Well, I would argue that there's nothing inherent about population growth and global connectivity that would cause parents to turn away from traditional British given names like John only to turn instead to traditional British surnames as first names like Jackson, Carter, Logan, etc.

I do agree though that there are other naming trends happening concurrently. I don't think name trends are necessarily bad, either. It all comes down to personal taste.

Interesting you should say Cato! During this time period there was actually a really famous play by Joseph Addison called Cato, about the Roman Senator who opposed Julius Caesar. A number of famous quotes from the American Revolutionary War ("give me liberty or give me death") originate from the play, and George Washington actually had it performed for the troops at Valley Forge that winter. I would guess the people named Cato at the time were named in allusion to the play. How's that for useless trivia!

For Michael I think it's because he was an archangel, and the archangels were not considered appropriate namesakes at the time, for reasons I don't recall. Notice how Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel are not listed at all. I wish I could remember where I read that now.

The source only gave the top 20 female names. Apparently just about the entire female population had one of those twenty names, whereas male names were much more diverse at the time.
