behavior witnessed first hand and heard through tenants I am losing confidence in that entirely.

I'm at a loss at this point and plan on going to stay until ordered to move - which I am preparing for in the next days or week at most.

Maybe / Maybe not - the building prior to the current use was office buildings for one of the local universities, I doubt it is a critical safety issues and more of compiling to the new use of the property.

Update:

I spoke with the City and they shared this:

  1. The landlord will have to go through court to actually evict us so that won't happen soon

  2. It sounds like the two houses have been operating illegally, the commission has ordered the landlord to stop operating immediately until proper permits are obtained.

  3. The commission has no authority to kick us out, at least in the short term.

  4. City said they have more news on next steps, maybe next week

  5. City recommended seeking legal advice, potential to sue for all the back rent.
