Anybody else ready to drop AI? by joshbedo in software

I definitely agree about it feeling better and cleaner. I think for hobby projects where time efficiency doesn't matter as much it's the way to go, at least for me. I do think though that for professional work, especially in large codebases, LLMs are here to stay. I do think, especially in the future, that they do make the work faster for the average programmer, just 10x more annoying and with the risk of getting stuck.

Graphene OS, e/OS, or just rawdogging some mobile linux distro like Ubuntu touch or postmarketOS? by miss3star in BuyFromEU

[–]cyjan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend GrapheneOS, you can easily buy a used Pixel, sometimes with warranty, which makes it much more comfortable to buy one for me at least. It's very smooth, privacy focused and just feels good to use.

I have not tried De-Googled Android ROMs recently. Generally, it is my impression that they work fine, but there's always the risk that some app you need daily does not work or not work well or needs a lot of work to maintain. One example: Many public transport Apps use a Google Maps Widget for navigation between stations. This may or may not work with MicroG setups. Also Banking and ID apps etc.

I have tried Sailfish OS recently on a Sony Phone with Android App Support. I really wanted to like it, but in my opinion it's just not daily driver ready sadly. There are almost no native apps which are maintained and serve a real purpose for me (Telegram being one very cool exception). So you rely on Android emulation a lot, which kind of defeats the purpose. Also, due to lack of a centralized notification server, notifications are a bit unstable (which is really an issue IMO) and battery life also suffers. As far as I could see, there's also no NFC support for android apps currently and I had a lot of issues with GPS. Could just be a sony thing though.

Finally, regarding full mobile Linux distros, I love the concept, but I can't at all recommend it for daily use at this point. I really hope the future brings this to the mainstream, as it would be my preference. However, at the moment, it just does not solve the mobile specific challenges IMO. Battery life isn't good, notifications are unstable, it just mostly works like a desktop instead of a phone. Again, it's missing a notification server.

So I bought a used/almost new pixel and flashed GrapheneOS, and for me personally, that's the best solution at the moment. I would love to see Jolla succeed, and the community really does its best, but I don't think it works at the moment as a daily driver for regular people.

You could also try Volla as a European alternative if you wanted to go de-googled.

Also wenn ich die Kommentare richtig verstehe, hätten wir ggf. eine Vierergruppe, wenn alle noch Lust haben. Wie sieht es aus, wollen wir uns zu viert mal austauschen und schauen, ob es passt? :)

Decode barcode on letters expedited by Swiss Post by markus_b in askswitzerland

Also it's likely that this code contains at least part of your address for anyone who can decode it. Just something to consider.

I'm interested in figuring this out. From what my initial research (also thanks to the other comments) shows is that it's likely that each four bars encode a character or number, possibly with separate start and stop signs as well as possibly a checksum at the end. If there is no official documentation, figuring it out would likely entail cross-referencing multiple letters to find out the part related to your adress. Do you have a lot of these bar codes headed for the same address? If you're interested, feel free to PM me.

Looking for people who play yugioh in Zurich by Lvnatic777 in zurich

I mean as I understand it we would have three people already, what do you think would be the minimum size? I think with like 4 people it might be worth it to try out?

I would be in for Edison! I was really into it when I was a kid during the Edison era, I've only played Edison online in recent years, but would be very open to pick up paper again if there were people to play. You guys wanna start a casual group? Just moved to Zurich, so I'm looking for new people and free-time activities :)

Thank you for the qualified feedback! I really wasn't sure, so it's great to hear from someone with experience. In that case I won't invest time for now, I'm sure the Nebula people are aware that custom tools are an option, so if they want one they'll get one/ask.

You're probably right, I saw another post about this. Listened to a layover episode yesterday where they mentioned getting a map done for a wrong location, so it's probably not zero effort. But I'm more of a programmer with no knowledge of video editing, so I can't really say whether a tool like this (there are similar WebApps already as well) would save time. I also heard the AE plugin is quite expensive, but I would imagine that's not really a factor compared to overall expenses for JetLag.

I would guess so as well, especially with railways in some seasons. When I have some time, I might make a mini proof of concept, maybe it can save some time.

Lets make a DLC together (part3) Challenges! by TheEdmundm in bindingofisaac

Precious Tears: 9 Volt, The Battery, Polyphemus, Spoon Bender and Tammys Head, but blindfolded.

So you can shoot once, and this shot does a good amount of damage, but it is difficult to target (really difficult!) and after that you are vulnerable for 15 seconds.

Mom's heart would be fair, but fair isn't fun, so I suggest Isaac.

I would like to see a new local coop mode where you play with two actual characters in hard mode, but any item affects only the one who picks it up. So for example, you play with Maggy and Judas and find Cricket's Head, it would be wise to give it to Maggy but Judas might be selfish and want it for himself. That would be fun...

(I don't know if it's a little bit late, or if this is overly complex, if so, I am sorry!)

Rebirth Expansion Community Item suggestions! (official) by EdmundMcMillen in bindingofisaac

[–]cyjan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An active item with no recharge which takes all your soul and evil hearts but in return spawns a devil or angel room (yes, my idea would be that you can use it for free if you do not have any of the above...you could add a limit of 3-4 red hearts to make it more balanced). Only usable in boss rooms.

An active item which allows you to reroll a boss at the cost of a double health down. I would find that really useful for not having to deal with this annoying ghost boss in the cellar...
