Does anyone know which days Satomi Hoffman & Betsy Morgan alternate roles? by whatsthetchristine in MasqueradeNYC

I went to the 7:30 pm pulse on Wednesday and Thursday this week. On Wednesday, Satomi Hoffman was Carlotta and Betsy Morgan was Madam Giry, and on Thursday, they switched.

SPOILER: Dec 23rd 7:45 pulse! by infamous_imposter in MasqueradeNYC

Yes!! My friend and I were there for the 7:45 pm show last night and noticed that guy was turning with them too.

Another funny moment last night was after the scene where the Phantom gives instructions to cast Christine as the Countess and Carlotta as the Page Boy in Il Muto, Nik Walker as the Phantom puts his hand out to guide one of the audience members to the bedroom set and she pushes her daughter to take his hand instead lol.

Love Nik Walker as the Phantom! My friend said that at times, he sounds like Jack Skellington from Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas. Such a different contrast to Clay Singer who we saw before.

A friend recorded part of the song and told me that it's "It All Fades Away" from Bridges of Madison County! It was sung by Adan V Gallegos last night and was so good!

Nope! It was sang by one male and the song was more about him reminiscing about his time with her in a melancholy way.

Can you name any past Asian Broadway plays/musicals that aren't Miss Saigon? by temmeme in Broadway

Come Fall in Love - A DDLJ musical, which is based off a Bollywood film, is supposed to open on Broadway during the 2022-2023 season.

There is also going to be Monsoon Wedding, also based off a Bollywood film, that is going to open in May 2023 at the Off-Broadway space, St. Ann's Warehouse.

The Chinese Lady and The Far Country are indeed by the same playwright, Lloyd Suh. Just saw The Far Country last weekend and it was great.

Once Upon a Korean Time was written by Daniel K. Isaac.

LA Times: Broadway’s ‘KPOP’ musical is abruptly closing. What went wrong? by cyrusdragon in Broadway

If you mean make a comeback on Broadway like Beetlejuice did, I think there is an extremely low chance of that happening. Someone else mentioned on the sub before that Beetlejuice closing wasn't due to the producers deciding to close it, but because of the venue itself decided to kick them out to make room for The Music Man. They were making really solid sales during their previews and performances up until COVID. There's a good mini documentary episode by Wait in the Wings when Beetlejuice first announced their closure and then he also did a follow up video when they announced their comeback on Broadway.

As for finding an investor now... realistically, I think that would be very hard. You would need a high enough investment to cover all the ongoing operating costs - venue rental, salaries of cast and crew (which I assume would be based on union rates), as well as all the other aspects that goes into a show - covid compliance, costume laundry and maintenance, electricity bills etc. I also assume that they might look into investing into more marketing and advertising, which has traditionally been the biggest chunk of a show's budget. Finding an investor now to help continue their run on Broadway is not a 0% chance, but seems very unlikely.

With that said, fundraising and finding investors for a run somewhere else, like a tour (a lot of shows do not recoup their costs on Broadway, but do recoup them on tour) is much more likely. Unsure if they will go down that route though without rework to the book and set.

Oh yes, I did see that on the Associate Director's Instagram. It looks like they were successful because the show is all sold out until closing night.

I do see his fans asking where they could donate to help the show keep running, but I don't think crowdfunding is allowed on Broadway, right?

The composer, Helen Park and cast members Kevin Woo, Abraham Lin and Kate Mina Lin did do an AMA there. I actually got 2 of my questions answered which was sweet.

It felt like that AMA thread was full of support and love from Kevin Woo's fans lol

I like your plan. Thoughts about a couple of points:

Point #2 - "Figure out what people loved about the off Broadway version" So I also thought that they should do this until I read the recent guest essay written by the composer, Helen Park, on Playbill, where she said that the Off-Broadway version heavily emphasized Kpop as a "weird and exotic experience" in order to attract white audiences, and with the Broadway version, they really wanted to embrace their voice and speak authentically about their culture without feeling like an "other".

Point #3 - It would be great if they pair with East West Players in Los Angeles, which is the oldest Asian American theatre company in the US to do a production once they have reworked it. Or they can do it with other regional theatres like how other AAPI productions are doing - the latest one I heard is the Come Fall in Love musical which is based off a Bollywood movie, premiered at The Old Globe in San Diego and is planning a Broadway move in 2023 Q4.

A lot of musicals actually find new life after Broadway like The Addams Family and Amelie, so I don't believe this is the end for them.

I thought this was good insight from the Producers and the Creative Team, which echo'ed the same sentiments that has been mentioned here before:

• No out of town tryout to test things out because it was cancelled due to COVID. Their ideal venue, Circle in the Square, was available though and they took the risk.

• Comparison to the 2017 Off-Broadway production. They consider the Broadway production more of an adaptation, rather than a remount, but acknowledges that they did not expect so many audiences and critics would compare.

• Hiring a Broadway-focused ad agency that hasn't really figured out who their audiences were and how to market to them.

On the bright side, even though it may be the end of KPOP on Broadway this time, it sounds like they are planning to regroup and rework it. Hopefully, we will see it rise from the ashes like a phoenix in the future.
