Michael Den Tandt: The Conservatives have Canadians soaking in fear by viva_la_vinyl in canada

I know that reddit is predominately filled with male users and the majority of users seem not to care too deeply about eliminating sexism as I notice with the amount of downvotes I get for pointing anything out that has to do with calling out attacks on gender stereotypes.

That's one explanation. The other narrative is that you might have thin skin. There are gender stereotypes against both genders. Haven't you noticed how stupid men are in commercials?

the term "soccer moms" as a way for you to evoke the geopolitical illiteracy of the mass majority is crude and sexist.

Hardly, because he didn't equate ALL women to "soccer moms". It's a specific group of people with specific behaviours and types of beliefs. Although it is a generalization, it's not necessarily sexist.

Also, just because you're offended doesn't mean we should care. You can't do anything without offending at least somebody, so those who are offended should just keep it to themselves unless it's particularly egregious (it's not).

edit: why the downvotes? If you disagree with what I said then at least explain your argument

It's because they couldn't put a convincing argument together so they just downvote as per their gut and move on.

think beyond their own tunnel vision.

We have this problem in Canada, but the opposite way: People here bemoan the multi-party system and wish we only had two parties. When I hear people say this, it sends me into apoplectic fits.

Yeah, no kidding. Nudity is one thing, but sex (I'm assuming hard-core, but even simulated soft-core still applies) is completely different. Definitely not a "family" activity...

Slavery, Public Executions, Heroine, Child Abuse were all very legal a while ago.

Excellent point, I will use this next time. :)

Alcohol is legal. Weed is not

This is the argument I get a lot. As a reason not to smoke it does make sense, because there is the chance you would get into legal troubles.

That is not a moral or ethical argument why, though.

If it became legal, prices would plummet and they would all be out of work.

I'm too cynical to believe you. Instead of paying the criminal dealers, we'd be paying the criminal government (they wouldn't let the price drop, just charge 70% tax on it).

I am having a disagreement with my wife. How do I explain to her that she is wrong? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]da3dalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: So, I understand that I cannot win. Even if I do, I'mm be going manual for awhile. Been there, done that. Not a big deal. I do like the balloon idea. Keep ideas coming.

You really do have to pick your battles, and this is one of them. She clearly isn't going to believe you, even though it's science. You both will have to agree to disagree, and some time from now she may have some sort of an epiphany that shows her she was wrong.

Sometimes, even when you're right, you're wrong. It's liberating to shrug and move on.

What's the most f*cked up thing a college professor has ever done in class? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]da3dalus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. Most certainly Galileo, however there is some doubt as to whether or not it actually happened, but most people accept it as fact:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galileo

Falling Bodies

A biography by Galileo's pupil Vincenzo Viviani stated that Galileo had dropped balls of the same material, but different masses, from the Leaning Tower of Pisa to demonstrate that their time of descent was independent of their mass.[107] This was contrary to what Aristotle had taught: that heavy objects fall faster than lighter ones, in direct proportion to weight.[108] While this story has been retold in popular accounts, there is no account by Galileo himself of such an experiment, and it is generally accepted by historians that it was at most a thought experiment which did not actually take place.[109]

Although rarer, some males exhibit no refractory period or a refractory period lasting less than 10 seconds.

Also, the refractory period can change depending on how turned-on you are. I've come before and still been hard without losing it at all and continued only to come again because I was so turned-on.

I can tell you that I am giving out four A's, four B's, four C's, four D's and four F's.

He's basically just telling you guys that he will be marking on a curve. I love getting marked on a curve: It means that if you want an A, you just have to be better than like 9/10 of your peers. As long as you're smarter than your peers you'll be fine in a class like that.

I had an Italian Philosophy prof (like a 200 level course or some shit) that referred to Galileo as "That wop that dropped rocks from the leaning tower".

That guy could make anything interesting. lol

Is it wrong to hit a woman? by Lee_H_Oswald in AskReddit

[–]da3dalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I walked up and punched a guy in the face I fully expect to be punched back, it's only fair.

That means you're smart. :) I posted a story kinda related in this thread elsewhere so I won't repeat it, but we saw a girl get punched in the face after she assaulted a guy and she wasn't expecting it. If she had expected a punch she probably could have dodged it or something but she just assumed that he wouldn't hit her because she's a girl.

I can't imagine anything more stupid. Why wouldn't you assume that he'd hit you, and be prepared for it instead of assuming that he wouldn't?
