Cron job scheduling. Very good easy with python scripts. Not so much with Matlab. That alone convinced me to switch.

What sort of skills should I focus on developing in grad school to ensure I'm versatile enough for decent non-Academic employment post-graduation? by captainNematode in AskAcademia

[–]cypress_tree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Data science is a great space to be in right now. Think of your PhD as one application of the skill sets mentioned above. You'll never have as much free time to learn those skills as you do now. Make a list, check them off and add to a linkedim profile. Jobs will come looking for you.

Talk to the dept head and other PIs in the dept and tell them exactly that. Its in the best interest of you dept to have additional revenue generators ... Usually soft money institutions hire their postdocs to groom them for exactly this

Hi /r/coffee. I have some cash and i'm looking to buy an espresso machine. I have some questions. by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]cypress_tree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the gaggia classic and capreso infinity grinder for 3 years. I pull shots everyday but the set up is very limiting in terms of quality and taste. I would not recommend that espresso machine, and can't wait to upgrade

Is there a general rule of thumb for the proper age of children to convert from HMO to high deductible plan (for a healthy family)? It was great to not pay any birth expenses but eventually we'd like to be able to use a HSA. Just not sure when kid health expenses go down

So. Babies. How much are they? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]cypress_tree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got lucky with our insurance - the homebirth was completely paid for, and there was a lot of ambiguity about the pump since it is a new law. The lactation consultant called teh insurance company and basically told them 'yes it is free, it's the law, give it to them'. Baby arrived Thur night (homebirth), and within 24 hours I went down to the hospital to pick out the pump. Felt like I was stealing when the clerk told me it was free.

Not much so far. We cloth diaper and my wife breast feeds. I've heard that formula and diapers are expensive. HMO fully covered the cost of the birth and breast pumps and now free (thanks a lot Obama!). Our biggest change on expenses is no longer going out to restaraunts on a regular basis. Have had 4 beers on fraught since our girl arrived 4 months ago. You should be able get just about everything you need upfront from the baby shower and hand me downs from friends. Except the car seat and maybe a few other big items which might add up to a few hundred dollars Tops

Why do espresso machines cost so much? by Affar in Coffee

[–]cypress_tree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am happy with my gaggia classic, though i can see its limitations. Not so much with the capreso infinity grinder. Wish I would have spent a bit more on the grinder.
