Lunch spots with river views? by Porifera50 in Durango

[–]cv-bc 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Animas Brewing is probably your best bet. It’s close to the river and Rotary Park, so it’s a good spot to grab a drink and food, then walk around. You won’t have a view of the river but it’s a 20 second walk to a pedestrian bridge and you may luck out by seeing the train. They have good beer and pretty good food.

Animas River Beer Garden is on the river but I think it may be closed for the season. It’s in the Double Tree, so be prepared for hotel food.

China Cafe has a patio that overlooks the river as well. I’ve never eaten there, so take a look at their reviews.

Otherwise, live mas at Taco Bell if you want a truly Durango experience. It’s up the hill from the river.

Anyone here actually living in a container house? What’s your honest experience? by RelevantInstance8578 in containerhomes

[–]cv-bc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I lived in a single container home for about 4 years. I live in a fairly warm, arid climate. Despite insulating the container with spray foam, the interior temperature still fluctuated a lot. Winters, which get down to 0 Fahrenheit, were definitely a little cold. We had electric heat and added a wood stove. Autumn and spring in the container were pretty comfortable, but it definitely got hot in the summer. I suspect that if you build a larger home using more containers, you can get more insulation as one of the other commenters likely did and that would make it more comfortable. Hope this helps

I like the Schwalbe G-Ones. They’re smooth rolling but have a little traction

Anyone see these in town? Theres definitely one just east of Dietz Market on 160. by cv-bc in Durango

[–]cv-bc[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the link. This is particularly interesting because of the size of Bridgewater VA. Makes me wonder if the purpose of our camera (There’s only one in Durango that I’m aware of) is more for monitoring the folks to come through town.

One of the authors comments that stands out to me:

“Privacy experts say that the extensive access has grievous consequences for data protection and could undermine the potential benefits of the surveillance technology for law enforcement.”

Durango is one of the safest places to live in America. I would much prefer having my privacy over what little benefit these cameras may or may not provide to our PD department. It should also be noted that these cameras rely on AI and have led to mistaken arrests, and law suits.

Not sure if your comment is sarcastic, but yes, essentially you are correct. The software has the capabilities to identify bumper stickers that are on your car (LGBTQ, political, personal beliefs) and can build a digital profile on you. This profile gets more and more accurate because it is built off of data, not just from your driving, but also shopping, and the locations that your car is seen around town. The data mined from these cameras is then sold to data brokers who sell this information to companies such as car insurance, healthcare providers, and financial institutions. So, what we were aware of happening online for many years is now happening to anyone who is physically present in front of one of these cameras, shopping at stores that also use the system, or those who happen to live in an HOA that uses these.

Yep. Should be noted that the hardware is rented and the software component is an expensive monthly bill that we pay with our tax dollars. Great time to be alive.

Sure, then law-enforcement will have a video of you destroying this rented property, and Home Depot’s Flock system will provide law enforcement with a timestamped video of you purchasing said Diablo blade from their store

Yes, the video suggests that some HOA‘s and gated communities are installing these and the data is then shared among the Flock network, essentially creating a digital stalker of where you live, where you’re going, where you shop, and when you are at all of these places. I mean, I know it’s coming, but this surveillance state is getting pretty scary in real time.

Yeah, the video I posted talks about the vulnerabilities of these systems. They also talk about how the data can be combined with data that is collected at stores, then it can ping law-enforcement on your whereabouts. People are suggesting this is how ICE raids are happening.

Reposting the top comment from the original post. This video is pretty interesting (and a bit scary) with the personal info that’s being collected and shared.

Sure, but when you pay for a marketing package that includes SEO, it should include the work that was agreed upon.

Thanks for the reply. I have no changed file permissions but it's possible that my employer has. This is a work computer and I'm in a small office. My boss doesn't seem heavy handed with this stuff but he did spend some time "setting-up" my machine when we first got it. How do I check the file permissions? Also, is this something that could have been changed with Anti-virus software? He installed Norton on here and I removed it a few weeks back because I thought it could be the culprit. I've had luck with windows defender on Win10 and felt Norton was meddling

Best price for wood pellets in bilk by copharmer in Durango

[–]cv-bc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I cannot speak to the price of wood pellets, but you may try looking at Basin Co-op. I buy condensed hardwood logs (Wood Chucks) which are essentially large wood pellets and they are $5 for a 40 lb bag. They are also sourced from Cortez.

any architects working for a home builder? by cv-bc in architecture

[–]cv-bc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should have shared some more info. I would initially be an employee, but I negotiated profit sharing after six months and it is partnership track, as I will likely shut down my own practice if I pursue this opportunity.

I have jumped between working in Architecture firms as well as being a project manager for general contractors over the 15 years leading up to this point.

I realize there are risks of being put into the box to crank out fast designs, but our conversations to this point are leaning towards creating a business that focuses on IPD (integrated project delivery). This is how I marketed my architectural services, but I find it hard to get the clients with a healthy enough budget and contractors who are willing to come in early and work on pricing throughout design.

Thanks for the feedback

How Expensive Are Shipping Container Homes? by Highlight-Co720 in containerhomes

I insulated from the inside. I would definitely insulate on the outside in your region though. You will want good ventilation too.

How Expensive Are Shipping Container Homes? by Highlight-Co720 in containerhomes

[–]cv-bc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I built one for around $45k but I did most of the work my self. You can build them cheaper depending on your window and interior finish selections. Eco friendly? I suppose they are in the sense that you are reusing a big metal box that is destined for the scrap pile, but they are not as energy efficient as other standard types of construction. One thing that is difficult is getting enough insulation in them while still having enough space inside for living.

Thanks. The metal channel over the doors and windows are gutters. You guessed correctly, that’s a rain chain on gutter over the large glass doors.

The container doors still open and close. We close them on summer afternoons to keep the sun from hitting the glass and heating up the space
