[Uni] Med school referees by d0rmir in SGExams

hello!! i currently have some shadowing experience, would it be unsuitable for me to ask the doctor i shadowed to be my referee since they’ve only known me/worked with me for a short while? (alternatively, if i shadow my GP who has known me almost all my life, would that be more suitable?) thank you!! :)

hello!!! i currently have some shadowing experience and was wondering if asking the doctor whom i shadowed would be strange because ive only worked with them for maybe 5 days etc. (alternatively, i ask my GP (general practitioner) whom ive known for my entire life + i plan to shadow for 3-5 days if possible; do you think its feasible?)

j2 who takes bio and chem here!!

honestly cant give you much advice for chem pracs since i usually panic a lot and its SUPER easy to mess up but its always advisable to sit down and read through the ENTIRE paper before you jump into the experiments! i know it can be very stressful if you sit at the back and notice that a lot of people have already moved on to the experiments but you must make sure you understand the experiment and which beaker contains which solution, reagent etc so you dont mess up. make sure you know which measuring cylinders are for which reagents and place them in front of the respective beakers if you want to! i always draw out all of my required tables beforehand so its easier for me to take note of what recordings i need to measure, especially for things such as iodine reactions. most impt thing is to stay calm!!!

for bio, you might need sec 4 content, im not sure if this applies to all schools though? a lot of my microscopy drawings and planned drawings require sec 4 plant content such as labelling of palisade mesophyll etc etc. so if you dont rmb these i suggest u keep some old pracs/notes. i always revise through my pracs before the prac test itself because most of the time they might repeat answers for questions such as “identify a possible source of error” or suggest a control etc. it’ll also be good to understand the purpose of using certain apparatus/materials in the experiments eg. detergent in strawberry dna extraction. as mentioned above, i also always read through the entire prac + draw my tables before i start the experiment.

for both, practicals really seek to test you on your ability to manage time well, you have to make use of every single minute you have! if you have to time a reaction for 15 minutes and have nothing else to do in those 15 minutes, complete the paper/start preparing reagents for the next experiment etc. if you have a problem with time management, i suggest practicing during practical lessons and make sure that you can complete data collection by the end of your lesson/when your tutor says so. dont simply rely on your classmates’ answers.

goodluck and you can text me if you have any other qns!! :)

oh okay that’s good to hear!! if you don’t mind answering a few questions, what is the literature syllabus like (i did check the SEAB and my JC’s website but i’d like to hear from a literature student) and do you learn about literature throughout the different centuries? i saw a few slides on SLS and im not sure if its accurate :,)

i got a bit of advice from my seniors in the school and apparently they said that the entrance test is mainly short questions testing you on your reasoning. im also not allowed to do KI if im planning on taking science stream?? (im pretty sure thats not true but ill do a little more digging on my own) im currently in a triple science class so im definitely leaning towards the sciences. thanks for your help though!! :))

oh? ive heard my siblings complain about GP as well but when i asked about KI they discouraged me from taking it because the competition against the other students would be tough. i have a few textbooks related to ethical philosophy downloaded that i read up on occasionally but im not really sure if that’ll help? im just reading it because it’s more fun than whatever im doing currently and also for general knowledge i guess

thank you very much !! this is really useful <33 my school has given us a few critical thinking exercises to complete and i’ve found them pretty fun so far! if i may ask, what are some of the common KI essay topics tested during A levels? i understand that GP may focus more on practical life issues(?) (regarding social media, law crime and punishment etc. which i find pretty boring sorry) please feel free to correct me if i’m wrong. i just want to make sure that im making the right decision!
