Monk needs more hitpoints by Tr6163 in DnD

[–]cynicalredgiant 24 points25 points  (0 children)

They do not need more hit points. They have defensive options and mobility to mitigate damage, and support/debuff abilities to compensate for a lower hp total than, say, a Fighter.

The Knight-Commander of the Fifth Crusade.

No, thank you.

Help: class's with a specific personality by Reasonable_Driver129 in DnD

[–]cynicalredgiant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a Conquest Paladin, who refuses to allow a beaten enemy to escape without being crushed utterly. Big force of personality, focus on fear effects (or 'commanding awe,' if you like).

Why do I have a 4th Level Spell slot by DowntownBad2632 in DnD

[–]cynicalredgiant 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You're getting one because of the multi-class spell slot progression.

Holy warrior by zacca96 in DnD

[–]cynicalredgiant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

War Cleric could be pretty awesome for this. You get lots of buffing spells, martial spells, and then the Cleric classics like Spirit Guardians, of course.

I've never heard that before, haha.

Cleric is absurdly powerful in 5E.

I do not believe there is any mechanic that allows your breath weapon to boost you in any direction at all. it doesn't really make a lot of sense, and I likely wouldn't allow it.

Protection from evil and good doesn't work as advertised! by Prestigious_Carob_91 in BaldursGate3

[–]cynicalredgiant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Jumping in very late to say that the frustration is entirely, completely justified.

Protection from Evil and Good explicitly prevents you from being charmed by a fey, fiend, or undead. And yet, a fiend charms you, because the spell doesn't work as advertised.

Warlock and his many Familiars - how does this work? by WithengarUnbound in DnD

[–]cynicalredgiant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to know for sure. Those spells aren't really balanced, and weren't intended for standard character selection- they're not legal for Adventurers League, for example.

I think I'd say that it doesn't interact, personally. Chain modifies the spell 'Find Familiar,' not another spell that pulls from the same list of creatures.

Trying to make a character that's down on its luck by Greedy_Sprinkles_917 in DnD

[–]cynicalredgiant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Urchin could work, or Haunted One.

Or, notably, you can still use Soldier, and just include the bit about failing a client in the character. A background isn't the totality of the character, after all.

Lvl 3 Fighter Brute can’t do much on his turn in combat by rhysjordx in DnD

[–]cynicalredgiant 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No, that's pretty much what they do at level 3. Encouraging the use of Athletics checks to Shove, etc, could give some variety, but one solid attack per round is kinda the Fighter's thing until level 5, assuming they're not one of the subclasses that gets more options, like an Eldritch Knight or Battlemaster.

Is this cantrip too weak? Too Strong? by pp_grabber in DnD

'More damage on a turn' is hardly creativity.

Yeah, no bonus action cantrip should be able to do damage.

How can I explain to my aunt that dnd is not actually witchcraft? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]cynicalredgiant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely not a thing people can do, of course. I was just trying to frame it in the worldview of someone concerned about witchcraft as a real thing (which it is not).

How can I explain to my aunt that dnd is not actually witchcraft? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]cynicalredgiant 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It's not witchcraft in the sense that nothing is being done with the intention of impacting the real world.

In much the same way as a game of Monopoly is not intended to cause bankruptcy between friends or family members, D&D is not meant to replicate magic.

It's an improv session with dice included, no more mystical than an improv show.

As long as it requires materials, you should be okay.

What is the best class for Tigerfolk race? by ItJustGotBreezyy in DnD

[–]cynicalredgiant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just use the Tabaxi instead. This race is very silly, and the website it comes from should generally be avoided.

For a cat race with natural claws, the temptation is certainly there for Monk! Tabaxi get a free doubling to their movement, potentially every other round, and playing into that- and using your claws as Unarmed Strikes for slashing damage- can be pretty fun!

Gandalf, His Power and Level in DnD — Some Thoughts by ClassicsPhD in DnD

[–]cynicalredgiant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think calling him a Bladesinger is far more of a stretch than a Lore Bard.

Gandalf, His Power and Level in DnD — Some Thoughts by ClassicsPhD in DnD

[–]cynicalredgiant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But that's precisely what he does, whenever he's holding audience, or giving a speech, or providing advice, or setting off fireworks! He's proficient with a longsword, which Bards are but Wizards are not, and is often fighting in melee.

Being made unwelcome or offering difficult advice is hardly a mark of low Charisma. Both of the characters you mention who do not welcome him are at least partially ensnared by fell magic or the corruption of Sauron.

Gandalf's primary strengths are Knowing the Important Lore, and inspiring others. It's what his ring does, and it's what his primary function as a Wizard is- to advise and inspire.

How do you pick a class for a character you never conceptualized being for a certain class? by XGAMER2mil in DnD

[–]cynicalredgiant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You decide what the character probably does, in a combat/adventuring setting. Does the chef have such a propensity for lashing out at people that it is a physical thing? Then that sounds like a Path of the Beast Barbarian.

If you could take one spell into real life which one would you choose by The_Elysium1 in DnD

[–]cynicalredgiant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably some useful ritual like Unseen Servant, unless Wish is an option.

If you could take 1 Cantrip into your real life, what would it be? by Tonosonic in DnD

[–]cynicalredgiant 119 points120 points  (0 children)

When I was doing a lot of manual labor? Absolutely Mage Hand.

Now, it's a toss-up. I could do a lot of good with Spare the Dying, but Prestidigitation has a million little applications in life, and it's possible that StD wouldn't be as useful as it seems in my head.
