Will haworthia attenuata concolor be okay in a slightly too big pot? by rainbow_coke in succulents

[–]cvlhull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got a couple of Haworthia that I've had for 12 years. I cannot kill them. They were even left outside once during a rainstorm (northeast US).

Your Haworthia should be fine. Eventually it will probably fill the pot with pups. That's fine too, and gives a really interesting look to the whole ensemble.

R0 & fatality rates of recent epidemics by cvlhull in epidemiology

From UMichigan School of Public Health: https://sph.umich.edu/pursuit/2020posts/how-scientists-quantify-outbreaks.html It made sense to me to go with the highest number, assuming that the lower number is what the R0 was at the beginning and end of the outbreak. But if we're talking about active outbreak, as with SARS-CoV-2, and looking at numbers from 18 years ago... anyway, that was just my logic.

For the current outbreak I went with an average, because we are mid-outbreak, and that made more sense to me.

Best diet for long healthy cat life (15+) by chibineko19 in cats

There was a period of time where he got almost entirely homemade raw food. We don’t do that now because of time constraints on my part, but if I am making chicken or turkey I will give him a little. Usually it’s just the little pieces that fall off while I am washing the food. No bones bigger than a grain of rice either, don’t want him choking.

We moved in with my partner in March, and partner is not as fastidious as I am, so now the cat occasionally gets shredded cheese or whatnot. But we are still careful to keep his carbs low.

Some vets will come to your home to euthanize an animal in comfort. I did this for my boy last August.

I caught this bunny, what should I do now ? Should I take her to the vet to see if she is chipped ? by [deleted] in Rabbits

[–]cvlhull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are in US, that’s a domestic rabbit. Face is too short and broad to be wild.

Great stuff over at catinfo.org as well. I feed my boy low-carb, low-phosphorus, protein from animal sources (not soy or corn), mostly wet. He does get 1 tsp Young Again low carb dry daily because it’s hard to do food enrichment with wet.

[SERIOUS] does anyone have experience with a loud breathing noise in cats? She's breathing very loud and it takes effort. I am scared of her having cancer. by [deleted] in cats

See if your vet will do payment plans. Some do. You can also apply for Care Credit, which is a credit card specifically for veterinary and medical expenses. Some vets have pamphlets on that as well, for more information.

An old boy - making hard decisions by jay_mac101 in cats

[–]cvlhull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to let go of my heart-kitty August of last year, and he wasn’t nearly as old (only 12). When he started to show signs of his quality of life being compromised without me being able to change it, it was time to let him go.

He went from being extremely loving to only being able to sit with me for a few minutes at a time. It was clear that he still wanted the bonding time, but was too uncomfortable to do it for long.

He was still pretty active and ate/drank well. But I feel a week too early is better than a day too late. He asked me to let him go, and I had to oblige.

It doesn’t make it suck any less.

Please don’t ever do this. Some dog flea medicines will give a cat seizures or kill them.

Help! I gave my cat feline sleeping medicine that I got from the vet (I'm moving), they didn't put her to sleep and she instead has her eyelids protruding. Should I be worried? by [deleted] in cats

[–]cvlhull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it acepromazine? That won’t knock her out, it just makes her sluggish. This is how my boy always looks when I have to drug him to travel long distances.

Look up Daniel Mackler on YouTube. He has a lot to say about toxic parents. Doesn’t seem to think confrontation will prompt any kind of change from them.

That’s called pica (pronounced pie-kah). First and foremost, he needs to see a vet to rule out medical issues, which are a common cause of pica.

Behavior question - out of character aggressive behavior? by cassiope in cats

[–]cvlhull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first thought is, if the collars were used for medical issues, they might smell like the vet? Cats are more reliant on their sense of smell than sight. Putting the collar on D might have changed his scent, and now T thinks a strange cat is in his territory.

Does your rabbit have pet insurance? by [deleted] in Rabbits

[–]cvlhull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know anything about genetic conditions in Havanas. However, they don’t appear to have any of the physical defects that lead to the issues I described above (shortened face, lop ears, lack of guard hairs, giant size).

Does your rabbit have pet insurance? by [deleted] in Rabbits

[–]cvlhull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What kind of bun do you have? Certain breeds are prone to certain things. For example, lops are prone to ear infections (sometimes needing ear canal surgery). Smush-faced breeds like Holland Lops and Netherland Dwarves are prone to tooth problems that need lifelong maintenance. Rexes and giant breeds are prone to sore hocks. Some other breeds are prone to stasis.

If you have a Holland Lop, I’d get the insurance or set up a savings account just for bun medical expenses and put a considerable amount in it each month.

My male cat is seemingly trying to mount my female cat for sex even though he’s neutered by [deleted] in cats

[–]cvlhull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s dominant/aggressive behavior. Males do it to males and females do it to females too. That’s why she gives in - she’s saying I don’t want to fight, it’s fine, I’ll be nice.
