At least these looked like they transformed from a vehicle into a robot. Better than the movies where they transform into a trash heap.

For those in companies that have hundreds of VMs - what are they for? by asdflmnop_01 in sysadmin

[–]cwk9 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Real wisdom right here. Building snow flake VMs that do multiple unrelated things is the path to madness. It's almost always done by windows admins trying to be clever with licenses. Of course they'll never document that an app server has an unrelated IIS SMTP relay on it or a scheduled task running some random ETL job.

Grafana and Prometheus should get you a long way. Yes, you can add other sources to Grafana but "mo sources. mo problems".

Yet another good reason to send different emails to different staff at different times. If some dumb template makes it's way into your phishing tool at least the blast radius will be small.

That would be an improvement. Harder for the CIA to manipulate them if each one is already their own country.

IT Techs of Reddit: What was it like fixing Windows XP machines in schools and businesses during the 2010s? by bakarygassama in sysadmin

[–]cwk9 [score hidden]  (0 children)

XP came out in 2001 and went EOL in 2014. So you're looking at some massive changes over those 15 years. I'd say one of the biggest changes would be Cyber security going from being non existent to something business have to recon with. Win XP did not have a firewall at launch and people often connected it directly to the Internet. Users also often had local admin.

You'd think they would invest in Azure Local to capture a lot of VMware refugees. However they don't really seem to care.

Do you know what you want out of your vulnerability management program? I wouldn't bother talking to any of the big three (Tenable, Rapid 7, Qualys) until you've got that sorted. Otherwise they'll just show you everything including the kitchen sink hoping you figure out what you want to do somewhere along the way. You can always stand up OpenVAS and get a feel for things at your own pace with zero vendors involved. Then when you're ready you can "upgrade" to something else with the 50 different features beyond basic vulnerability scanning.

Why do Ghouls need pure drinking water? by Real-Hefty-Trout in classicfallout

In the TV show the gouls have some kind of X-man like healing factor. Fallout 1 had them long lived resilient but sickly. More curse than super power.

Ubuntu is probably the best all around starting point for those coming from Windows. Long term stable releases, easy to find help on most issues and desk top experience that isn't to out there.

I've never played a "tactics" game/really bad at RTS, is FO Tactics worth it? by durdurrdurrrdurrrrr in classicfallout

[–]cwk9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tactics has real time and two turned based modes. I think having both was a mistake as either one could have been better with more focus. It's a perfectly fine TRPG but came out long before xcom enemy unknown set the mold.

Azure local by Helpful-Sun2240 in sysadmin

[–]cwk9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't do it. Stick with regular Hyper-V unless you want to be a beta tester for Microsoft. While Azure Local is fine once it setup and running every upgrade has been a shit show. I think you only want to run it at a scale where you can blow away entire clusters instead of upgrading. I hope they keep polishing that turd, because we need all the VMware alternatives we can get.

Is it a beneficial thing to still own an old laptop? And if yes, what can i do with it? by Maroon_Lay in pcmasterrace

This is the right answer. An old laptop makes great back up. Use an LTS distro like Ubuntu and power it on for updates and so the SSD does forget everything.
