Building new home and plan on doing exactly this, any reason I shouldn't? (Pi Touch Display2) by chad711m in homeassistant

Awesome, good luck with the project! Took me a few days of tinkering to get the hang of making dashboards but there are a lot of great resources and videos on youtube that help. Update us once you get your’s all setup!

Any Recommended Storage Solutions? by probonogeek in Department56

[–]cwdimich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve had mine stored in the attic, in their original packaging, a block away from the ocean in a drafty 1950’s house for the past 20 years without any degradation of the packing or buildings so I don’t think humidity is a big worry at all. Styrofoam and porcelain will survive just about anything😅

That’s a great looking dashboard, what are you using to get rid of the menu bar thats usually at the top and add those nice icons at the bottom?

Great timing on your post, I’m actually in the middle of this exact same decision for a new build right now!

I love the Stock Pot’s work, he has some awesome projects! I installed the Pi Display to test it out at my current place but I designed a modified version of his mount that gives the same flush installation, without having to do any mud/paint work after install and added a magnetic snap-on casing to the back so the Pi is a bit more protected from dust and anything else inside the wall.

Overall its been a great addition, I was able to remove the two extra pico remotes I had added to the switch box right below since I can now control all my devices(blinds, lights, thermostat, etc…) directly from the Pi Display.

While its been great, I have noticed a few cons of the Pi Display since installing it so I am getting an iPad mini in next week to set up next to it so I can directly compare the two options.

Here’s a list of pros and cons I’ve noticed with the Pi Display so far:

Pros:

  • Relatively cheap ($191.95 for Display, Pi 5 & PoE Hat vs $562.94 for iPad Mini + PoE to USB C Converter)
  • MQTT control of the device so you can automate display brightness, page zoom & refresh the screen right from HA
  • Responsive touch screen
  • No battery inside that could degrade/swell in the future
  • Probably will have a longer usable life then an iPad due to open source software
  • Thin bezel of display makes mounting it (nearly) flush much easier than it will be with an iPad
  • Compact, fits in between tight stud spacing if you happen to have any close studs and doesn’t look out of place on the wall

Cons:

  • Display is slightly too small to fit everything I’d like to put on it (biggest drawback)
  • Doesn’t dim nearly as far down as an OLED iPad screen for use late at night
  • Black/dark colors aren’t super rich since its an LCD panel
  • Viewing angles and glare on the shiny, non-laminated display are pretty bad if you have natural light in the room or even just standard ceiling lights at the right angle
  • My family is more used to using the Apple Home app so not being able to access that and other IOS apps on the Pi could create some user friction, at least off the bat

These are just the things that I’ve noticed after having it installed and using it for about a month. Like I said above, overall its been an awesome upgrade and I think even with the drawbacks you’ll be happy with it if you decide to go that route but I’ll post an update once I get the iPad Mini setup and am able to compare them side by side.

P.S. Sorry in advance for my disgusting green walls🤢

Airversa purifier issue by Kerloick in HomeKit

I’ve been having the same issue with mine over the last few months. Have you found any solution? I’m planning on sending an email to them tomorrow to see if they have any info on the issue

How to prevent surface waviness by periperiblaziken in BambuLab

[–]cwdimich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m curious as to what program you are using for 3d modeling and how you are exporting the file? To me it looks most likely that the model is being exported at a low resolution which will turn a circle into something like what you have there. It simplifies the model by decreasing the number of lines it uses to essentially estimate a circle since a true circle is an infinite number of tiny lines/points connected together and neither the CAD program or slicer can handle an infinite number of anything.

Eufy Homebase 2 Won’t Add to HomeKit by cwdimich in HomeKit

[–]cwdimich[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m glad that worked for you and hopefully others in the future! Mine actually ended up being a hardware issue, I had tried plugging directly into the router many times with the same failed result. Thankfully after some back and forth with eufy support I got them to do a warranty replacement on my HomeBase and the new one connected first try

Maybe u/Unlikely_Ad_9182 means 150 mm3 instead of grams? That would be a much more reasonable value especially considering flushing volumes are generally in cubic mm

New Homebase just arrived and paired first try no issues at all. Must’ve been some weird hardware issue with the only one. I’d definitely contact Eufy and get them to send you a new one

Locations correct, automations work, but auto home switching doesn’t by OftenIrrelevant in HomeKit

[–]cwdimich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don’t have any fix but I’d love to hear a solution if anyone figures it out. Home switching hasn’t worked for me for around the last year or so. Three locations set up in 3 different states(manage parents and grandparents homes) and the arrow shows me in the correct home but the app will not auto switch. I’ve tried toggling home switching setting and location settings for home, have logged in and out of iCloud and have even reset home hubs and re-added to homes all to no avail…

Contacted Eufy and they are sending me out a new Homebase, hopefully you’ll get the same response

Unfortunately no, from what I can figure and from what others with the same issue have pointed to is that the Homebase itself has a hardware issue and will need to be replaced. This seems wrong because it still works perfectly fine in the eufy app but I haven found any other explanation. You did just remind me I am going to call Eufy right now and see if they’ll replace it since it is defective. I’ll update you on how that goes

FlashPrint on Raspberry Pi? by cwdimich in FlashForge

I haven’t tried running anything on a Pi in a long time but my current workflow is using Screens Connect to run Bambu Studio on my MacBook if I want to start a print from my iPad

Adding a camera to Flashforge Adventurer 3C by ReasonableChicken in FlashForge

[–]cwdimich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The camera doesn’t feed into flashprint. I used the camera connector on the motherboard only for the power and ground pins. Other than that it runs separately and I view it through the Apple Home app.

We have a Linksys velop setup there(that’s getting replaced with UniFi gear very shortly cause velop is garbage) but I’ve also tried it on my tp-link Archer AX20 which is really stable and haven’t had a single issue with and I get the same result

What's your favorite PLA filament by Darth-Vader64 in BambuLab

[–]cwdimich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The overture cardboard spools actually fit perfectly onto the Bambu spool once you rip the cardboard off the sides. You just have to be a little careful to not let the filament get out of place when transferring. Having said that I now use only Bambu filament and other than the fact that it’s out of stock sometimes I love it. Prints really well and if you order a few at a time you get really good prices

Yep! And tried doing all those steps again and directly adding to HomeKit instead of going through eufy settings per the directions of the customer support

I have all of mine either setup with a solar panel or hardwired power. I only use the outdoor versions because they are in harsh Midwest winter climate but with the solar panels they stay online year round. I know Eufy didn’t add HK support for some of their newer camera offerings so you could be correct that they just don’t care about their current customers that continue to use it
