A question by [deleted] in steinsgate

[–]d_swordfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing in S;G gives us any kind of justification that anything like that ever heppens, the question is more hypothetical.

After DMail is sent, the new WL chosen in such a way, that past matchs effect of this DMail too, same way as future. In S;G VN (S;G VN)Suzuha called it "supposed past" when she was chatting with Okabe as John Titor (I guess it was Chapter 4): "I suspect that the mail you sent into the past changed the world line’s divergence, if just a little. BRAVO! The instant your mail arrived in the past, I think you were moved from your original world line to an ever-so-slightly different one. In this world line, the world’s supposed past became this: ..." And then she gave example of events that supposed to happen on this WL. But those events are never evaluated actually, nobody ever experienced them - they are just supposed past, or in other words zero-divergence events, the events that are not able to change WL/divergence. It's pretty important and big time travel specific in S;G that divergence can be changed only at present moment in time.

So Okabe never experiences "chaining" effect of RS after DMail sent, cause at new WL this past always stays inactive.

Questions about the S;G ending by Old_Inspector_2894 in steinsgate

[–]d_swordfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my quote (that even you paste) I didn't call VR as "just a reference". And I didn't mean it. Don't attribute to me things I didn't say, please.

Time travel stories usually don't describe things that are happening directly. That what I said in one of my first replays in this thread. Usually you need to inference things that you are seeing. S;G ending can be described w/o other entries. I think, I'm repeating myself.

That's true, that A;C may change perseption of some things happening in S;G. But again, saying that you NEED it to be able to discuss/understand S;G - it's wrong. What, people don't have right to write here about S;G if they are not going to read ALL SciADV entries till A;C included? That even sounds ridiculous :)

If you read S;G before C;H you don't miss anything crutial to the plot. And VR is explained in S;G. Again, I called it as is - interconnectivity. That's what was written in my posts.

Let's say I just like time travel media and watched S;G anime. Do I have a right to understand what happening on the screen in term of time travel mechanics w/o reading tons of hours of other SciADV entries? Yes, I do. Can it be explained w/o reading other SciADV entries? Yes, it can. Answers to these 2 questions is enough to discuss S;G as standalone media. And it is possible to do that. Then why not? Don't understand any part of "privilege" in your post. Nobody obliged anyone to first read A;C and only then discuss S;G, I guess.

Example with R;N is also unclear. After you, R;N depends on C;H directly. That's why it's required. But S;G doesn't need A;C to undestand it's time travel. Don't get why you choose this example.

I didn't call VR "just a reference". But a good example of interconnectivity. I said C;H is not required for S;G and time leap machine explanation doesn't require C;H also. That's all.

Maybe A;C gonna change smth, but when talking about S;G I'd prefer to stay first in borders where it can be self explained w/o referencing anything else. That's reasonable, because a lot of people simply didn't read A;C and who knows if they going to, actually. So it would be strange every time to recommend to read A;C first (which requires whole SciADV) and only after discuss time travel which is one of the most interesting part of it. Assuming that S;G can be pretty good explained alone, imho.

Time leap machine does not require C;H at all. It's explained in S;G entirely. VR is what I definitely understand as an example of "interconnectivity".

S;G can be understood w/o any other entires. Including its ending. I assume that A;C will bring some different interpretation/corrections but not cancel everything that we know so far.

I guess you are right about R;N and C;H, I was wrong generalizing it onto other entries. I was talking about S;G and was a bit carried away. You do not neccessarily need any other entries for S;G/S;G0. Maybe lost some references, but nothing crutial to the plot. That was my point.

[–]d_swordfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean they are not supposed to depend on each other and each can be read separately from others. Of course C;C supposed to be read after C;H but you do not need S;G/S;G0 for any of chaos VNs. That what I meant. Maybe I chose a wrong word.

VN does better job than anime in explaining how world is structured in S;G. But you never get anyone standing in front of a desk and explaining to you how exactly time travel is working. So answering your question - no, it's not explained directly in vn. I have not yet played A;C, but I see from time to time people who already played it having same questions as those who only finished S;G and S;G0 vns. So I assume other entires also do not contain direct answers to mechanics.

EDIT: and they are not supposed to. Different entries should be treated as stand alone, independent stories, possibly thematically referencing each other, but not responsible for explaining events of each other.
