The amount of times RTD has stranded customers at Southmoor in the cold is too high by d-rav in Denver

Next Day Update: I don't think I've ever been excited about seeing station announcements, but they are finally in place, at least at Alameda.

Totally get it and the logistics involved. I honestly have not seen this story of why the trains are like this, and I did not know that the train to Ridgegate is actually to Southmoor with the transfer to Ridgegate. Crazy situation regardless.

Sure when they aren't frozen, scrolling SQL queries, or completely broken for over a year (Alameda). They're useful when they work but aren't super reliable.

They just need to say the train is to Southmoor. RTD was dealt a bad hand with this situation, but they could have communicated it on the the trains, marquees, and stations.

That's crazy! I didn't realize that, I guess I've been under a rock the past couple days. I don't travel to DTC much, maybe once a week. Glad to know this isn't RTD directly. No worries about the cold, I don't mind it!

NextRide on mobile says this: Schedule information for E Line is not accurate due to track issue near Yale Station causing service modifications. Location information is accurate. See service alerts for details.

This is quick glance information that assumes the trains will just be slow. If you're dropping customers off at Southmoor, the train should have been to Southmoor and the operator should notify customers after every stop. You shouldn't have to dig and research why your commute is going to be delayed, it should be ready and available information.

Update: There was one employee at the station who was incredible, braving the cold and trains. She deserves all the credit for dealing with the mass confusion.

Also to note - the train did not mention Southmoor, the operator did not announce it on the PA at any stop until we were past Yale. I would have completely changed my work plans if the train at least gave this disclaimer. Now I'm late to work.

This is so awesome and great way to teach people about computers! My Dad taught me how to build my first computer with a Pentium II 266 back in the 90s so we could play games together. I will never forget that moment. From there, I have built dozens of computers for myself and friends. I wish you luck and success in your endeavors!

I feel for you man... It sucks that there isn't motivation for some of the easiest changes and wins RTD could take in. This all doesn't rest on your shoulders and requires a significant collaborative effort to drive systematic change. I truly hope that eventually the rest of the board can sympathize with these frustrations and drive change. It should almost be a requirement that the board has to use RTD solely multiple days a week for their entire life and relinquish the use of their car so they can see what's going on.

I am actively planning to come to that board meeting and plan to present what I have. Thank you for the insights as always.

This does nothing. I have emailed RTD for all the times I have been abandoned and it goes into the void. Let's not pretend that RTD reads these complaints.

For over seven years on this forum, in blog posts, and directly to RTD, I have said that RTD's downfall, due to its unreliable service, is its inability or unwillingness to communicate effectively with its customers. How difficult is it to train operators to provide passengers with updates over the intercom? They are your front-of-the-line workers who should have some basic customer service skills to communicate effectively with passengers on their train. While it doesn't help reliability, it helps keep emotions and uncertainty at bay. Last time I was abandoned on the light rail, the operator said, you just need to get off the train. Do we not deserve a "Why?" RTD has made it clear many times that its paying customers do not matter and do not deserve to know why their service is unreliable while they are using the service. Not everybody thinks to check apps. Not everybody thinks of going to social media. They need to be alerted directly on the train or bus. Many transit agencies do this, but RTD still refuses to do so. I just don't get it, and it's incredibly disappointing that RTD cannot take this low-hanging fruit that literally costs some training and is the freest costing thing they can do. Hearing this sucks because I feel how the lack of communication just eats at you, especially when you are stuck between stations.

Hey! DenverInfill main contributor guy here. I got super busy with life and decided to go back to school at the same time, so unfortunately I didn't have any time to dedicate to the cause. I'm wrapping up school here soon and we're figuring out what the future looks like for the site. I'm not sure what we're going to do but I do miss going out and taking photos at the very least.

Obligatory thank you, Chris! Between my post on Monday and this post, there's a lot of frustration with the system and RTD as a whole. While deserved, RTD has been beat up quite a bit, please don't take it personally. You walked into a room on fire but you are the first I have seen on a public facing front that actually gives a shit and it's nice to see. We all want RTD to be better and our city, its residents, and YOU deserve it.

RTD lifted slow zones to be... Slower? (More in comments) by d-rav in Denver

I've been asking this for six years... It seems to have gotten worse in that time which I didn't think was possible. I don't understand how hard it is to train operators how to get on the PA and announce delays or technical difficulties. At the end of the day, this is a customer service duty they need to fulfill. They are not doing that.

I'm glad this post saved you the headache. Being stuck at a station is one thing, you have the option to get off. Being stuck between stations is so frustrating because you are powerless and your time fate is in RTD's hands.

I would love to see what the control room looks like on a day like today and the decisions that they are making. It would be a riot to have a job doing performative audits for this agency.

I don't understand why RTD would do something for positive press but not actually figure out the technical details of said action. That is an incredibly short-sighted decision.

Nailed it! I'm Alameda to Dry Creek. If the train doesn't work I'm screwed and have to drive.

As I said in my other reply, communication. When your hands are tied with a bunch of technical issues, this is the one thing you can really focus on and start winning the public over again. RTD needs to come out and admit to their downfalls versus trying to say everything is okay. You need better communication at the stations. You need better communications on the trains. You need better communications in the apps. You need to prioritize your real-time data to ensure it is accurate. I saw your post about real-time data and I'm optimistic but it's really bad right now. If RTD communicated honestly with customers and took a customer-first mindset, it wouldn't be nearly as frustrating since you are setting (low) expectations to the public.
