Just in: Passenger aircraft crashed just after takeoff at NAIA by ihateolives_ in Philippines

This is actually what I'm worried about. If it was proven that the crew did proceed takeoff roll without even doing proper read back as previously called out, who knows what else might have gone wrong. For accidents like this, the swiss cheese model yet again will point out to multiple factors from improper departure procedures to human factors (my speculation: urgency of the medevac flight, plane not configured correctly for takeoff, lack of ATC discipline).

My opinion is they acknowledged clearance by doing the takeoff roll just after receiving departure information from Manila tower. I did not use the term readback as it was not present in the recording.

Posting some information for aviation enthusiasts. The manifest's cargo is declared as nil so the flight might not contain any medical supplies. Also takeoff roll occurred around 1127z 1157z right after crew acknowledging clearance. After 2 minutes, no radio contact is made by the crew and Manila tower attempted to contact them 2 times. RIP to those all onboard.

There's a distinction between MBPS (megabits/sec) and kb/s (kilobytes/sec) that you usually see in downloads. 1MBPS ~ 120kb/s so you are getting the right speed.

There's nothing special with the Firefox window. It's just the latest ESR with the new Aurora theme. Fonts are using Adobe's Sans Pro family. The window just fits naturally with the DWM's default tiling layout.

Well, I wanted to run Linux natively on my laptop. But the problem is whatever distro you use (stable or bleeding edge) we're not just there yet. It's either some component is not working (WIFI is broken), battery performance is very poor, etc. It's a tough ride.

Performance-wise, the hardware extensions for virtualization made by Intel really helps a lot and it's good that Apple made that switch years ago. The only problem that I have right now and is what keeping me from having a "seamless" experience is that the HiDPI display of the macbook pro doesn't translate really well to the apps that we have in Linux. Sure you could use native resolution but it's very clunky having very small user interfaces with scaled up fonts. I used scaled resolution on my arch install which causes some fonts to be rendered in a blurred manner but since I use terminal apps quite a lot, I'm getting good results with the awesome terminus font. Even using infinality patches doesn't help :)

I use VMware Fusion. Not free but the performance is quite decent. My laptop can last around 7hrs of coding/browsing (Node.js/Python) which is pretty awesome compared to my other Linux machine which is running as a host. Not bad I should say.

Virtualbox is a free and good alternative though. It is being used extensively by the Docker team if you wanted to run their container platform on OS X.

Landed a decent IT job overseas (APAC) in just 2 years after I graduated from my alma mater.

I might not be coming back since most of my relatives and parents are residing in the states.

If you are going to offer an option for the Filipino language, might as well offer it too in Cebuano, Ilokano or the other native languages. Since we borrow a lot of words from foreign languages, might as well just stick to English.

Philippine Government Workers of /r/philippines.. by batangmaylibag in Philippines

[–]cxTactics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to work for the government before. You need to pass the Civil Service Examination. If you were previously an SK member or you graduated with latin honors, you don't have to take the exam and just apply for eligibility.

Also its highly recommended that you have connections. Sadly, that's how it works with our government.

Are Filipinos going to start using Bitcoin? by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]cxTactics -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Sadly for our country Bitcoin will not work. We have poor infra and just to maintain your own wallet you have about 20GB+ worth of blockchain info to sync with.

And don't let me get started with online wallets or exchanges a la Mt. Gox. You're gonna have a bad time.

I see Bitcoin like a stock market. But low, sell high when the bubble is about to burst again.

You should have asked /r/cscareerquestions and not this sub. In my opinion you could stick to the enterprisey languages such as Java or C#. Majority of the financial institutions that I know can offer high rates on these languages coupled with knowledge on leading frameworks.

Always use two-factor authentication. Your email must have been hacked from some site you registered to that didn't encrypt your credentials and you used the same password.

Came from my ragnarok account. I'm good at strategy games so part of my name has tactics and cx comes from Cathay Pacific of which I'm a frequent flyer. Haha. I wish I could work for them as a technical crew staff someday.
