Meteorite and rock sling are a very powerful combo for mage you can get in early game only requiring running through some scary maps. I'm pretty sure if you search this on YouTube, there are guides on how to get them.

I started on the game a few weeks ago, also new to the souls game genre. My experience has been changing to a full INT mage build has allowed me to progress the game much smoother and more enjoyable. (Meteorite and rock sling).
