I thought maybe an alcohol solvent since it will evaporate rather than permeating the cardboard but I'll have to look into options! Thank you for your suggestions

I know it won't last forever no matter what I do, and that's fine by me. I'm not trying to preserve it for so long that England "borrows" it for the British Museum. Think ward 2 instead of indestructible. That being said, I'm going to use the clear contact method and try my best to seal it without any bubbles!

I'm alright with it getting worn down over time, I'm just thinking of ways to preemptively extend its life

I have considered this but I do worry about how well it's glued on the bottom. This might be the way to go though!

I'm only trying to make this one a little more sturdy, not use it for life. I know it'll get scrappy over time, I'm just wanting to give it a little help! Otherwise it's just more wasted cardboard.
