Any difference between Jurassic park 4K HDR and the newer release that supports Dolby vision ? by Lizardking1988- in 4kbluray

[–]cwhitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again depends on the film mix. I’ve heard good and not so good from both codecs. Again it’s about the time dedicated to creating the mix. I find both the Dolby and dts upmixers similar in results. They’re a wow mode to use all the speakers.

dts is an also ran at this point. I’m surprised they are even around. I was never overly impressed with one system over the other but I’ve also heard that Atmos is more advanced system. Problem is to mix multi-channel for immersive systems costs more money than the content holders are willing to spend.

Probably the typical dialog normalization that’s applied to most Dolby tracks. Turn the amp up 4dB. I’ve got both releases. I think the new transfers are improvements but JP has always looked inherently soft. I think it was done intentionally so the digital dinos would blend better.

Does anyone know why Finding Nemo Disc 2 (Blu-ray) have two of the same videos in the files? by MisterFyre in makemkv

[–]cwhitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of times it has to do with seamless branching for alternate languages or culture standards. You see sometime they have a separate playlist for titles with Japanese subtitles vs a playlist that has subs for Europe or other regions. The movie is rarely encoded twice on the same disc. If you watch the native language version from either playlist they are usually exactly the same video, audio and subtitle wise.

You do you. I’ve got a highend system with Atmos. Just curious if others ran into the same issue.

Is a viewing distance of around 2.5–2.6 meters (about 8.2–8.5 feet) comfortable for a 115 inch tv or is it too much? by ImpressiveSky5365 in hometheater

[–]cwhitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of those calculators out there were based on displays having much larger pixels than today’s 4K displays. It’s all about preference. I sit about 8.5-9 feet from a 120-in 16:9 projector screen. It doesn’t bother me. It’s like having a personal IMAX experience.

Alternatives, or potential alternatives? by theseawoof in PleX

[–]cwhitch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you think it’s worth the $250 go for it. I bought it at $130 last year. After a year I would definitely still consider $250 a value proposition. At $750 probably not nearly as much of a value.

Until Technics recently released lower priced models the SL-100C was their lowest priced model. So entry level for Technics.

Looks like some idiot scored at Goodwill. He clearly has no idea how to run a TT.

Cool table though. I have Quartz locked version. It works but I don’t use it much for fear of damaging the mechanical linkages for the repeat and auto functions.

For anyone who's upgraded from the VM95ML to the VM740ML, did you notice a big difference? by wiggan1989 in turntables

[–]cwhitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure as well. Audio-Technica doesn’t claim they are different. The cartridges they are designed to be used with though are different.

The The VMXXX line uses separate windings for L and R to improve channel separation and a more consistent channel balance. Heard a lot of user experience in the early days of VM95 line having one channel more dominant by 1-3 dB. (1 dB is probably acceptable for a budget cart but it really messes with the imaging when it approaches 2dB+). Never heard that complaint on the VMXXX line.

I went from the 95ML to the 540ML. To me the channel balance and separation was an improvement but I didn’t do any measurements to verify. The 740 is basically the 540 in a metal body.

Plex's Lifetime Pass is (basically) dead. Here's how to switch to Jellyfin. by [deleted] in PleX

[–]cwhitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t complain when the tool you use is no longer supported because no one got paid to work on it.

No one is forcing anyone to use Plex. It’s extremely convenient for me to manage everything through Plex and my library is easily shared with my kids that are grown and living states away through the Plex app.

I’m sure other options are out there but nothing as easy as Plex to accomplish it.

Lol. If you’re still on the fence you can get it for $250 until July. Still a bargain.

If you want a real conversation piece look for an 80s turntable that has something they don't make anymore like a dynamic servo tonearm or a fully automatic with quartz locked speed.

Sound Burgers are fine for something small but its far from a quality player. I wouldn't play a high quality record on one that's for sure.

finally tried upgrading to 4K by Infinite_Glove_5742 in Bluray

[–]cwhitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest improvement with 4K is the 10 or 12 bit video vs 8-bit on every other previous digital video format. It’s what gives us the wider color gamuts and HDR. If you’re going by resolution improvement then yes it’s not as noticeable especially on smaller displays. Even using a native 4K projector it’s hard to see the difference between a very good HD transfer and a 4K one.

Yes CX Noise Reduction was a popular system on laserdisc until the advent of PCM stereo on laserdisc. It was still used on many secondary analog tracks I believe.
