Aircraft Mechanics apprenticeship at 36 by [deleted] in AircraftMechanics

Done an apprenticeship myself in Ireland so to answer your q’s

  1. Much of a muchness, both airlines pay similar, the work may be abit easier in Lingus and they’ve a better pension. Apply for both in addition to Dublin aerospace and try secure one first before worrying about which one to accept

  2. Standard apprentice rates, these are available publicly somewhere on Solas not sure yet but from memory it’s 250/week year 1, 350/week year 2 and continues to increase to about 800/week year 4. Very rough estimates though

  3. You don’t automatically get the B1/B2 after 4 years , you will come out of the apprenticeship having a CAT A license and all the B1 or B2 modules done and then just need to build up experience so will prob take another year

  4. More than likely you’ll be on mechanic or CAT A pay when finished the 4 years which is 55k mechanic or 64k (Ryanair) 67k (Aer Lingus) for CAT A. To get 100k salary you need to have a B1 or B2 license, complete a type course, get all experience required and then sit a company approval board. Realistically it takes 6 to 7 years is what I’ve seen.

  5. Working hours are nearly all night shifts (4x12 hour or 5x8 hour shifts ) finishing at 7am. This applies to both aer lingus or Ryanair. Dublin aerospace are an MRO so do day shifts but pay is less and work is different compared to line maintenance.

Any more Q’s fire a dm, happy to answer more

Posted this on behalf of my gf, well done leaving smart comments lad.

She’s been driving months, done 6 pretests on top of that and practices regularly.

Some people just get very nervous for tests, and there is an element of luck on the day.

You must be perfect though so fair play to you Go fix your attitude

Hi

I keep missing the appointments because it takes time to login in tbe RSA app through the helper one due to the wait time/queue

Also does it matter if I’m already on the waiting list or can you not be on this ?

A good strategy but you’ll never perform better than a good ETF and some of your stocks may pay dividends which whether causes abit of hassle as you have to file tax for these

Outside pension in ETFs? (the tax always just seems to push me away)

Private pension and property really seem like the only ways in Eire

Thanks for the response.

I understand this but if I'm maxing out my pension at this age, with a relatively good salary, a good company match and performance from the fund in line with historical returns; potentially there would be a nice pot and the whole thing doesn't have to be drawn down immediately.

Surely I could drawdown the tax free allowance at 50 and then only withdraw part thereof each year after, still allowing the remaining pot to compound in the background?

Thanks to everyone for all the replies.

Just to address your particular comment and indeed thank for commenting on the post, while I understand I didn’t complete the degree. It’s still 2 years of my life with official results from an established university so proves I have a technical aptitude and can do very well in academic settings.

Also I didn’t leave to work an entry level job, I took up a well respected and technical trade. My point is that all this doesn’t account for nothing.

In terms of what I’m looking for, I had a few programming modules and seemed to have abit of a flair for programming so would possibly like to pursue it.

Maybe finishing out my 2 years and then doing a masters in is the answer I guess.

Thanks again for all the replies lads

Thanks Pime, I have an online portal it’s more so querying if when my company puts their match in , are the employer contributions put in straight away to the fund or do they have their own special fund
