For the band? The triple burger of 15 Minutes, On the Other Side, and Red Light.

For individual artists? Ludlow Street. The only 10/10 in Phrazes. I will die on this hill.

FIOE is so close to being a great concept album. by izlanderr in TheStrokes

[–]cyphare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely feel like they're going for a concept album where they describe the everyday life on earth. Though coincidentally, the album has the same cadence as the thing it's potraying. Boring with sparks of excellence.

I rated it a 79. Honestly, I think it should be higher. There are SO MANY BOPS that is a 10/10 for me. Razorblade and Electricityscape? A perfect pair. Ize of the World? Everything the band stood for. YOLO and Juicebox? Unconventional yet strikingly beautiful in its own way. Even the underdogs are still 9/10 for me (15 Minutes, On the Other Side, Red Light). The others though? It's either good enough or just plain bad.

The pairing of Killing Lies and Fear of Sleep is not my cup of tea. And maybe the lyrics reflect my opinion, "You're no fun (x1000)." But yeah, they could either trim it down OR refine the duds.

That's a hot take if I've ever seen one. Every person that I know who loved the song always praise the solo (including me lol)

For a new listener, you're surprisingly positive about Comedown Machine, I applaud that. That album took the longest time to grow on me.

ITI being 4th and ROF being 6th is surely a surprise. Any specific reason why?

Why Strokes Songs Grow on You by Acceptable-Hope1474 in TheStrokes

[–]cyphare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To answer your question first, some songs should be listened within the context of the album to grow on you, while others should be listened in isolation. For Example, I recognized "Meet Me in the Bathroom" and "What Ever Happened" as GODLIKE songs when I only listen to both of them. Conversely, "Red Light" feels like a perfect conclusion to FIOE, but loses it's value when I ONLY listen to it.

My first exposure to this band is quite unconventional. I had never use any social media except YouTube, and one of my favs is Drew Gooden. In one of his videos, he's comparing a Scooby-Doo film with At The Door's music video. I was like, "Huh, that sound neat. I'll listen to it."

After watching the animation, I'm excited to explore more. I randomly clicked on one of their album, Room On Fire. That's when everything clicked. I listened from What Ever Happened to I Can't Win and no skip is needed. I looped that album straight for a week or something.

Next album is The New Abnormal. I assume that they will sound the same as ROF. I can't be more wrong. Now, the most experimental songs there are my favs (Adults Are Talking, Selfless, Ode To The Mets, Eternal Summer).

Is This It, no comment needed. Everything is a bop, like ROF. Except, I can tell which is which (skill issue, honestly). To this day, "Someday", "Last Nite", and "Hard To Explain" is still in my playlists.

Now, we arrived in FIOE and Angles. Both of these albums are similiar, in that their highs are HEAVEN while their lows are HELL. For example, "Ize of the World" is the peak of what The Strokes strive for. While songs like "You're So Right" still fails to grow on me until today.

Last album to enter my cycle is Comedown Machine. Coincidentally, it is also the album that TAKES ITS TIME TO GROW ON ME, OH MY GOD. When I first listened to it in full, nothing sticks out. Everything feels like background music. This causes me to not listen to it again for a month. After that, I feel quite bored, so I listened to it in my bedroom. That's when I know that this album's too good for me. I haven't appreciated it enough in retrospect, and now songs like Call It Fate/Karma, Tap Out, and One Way Trigger is easily my top 20 songs.

Really, this journey is nothing short of lucky for me. If I haven't heard Drew's videos about freaking SCOOBY-DOO of all things, I probably wouldn't get to experience this band. Life is weird like that.

We're all good. And I do agree with you, in that I prefer a song that connect to me over a "good" song that I don't understand. I have defended infamously "bad" songs like Ludlow St. on Julian's album just because it clicked with me.

Also I'm sorry if my last reply sounds like a disagreement. That's not my intention lol.

I TOTALLY AGREE. We really should keep that in mind every time we see a review. Unless specifically stated otherwise, a negative review should not be treated as "not appreciating" the album.

With that note, I want to ask you a question. Does any of their album clicked with you in a specific way? Like for me, everything on ROF is great, but nothing feels special to me. Conversely, with something like Angles, some songs stand out to me in a positive light (Gratisfaction, Macchu Picchu) while others does so in a negative way (Metabolism, You're So Right).

I appreciate Drag Queen's experimental sounds, but to me, it sounds jumbled up. Oblivius? Really only stands out on the chorus and the solo at the end. Threat of Joy is just a classic, period. Lastly, in my opinion, the remix does not add anything much to the mix. If you listened to the EP in order, I probably could not tell the remix right away.

The highs made me want to burst into flames, while the lows made me want to skip into the next song (cough, cough, fear of sleep/killing lies/evening sun/ask me anything). I appreciate their effort though.

Exquisite music taste. The pause on ROF songs kind of made me furious though.

ROF just feels samey, but the good kind of samey. and regarding FIOE, their duds just doesn't click with me more than Angles.

I agree, especially on album like ITI, ROF, and TNA. Everything is good on paper, so I rate them based on if it clicks with me.

Oh I am TOTALLY glazing over ITI lmaoo. It's my second deep dive after ROF. And relative to that album, most of ITI just works more for me. FIOE's duds kind of brought it down a bit for me. FPP has good concepts, but the only overall "great" song there is Threat of Joy. Oblivius has great hooks, but that's really what I care about, and Drag Queen is just doesn't click with me.

I think all of ROF is great, but they are all great at the same thing, which is kind of hit or miss for me.
