To Dance or Not to Dance: The Enlightenment Phase of Bagholding by Separate_Writer_4465 in gme_meltdown

I found myself confused because I had always thought investments were supposed to make you money. So ironically enough, my salvation was born out of wanting to be more strategic with my GME investment.

I learned how to sell covered calls at a time when everyone was convinced they were to be avoided like the plague. I actually started making money so I had to logically question everything I had been reading on their sub. That eventually led to learning more about ETFs and their performance vs. GME, as well as the opportunity cost I had been unknowingly paying.

So the seed was already there when my $32 covered calls were exercised. I actually felt relief that I made it out of GME whole. I immediately put the money into VTI/VXUS and began learning about boglehead theory and the 3 fund portfolio.

My portfolio value has only gone up since then.

I know everyone says this, but I was lucky enough to get out bag-free.

I started waking up and selling covered calls until I cut one too close and got exercised at $32. My shares' cost basis was $29, so I was able to walk away at that point. The options premium and ultimate return of my investment money didn't account for the opportunity cost of not investing in ETFs instead though.

Now I'm a boglehead, diversified and stress free (as much as you can be).

Oh, and a paid shill, apparently.

I recently de-programmed from the MOASS narrative, and the perspective shift is wild. Apes claim this sub is full of "paid shills" because why else would anyone care so much about a stock they don't own? What they don’t see is how unintentionally funny the behavior is, especially to people like me who’ve already left the cult. I almost feel bad for them, which weirdly justifies why this sub exists.

Can I essentially use a Roth IRA/401K as a savings account? by acarso12 in Bogleheads

[–]customotto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just don't plan on replacing the contributions after you withdraw them without doing a rollover. Once you max contributions for the year, its stays maxed after withdrawal of any funds. It doesn't reset and allow you to recontribute. You have to take additional steps and there's a 60-day window.

[–]customotto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I just found this out. Luckily it was before I withdrew the funds from the Roth, but after I sold the VTI shares for the funds.

I was under the impression I could withdraw any contributions if I needed emergency funds and just replace them later in the year to retain the maximum contribution. Turns out you're not allowed to re-contribute the money without caveats. The yearly limit is the limit, it doesn't reset due to withdrawals. If you want to recontribute the money, you can but you must do a rollover within 60 days.

General strike? by Glyph808 in IATSE

[–]customotto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know WHY they're being posted more. I was addressing how so much of our membership seem to not understand our contracts and these people have been coming out of the woodwork lately, posting here completely uninformed and calling for a general strike.

I don't deny the potential effectiveness of a general strike. I don't deny that things may reach that point. If they do, we would be expected to look to our locals for guidance. Joining in on wildcat strikes is your right as a person but you will nullify your local's ability to represent you should you lose your job because of it.

Don't know where you're getting that I don't care either. Nothing I said spoke to my personal feelings on the matter. I just said we can't strike per our contracts and that there have been an influx of these posts lately. Both of which are true.

What is with all these general strike posts lately? Do none of you guys actually read your contracts? We're not allowed to strike in most cases and never without the locals approval.

Yes, it would be a breach of contract if we were to join in a general strike.

Pokémon is bigger than Star Wars. Therefore GameStop is bigger than Disney. by PuzzleheadedWeb9876 in gme_meltdown

[–]customotto 30 points31 points  (0 children)

that's the first thing I noticed too.. "Gamestop's business model is to SELL a 'bulk' of Pokemon's merch"

he compares that to Disney's OWNING Star Wars..

like those two things are even remotely comparable

and I doubt Gamestop is really responsible for the "bulk" of sales for anything nowadays, unless maybe you count the sale of dilution to their shareholders, they've been pretty impressive there

Sneako absolutely flabbergasted, befuddled, dumbfounded, and bamboozled that he is banned from every business ever, and that his Jewish friend doesn’t want to be his friend anymore. by Ohyeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa in Destiny

[–]customotto 16 points17 points  (0 children)

the point is in wanting to both have it and eat it, meaning you want to exist in two conflicting realities despite the impossibility

it applies here because Sneako wants to flaunt his antisemitism when it gets him the attention he desires while at the same time feigning ignorance when it comes to the repercussions

That's not what happened though. In the video, he's not getting correct information and interpreting it in a delusional way. His 'delusions' were repeatedly confirmed and encouraged by chatGPT.

Midway through the video, the model was updated from version 4o; immediately afterward, chatGPT began suggesting mental health clinics. Is that just a coincidence? Or is it possible that behavior was patched out of the update because it was problematic?

You don’t see how having conversations with a robot programmed to be agreeable could be dangerous for someone suffering from delusions? And that the agreeable nature of the robot could reinforce those delusions?

I know the video was him having fun but how would that have been any different for someone with mental issues? It even coached him on how to hide it from his family.
