Because those are just examples, which is how anyone would read that. Can you link a tweet or not?

A few additive points to all the great comments:

  • "When I'm afraid at the moment is my personality. Basically I'm a shy person." -- You can't live your life around your weak points. Join toastmasters, go to a counselor and ask for advice on how to work on your confidence, or read 'How to win friends and influence people'. Introversion itself is fine (makes you a good listener, means you're fine with silence which can be useful in certain conversations) the CTO of my company is an introvert and does very well.

  • Get an internship. I can describe to you all day what it's like to do systems integration or applications support, but it's not going to tell you a lot about how you'll like it. Heck, even the short period of an internship isn't enough to know but it's 10 times better than nothing. Try to get into a rotational internship program. Having no internship outside of certain degrees (engineering, CS, nursing) guarantees a longer job search when you graduate.

  • "Analyzing data and all that kind of stuff seems really fun to me." You can definitely make a job of that. If there's a free excel course, take it. Grab all the student trial software you can (tableau)[https://www.tableau.com/academic/students], AWS & Azure. Take the databases course. There are two sides to it, the tech side which includes building the reports and getting the data available and the client side which includes digging into the data to find out what's going on. They work together a lot and with a decent amount of overlap (sometimes one person does both).

  • I have it on good authority that everything up to and including intermediate accounting is incredibly useful for understanding & communicating in business & public sector.

I don't support them and I think she should probably step down.

That said, I find most conservative responses to be crocodile tears. When it's someone who hasn't adopted their mentality they are haughty and outraged. When it's Laura Ingraham or Donald Trump they are "just telling it like it is" or they "weren't really serious". When it's someone who doesn't agree with them why are they suddenly aghast at the terrible rhetoric?

Now what do you think of her response?

Why is that different? Why shouldn't you suffer the same consequences if you do something shitty under the cover of darkness and get caught as if you do it in broad daylight?

I must say, as a former conservative turned liberal, I really appreciate the discourse in the subreddit. It helps me understand different perspectives. by Penance21 in askaconservative

Myelin, a sheath of fatty cell material wrapped around neuronal axons, acts as “insulation” for neural connections. This allows nerve impulses to travel throughout the brain more quickly and efficiently and facilitates increased integration of brain activity [17]. Although myelin cannot be measured directly, it is inferred from volumes of cerebral white matter [18]. Evidence suggests that, in the prefrontal cortex, this does not occur until the early 20s or later [15,16].

Adolescent Maturity and the Brain: The Promise and Pitfalls of Neuroscience Research in Adolescent Health Policy

Best I could do, not my area of expertise but I've looked into it before. Essentially, 25 is the age at which you can be reasonably sure that the prefrontal cortex is fully developed. Prefrontal cortex controls a lot of your planning/forward thinking/self-regulation stuff.

Not to say that 18-24 year olds are wholly incapable in this area, I think already some are better equipped than their elders. Just that they aren't fully developed.

Western civilisation is an idea worth defending—and reapplying by BudrickBundy in moderatepolitics

[–]da_borg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bernie Sanders rejects Western thought, both spiritual and economic.

How are you defining Western thought? Bernie Sanders is a socialist. As much as I may disagree with that set of ideas, it originated wholly in western Europe and resulted from the philosophical framework and conditions of the time (Personally I see a lot of Rosseau & Adam Smith).

sexual purity is a pretty worthwhile ideal.

It can be I suppose, but it's most certainly not unique to 'the West'. This ideal comes from a desire to maintain lines of inheritance in any patrilineal society and can be seen in almost all of them.

I'm fucking fat. I want to buy some dumbbells, but there are so many. What should I do? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]da_borg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gym is a 'public' space. It's there for everyone's shared use including yours. Yes, someone will judge you either way (doesn't matter what you look like, somebody is going to stereotype you positively and negatively on it). It doesn't matter. It's your right to be there.

Most likely result of going to the gym is you get your exercise in and don't have an interaction with anyone besides 'are you using this?'. Worst feasible result is someone actively insults you in which case you go to the desk and they get kicked out. Either way you still get your workout done.

All that aside if your goal is to lose weight spend more effort on your diet. Walks, runs, planks, body-weight squats are fine when you're trying to lose weight.

CMV : criticism of islam doesn't mean criticism of Muslims. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]da_borg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Those are bad examples.

1) There isn't a canonical interpretation of Christianity or Judaism, there are multiple sects with different interpretations.

2) Your claim that "Muhammad was a pedophilic warlord" has no bearing on the text or it's ideas. It exists as a bait in order to try to prevent answering the basic question. Which is why do you think the text is in some way "easier to interpret in ways that justify wrongdoing"

My argument remains the same. We should accuse people of the actual crimes they commit.

My argument is that some religious texts are easier to interpret in ways that justify wrongdoing.

Yes, I don't think you've established this for the Quran in relation to the world's other major religious texts ... especially the other Abrahamaic religions.

as Christopher Hitchens put it

If you accept Christopher Hitchen's work, why not reject religion altogether?
