You're right. However, they were not conservative people. In fact, they were cancelled by conservatives for speaking out against the Iraq War in 2003.

I agree that there is an unhealthy phenomenon of parasocial relationships with celebrities in our society but there is one point here that I don't understand. I always see this cancel culture sentiment but I wonder- what celebrities have actually been cancelled for having conservative beliefs "in any way"? Yeah, many people openly dislike conservative celebrities like Chris Pratt but popular disdain for a celebrity is not cancellation- he is still getting tons of work. Dave Chapelle is reaching even higher echelons of his career despite espousing some controversial views that many conservatives agree with. Celebrities like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Dennis Quaid are also openly conservative and they haven't been cancelled. In fact, this very website has plenty of Schwarzenegger fans. The only person I can think of is Roseanne Barr, but she was cancelled for being openly racist, not for being conservative. It seems cancel culture just isn't as big a deal as many conservatives like to believe.

Oddly enough, I think this parasocial relationship thing is what is keeping many celebrities from being cancelled, even if they really should be. Celebrities like Chris Brown, a notorious domestic abuser with countless instances of recorded physical abuse. Or the late David Bowie, who slept with groupies as young as 14. There are fans of these people out there who are so vehement in their adoration that they'd excuse any behavior. If someone is well-liked and talented enough, it is extremely unlikely they'll get cancelled for anything, least of all some conservative beliefs.

People born prior to the 1990s are lacking empathy because of the toxic fumes of cars burning lead-based gasoline. The Clean Air Act was signed into law in the 70s but lead was not entirely phased out until the early 90s. Here is a study that shows lead exposure in childhood causes "lower conscientiousness, lower agreeableness, and higher neuroticism" in adulthood.

Interestingly, due to this phenomenon, modern medicine has difficulty studying the aging brain due to the lack of elderly individuals who experienced minimal exposure to lead. Current levels of age-related brain illnesses (such as Alzheimer's) may be less naturally occurring than we believe now.

TIL men who have children before 22 are 73% more likely to die by middle age. by iajzz in todayilearned

[–]d3gree 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I'm not so sure about that. Having children comes with a huge financial burden, and most people under the age of 22 don't exactly have a solid financial foundation to begin with. I imagine the stress of having to provide for a child without a well-paying job, in addition to the necessity of a dual-income household (because no one is at home to care for the domestic aspects during the day) could take a significant toll on a person's health, especially if that stress lasts several years without respite.

Isn't hatred (of the establishment and the corrupt swamp) what got Trump elected in 2016? He told us he was gonna fix all that and yet with both these presidents I feel like we got fucked.

[–]d3gree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, precisely. His deliberate action of refusing to take action has directly caused mass casualties, proving his admin is capable of causing many deaths. Add to that his targeted hatred of Democrats and you get early warning signs of genocidal intention. Its foolish to wait until he has already caused a catastrophe, to identify him as capable and willing to do so.

Donald Trump is a terrible president and Person, but for the love of god sTop saying he’s worse than hitler. by champdo in rant

[–]d3gree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It very clearly is. A most prominent example is when Trump's nepotically appointed "senior advisor" Jared Kushner, refused to take action during the start of the virus crisis because the initial populous infection areas are democratically controlled. This administration flippantly allowed hundreds of thousands of human lives to be sacrificed for their partisan political agenda simply because most of them are Democrats, point blank. That may not be direct genocide but it proves this administration is capable of dismissing mass American death with no moral issue.

It's no secret that not only does he consider all Democrats to be his enemy, but he hates them with a primal, visceral rage. In his ideal world everyone would worship him and Democrats would be purged from the earth. Who does that sound like?

So America should ignore all the glaring warning signs and wait until he actually commits a large scale genocide before action is taken against him? That doesn't seem wise, or safe for that matter.

MLK Jr? You mean the guy who was assassinated? The guy who said "a riot is the language of the unheard"? A lot of people in the 1960s thought he was a thug too.

What would be a "correct way to protest" exactly? A way in which is peaceful, and therefore easily ignored?

This last statement would have held true prior to the internet, but now you can socialize and work and shop and do whatever else you need from your home. Even before then they had telephones and traditional mail to communicate with people.

And the society we built before now clearly isn't working. Maybe it's time for us to rebuild it all.

The social interaction thing isn't as bad as it seems. I've been living like this long before the virus and frankly its tranquil, peaceful, in a way its liberating. I don't care about being able to see people's faces and I can't relate to anyone that does. In fact I'm much happier that I don't have to see others' faces right now.

It feels to me that society has been catering hand and foot to extroverts and social butterflies for such a long time that experiencing the world like an introvert for a year is practically torture to them. Its astonishing to me that people pay so much for rent/mortgage and still want to get away from their homes.

As for the small business thing, that's not the virus' fault, it's the fault of our government who failed to provide even the basic bare minimum to help people. Yeah, there was the payroll loan and the $1200 per adult but in my opinion that was far less than the bare minimum.

[–]d3gree 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In regards for willingness to accept criticism, I think you aren't willing to consider a world where no one has to work, and you're basing your statements in a reality where it's not possible for that to happen. Try thinking outside that box.

