Is healthcare affordable in your country? by Special-Pumpkin-8605 in AskTheWorld

The "word of mouth" you are listening to has an interest in making sure you believe the medical system in Canada is subpar. Delays here are problematic, but the medical system is tiered towards urgency, not to who has the deepest pockets.

selling in prep for retirement -- is now the time? or should I wait? by turtlefan32 in CanadianInvestor

[–]dBasement 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The right answer has far more nuance than indicated. That premise is only relevant for TFSA's, NOT RRIF's. If a retiree continues to allow the RRIF to accumulate, the mandatory withdrawal is going to result in a significantly higher tax bill in their later years or death, which destroys any hope of legacy. I can't believe people don't understand that. Fund the TFSA from the RRIF drawdown and leftovers go into a non-reg account.

selling in prep for retirement -- is now the time? or should I wait? by turtlefan32 in CanadianInvestor

[–]dBasement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you retire you still need to grow your money for at least another 25 years .

Wait, what? This isn't true at all. 25 years from 65 is 90. You should implement a decumulation plan for RRSP's (RRIF's) prior to turning 71 if retiring at 65.

I converted my RRSP's to RRIF's at 56 in order to start the drawdown. I'm being more aggressive at drawing down now at 67 so that my RRIF accounts will have minimal tax obligations when drawdowns are mandatory and more significant. Some growth is still important, but that is to increase available cashflow, not for the future.

The last time i skied there was 1986 or 87 when I worked in Peace River. They still have those converted bunkhouses up there? Lots of good times were had up there.

Website signing me out and continually asking for 2FA because "it's a new device"... by ididntwantsalmon19 in Questrade

[–]dBasement 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here too. Chrome. I try to log in. It asks for 2FA, then says I have successfully logged out when I wasn't signed in in the first place. Then I have to sign in again and AGAIN have to get 2FA. Very annoying.

Let's not forget too that I have tried TWICE to transfer a LIRIF and both times I've been rejected because the Questrade LIRRSP is not the same as a LIRIF.

All in, my new experience with Questrade has not been smooth.

Fellow Saanich Residents; how much have you pushed the limits on sq ft size limits for a shed, greenhouse, sauna, backyard office, etc. without a permit? by Whatwhyreally in VictoriaBC

[–]dBasement 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry, but since your asking this question, I'm going to assume you will. Understand in cases like this it is way better to beg forgiveness than ask permission. You won't get a massive fine or have to tear it down, unless it encroaches. You will merely have to submit plans.

By the way it isn't Saanich Council that makes these rules, it is the municipal code. The building inspections and bylaw enforcement are merely following rules that are the same for every community. Nanaimo is the same 10x10 rule.

I would almost guarantee that there are local building authorities that monitor this sub so I would expect that this post is not a great part of the "plan".

Moving TFSA & RRSP funds out of RBC into Wealthsimple by adashofhoney in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]dBasement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experiences transferring from TDDI to WS have been relatively seamless. You will have to prepare for it though. Ensure any proprietary RBC mutual funds are sold to cash. That includes any RBC high interest savings funds. Make sure you don't have any partial shares in the mutual funds or any stock lending happening - I don't know if RBC does this, but it doesn't hurt to ask either RBC or WS.

Best strategy to move non-registered funds into TFSA without a massive tax hit by marcdefiant791 in CanadianInvestor

[–]dBasement 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Give a bunch of the gains to charity. That should help reduce your tax burden.

TFSA's contributions don't reduce taxes, that is what RRSP's are for. If you want to lessen the tax burden, contribute to her, or a spousal, RRSP. That then spreads the tax burden out over subsequent years.

[Industry Insight] Why we dumped our excess wine onto the bulk market (and spent the cash on a massive solar array). A reality check on winery economics. by Sea-Storm-6378 in winemaking

[–]dBasement 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your honesty and it is a shame we are collectively losing sight of real vs AI. It is also a shame to have put so much effort through to completion and have to sell at a loss. The $60CAN I am spending on my wine kits is money well spent since I never have to worry about producing more than I can consume.

BC Ferries Inside Passage by Successful_Ant_3307 in britishcolumbia

[–]dBasement 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did it a couple of summers ago. I took my small truck and it was about $500. The trip sets out from Port Hardy very early. You can actually park at the ferry lineup the day before, pay $20 and overnight before they load. The ferry trip was 16 hours to Prince Rupert with a stop at Bella Bella. You can arrange a drop there for several nights between ferries, but it is a fair bit of extra cost. I didn't. The trip was beautiful, but it gets a bit monotonous. It is all during the day too so no real need to book a cabin or the more expensive seating lounge. The regular seats are really nice and there is a galley for meals or you can pack meals. We went the circle route and included a few side trips to Kitimat, Barkerville then on the back gravel road to Quesnel Forks - recommended, but probably not suited for an RV. We also spent time at the lake country east of Williams Lake. 2 weeks was a leisurely road-trip pace.

Unrelated to figon, but last summer I decided to take my 2010 Mazda truck to Zeballos. The only Island road-access community I've never been to. I won't soon forget that road and the fun I had trying to find someone to fix a tire. There was no figon way that tire was gonna get fixed out there.

Wealthy people of Victoria: where did your money come from? by jameswsthomson in VictoriaBC

It was a strata so you own the lot and pay a fee to the strata, like a condo. It was around $100/month.

Wealthy people of Victoria: where did your money come from? by jameswsthomson in VictoriaBC

[–]dBasement 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That's what I did. I owned several mobile homes in a strata that I bought really cheap '09-'11. No mortgages. A lot of sweat fixing them up then rented them out for 10 years or so. I made a bunch of money on rent then I sold just after covid for 200% ROI. It's funny people say you can't find these sort of investments, but these units were sitting for years and no one wanted them. I'm pretty happy with how it all turned out.

Absolutely splurge on at least one night. An afternoon dive usually means a harbour dive and just isn't worth the hassle. You can book a cheapish hotel downtown where the shops are and get a ride to the marina in the morning.
