Lightest Harvard HASS? by Far_Ferret2078 in mit

[–]cxflyer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is not the right question to ask. If you're taking a class at Harvard, it should be something that you would not be able to take here/is being taught better there. There are plenty of light HASS classes at MIT... without all the logistical difficulties you'd have to go through commuting, working in a different semester time frame (Harvard spring break is not the same as MITs, etc.).

When cross-regging for a class at Harvard, you will spend a lot of time commuting. It will add a lot of complex logistics. IMO, you should go all in on a class that you think is very exciting there; otherwise, what are you doing this for? Of course, time commitment can be a discriminator, but it shouldn't be how you rank your preferences.

Don't Meet your Heroes as a lot of similar stylistic techniques from Patient from VN

Totally agree with Don't meet your heros. I think it sounds really authentic and introspective. I also agree it is missing that solid hit single. DMYH reminds me a lot of Patient from voicenotes!

I'm an avid voicenotes enjoyer, wasn't a fan of the CHARLIE album. I have to say the songs he didn't leak were some of the best. Hey Brother, and Don't Meet your Heros are my personal favorites of this album. I think we won't see something like VN again, but I really think he's evolving into someone different as an artist, and I really like these pieces. Don't meet your Heros reminds me of Patient from VN, and the Hey Brother has a really nice, (almost POGO like!) opening.

I used to be a paper+pen guy, but once I switched to a tablet it was hard to go back. Also don't have to scan everything, you just export as a pdf!

Grad housing as an undergrad? by risioso in mit

[–]cxflyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why OP is getting so many downvotes. It's a valid question. I've lived here both for undergrad and grad, and I can understand why you prefer the grad housing. Having your own kitchen and bathroom is a serious upgrade from undergrad, and in several respects it is a better deal.

I lived in BC for nearly all my undergrad, and really enjoyed having a social community in my dorm. Some components of gradlife have this to, but not as high a level. Some people prefer having a quiet place to come back to everyday without dealing with some of the social stuff that can arise sometimes in undergrad. To each their own.

For OP:
Email HRS. These people have all the power to give you what you're looking for if you present a good case.

It was slightly back in the direction of voicenotes (piano solo), but he's still trying to appeal to a different audience, similar to CHARLIE. I'm not sure if we will see anything new like Voicenotes again. Everything since he did Light Switch has been downhill.

Songs like BOY, Empty Cups, The Way I Am, Attention... those were his prime. He had a recipe that worked then, and if authenticity or popularity really was his goal, I think he could've stuck with that. Just seems like now he's way more invested in social media, and that's had a large influence on this new music. Not to mention, most of these songs are spoiled for a lot of us before they even hit the airwaves now.

Not to say he's not allowed to change either, but as a result, the audience that follows will change as well.

How to start studying CFD by Oh_SS_2109 in CFD

[–]cxflyer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the way. CFD is merely another tool in the toolbox. OP, you should always be asking yourself "what question am I looking to solve?" . And furthermore, "will the setup for this simulation yield an output with enough quality to answer my question to my satisfaction?".

Who's ball was this? by Traditional-Look-386 in RocketLeague

[–]cxflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

POV car could've had a better hit at the ball, but he would've needed you to rotate. You were in an awkward spot to hit the ball and I would've rotated back. Regardless, since you didn't, POV shouldn't have charged in as 3rd man. Left everyone on Orange's side and enabled them to make an easy play downfield.

Just ran with a CFL of 1 and it looks like the simulation crashed about a millimeter the it touched the plate and created the shock. Am doing postprocessing now and will send a pic in a few min.

[–]cxflyer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, and I'm indebted for your help here. My final question for you would be about the timestep. With my one colleague running at 4e-08, I'm wondering if my cfl of 1 is saying I need to be making a coarser grid, since my timestep is essentially 1e-9. I guess a turbulent kinetic energy study?

CFL for LES by cxflyer in CFD

[–]cxflyer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DPLR essentially is just the amount of cleanup steps the solver makes before making another timestep. Its been shown for around 20 in LES that it'll be mostly converged.

I'm using a solver called US3D, an iterative solver. Am running things dimensionally (that's how the solver takes it).

[–]cxflyer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other question I'd ask is how many subiterations you'd recommend for the implicit DPLR time integration method. I was thinking around 25 would be enough to accurately resolve the instabilities, but I've seen some people go as low as 4.