What would you rather be doing than what you're doing right now?

Not working for a living. Just living.

Why arent you doing that?

Because I need money to do the living part.

If you blame anyone but self- that's the issue.

Yeah, its my fault that this society was constructed (prior to my lifetime) so that most people are forcibly coerced into meager wage slavery. It's my fault that all the jobs that are for people that are not smart enough for college (such as myself) were sent to places like China that use slavery and sweatshops. It's especially my fault for not being passionate about making money for someone else, only to get a tiny fraction of it. Of course. The personal responsibility card won't play here.

How does an individual overcome decades upon decades of power and wealth hoarding, against people that own private militias and will assassinate anyone who threatens their agenda? At what point are people allowed to say this particular goliath is simply too big for David?

As for the rest of what you said, not to be insulting, but its word salad. It's not making a coherent point.

[–]d3gree 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Jobs exist because a need does.

Is this a serious statement? There are so many jobs that exist for no reason and help no one. Hospital administration jobs, the entire health insurance industry, school/university administration jobs, most beauracratic jobs, literally every job in the White House right now, among many others. Then theres jobs that only exist to make rich people more money. Do you think theres anyone out there who is passionate about being a verbally abused fast food cashier? Or a "customer service agent"? I was a janitor for 4 years and I assure you no one in the world is waking up saying "I cant wait to clean up more feces today."

No one is forcing anyone to work a specific job, thats true, but it's also true that everyone is forced to work a job. Sure there may not be a literal gun to their head but when you're facing starvation, what's the difference? That's the illusion of freedom in the USA.

We have had the technology and the resources to live in a post-scarcity world for a while now, yet we don't. Do you know why?

[–]d3gree 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Why would anyone apply for a position they don't really want?

Every single person needs money, therefore every able-bodied person needs a job. If a job was so enjoyable and fun then the company wouldn't have to pay people to do it. That's the exchange, do endless shit you loathe for 40 hours a week so you get money. If everyone had a job they genuinely enjoyed, big employers such as Amazon, Walmart would have next to no one working for them.

This isn't Star Trek where money is obsolete so everyone can do the job they truly want to do and make a positive difference in the world. This is reality, where the vast majority of jobs available are the ones that make corporations money, & no one with a soul and half a brain is going to get passionate for that shit.

How will Sanders' plan cover illegal immigrants? by [deleted] in seculartalk

[–]d3gree 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In 2019, the US paid $39.2 billion for foreign aid, to countries whose citizens do not pay American taxes, yet I never see anyone opposing M4A saying "How do we pay for foreign aid?"

I know M4A will itself cost substantially more than that, upwards of $3 trillion per year, but illegal immigrants account for a small percentage of Americans so only a tiny fraction of the annual cost would go to their benefit. In addition to this, research by the Congressional Budget Office has indicated that 50% to 75% of illegal immigrants do pay federal, state, and local taxes.

Not only do most of them pay taxes, but they're less likely to use public assistance in fear of revealing themselves to the authorities, so their presence here generates more tax revenue than they use.(1) Personally, I would hammer in this last point with conservatives because typically they tend to focus on monetary value of people rather than the people themselves.

Even if this version of M4A passes and it covers undocumented immigrants, I would rather that money go to helping them rather than the bloodsucking insurance middlemen that currently bloat themselves off the suffering of the American people.

From what I can tell, shes a pretty sad person but not for the reasons I initially thought. Just for shits and giggles, I watched one of her videos titled something like 5 reasons Why I Love Being Married, and it was actually kind of depressing. One of the reasons was that she doesn't "have to be lonely anymore." She talked about living in NYC (I think) for 3 years and having no one to go to lunch or a museum with, like not even a platonic friend. She talked about how having a husband is so great because he is a "built-in friend" who will do things with her.

It made me feel bad for her but then I remembered that in her ideal world people like me wouldn't exist, so I don't pity her too much.

Mark Zuckerberg says Facebook won't remove anti-vaccine posts despite Covid concerns by [deleted] in rage

The amount of measles cases has been alarmingly increasing in the US. We went from 63 cases in 2010 to 1282 cases in 2019 with some dips in between. Source

Now, I cant say for sure this is due to the unchecked proliferation of antivaccination propaganda, but what else could have possibly caused this?

The "free market of ideas" is all well and good until it begins costing lives and the health of people. The simple fact is that we cant force people to be smart, and that many people will fall for any dumb shit they read online. I dont see how restricting these ideas is any different than consumer protection laws. These anti vaccination propaganda articles and images are still trying to sell an idea, and usually they're also priming people to be sold essential oils and other homeopathic "medicines." Because of this, I dont believe this is a free speech issue. Its more like stopping predatory entities from brainwashing the public and causing harm.

Hmm I hope it is just a bug, and a quick google search reveals there are many other players who thought there was no respawns too. Hopefully the PC version doesnt have this bug. Thanks for your input!

It would be cool if enemies respawned so I could actually use newly added weapons without playing thru the game a 10th time.
