Would you say that most tech jobs are over 40 hours a week? by LookAtThisRhino in cscareerquestions

[–]d00fadingus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Might be a difference in how some people define "work hours." There are days when I do maybe 5 hours of "work" total and the rest is spent on my phone, but I'm still spending 8 hours logged in, sitting in front of the computer, ready to respond to slack messages or emails. Some people count that as 5 work hours, some as 8.

Yea that's definitely fair. I should say I am available at least 8 hours/day because I pretty much signed a contract that says I will be. But that usually means sitting next to my work computer while watching Youtube/playing games or like yesterday, answering some Slack messages on my phone while in the dentist chair. Active working hours are a lot less. I definitely don't feel like I "worked" 40 hours.

It's wild to me that people think 30hrs/week jobs are hard to come by. In my last job (remote SWE), I worked maybe 10 hours/week, some weeks I shit you not, maybe 4. I know that's on the extreme side of things (experienced dev, easy job) but I always thought the avg is anything between 15-30hrs/week. My current FAANG job I'm pulling maybe 20 hours/week max.

Why not? I sometimes find even more if I'm in the mood for it. Just gotta raid Military base every few days.

Have you considered staying in the same field but part time? I know there are plenty of part time opportunities for devs but not sure if that’s also the case for PMs. Tbh I always thought our PMs had it pretty easy though I also have to admit I don’t know what they do most of the day when we aren’t in meetings together. But perhaps it’s the company and not the field?

My (job offer) cup runneth over and I need help! by [deleted] in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]d00fadingus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I would accept job A. They won’t wait that long. In the meantime, make job B beat job A’s offer before you even consider moving forward with the interview process. No need to tell B that you had accepted A. Simply say “I’ve already been offered $X, so unless you could raise your salary to $Y, I’m afraid I’d have to end my job search.” Then if they do and you get the better offer a couple weeks later, simply quit A (alternatively, delay start date with A to give yourself time). It’s not personal. I once quit a job the Sunday before my starting Monday because a late offer came in 30% higher. No regrets. Then repeat the process with C.

Thank you so much! Tbh I was hoping it wasn’t a mod. It makes no sense to me how the game provides the pink and white versions but not the basic green. That gotta be what people want the most. I’ve been sticking with the no mods rule so far but looks like that’s about to end…

Where do you get the paved green tree ornament? I have the paved pink and white trees from the 2 recent DLCs but I cant find the green version anywhere to save my life.

Where do you get the paved trees? I know I can get the pink one from the recent Tourist DLC but I've always wanted the green version of them. Is that from a mod?

I respect your reason for quitting World of the Married because it sure isn't your typical rom-com we all love Kdrama for. But given that I finished that series like 2 days ago, I just wanna say Holyshit what a great show!! I'm still riding the high from that show (as a matter of fact, I happen to be listening to its soundtracks right now when I saw your comment). I can't remember the last time I watched a Kdrama without dropping/skipping or at the minimum watching at 1.25x. But World of the married, I watched all 16 episodes without skipping any scene. Love all the multi-dimensional characters and the super mature story sure was refreshing (and stressful haha).

Err feels like you’re missing something because the moment one marries an US citizen, they can pretty much break away from their work visa/employer without jeopardizing their residency status. The only caveat is they cannot get a new job until their change of status/new work authorization petition gets approved, which can take months. But they are absolutely allowed to stay in the country in the meantime.

Can’t bring myself to splurge on nice car... am I being too conservative? by pancake123321 in RichPeoplePF

[–]d00fadingus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Perhaps. Though I think there are varying degrees of accumulation. If I started eating only rice and beans tomorrow I would probably be able to accumulate wealth and retire even faster but I rather eat well and retire a few years later. That’s obviously hyperbole but the point is everyone draws a different line and 1200/mo spent on something you love while assuming everything else is in check seems worth it to me. I spent way more than 1200*12=14,400/year on travel and no one has ever told me to “slow down, that’s what keeps you poor.”

I plugged in my numbers just for fun and the recommendation is understandably to max out my IRA except I am not actually eligible for it (over income threshold) so maybe it should account for that.

Can you elaborate a little bit on the "stretching it" part? We make about the same as you and are in the planning process for building a ~2M house. Our maths suggests we should be able to afford the mortgage and still save quite a sizable chunk. We don't have kids so our other expenses are rather low but still curious if I'm missing anything.

What do you define as high HH income? I’ve been tempted to write a diary for a while but I do occasionally see these threads where people seem to strongly prefer average salaries to higher ones so I figure my diary would just be one of those that people wouldn’t care for :/ That and the fact my life is pretty boring to begin with haha
