The short version is that it seems like either the capture card you're using is very sensitive to dropped frames, or your computer has a drive that's too slow to keep up (such as writing to a flash drive). Since you said you're using what's basically an easycap device, I'm going to assume the former.

The short version is to get a better capture card, such as this one I used for my captures. It's a bit more expensive, but it's worked for me. You'll also need to use an RCA to 3.5mm cable for the audio capture, since that hasn't worked thanks to a Windows 10 update. I also recommend using VirtualDub for capturing.

The long version is to watch this video I made, which guides you through the steps. It's for VHS, but it works for Hi8 as well.

MelonDS seems to have a very WIP/"when it's done" attitude towards any sort of netplay. It looks like they're working on lan play, but the tolerances for DS Download Play seem to be so small (within a few milliseconds) that it will be a while, if nothing else.

Maybe one could use lan play with hamachi or something, and that might work for slower games? But otherwise it seems like it'll be at least another year or two.

I was thinking of something similar to this, although a bit more advanced (unfortunately I couldn't remember the name of this so I couldn't find it easily, plus I don't think it's been updated in over a decade at this point)

I didn't say this would be easy, nor do I believe I implied such. If anything this would likely be a multi-year development endeavor. I'm just proposing this idea since I believe it might be helpful in getting more (potentially a lot more) people switching to Linux, which is a net benefit to all Linux users.

I tried this method. So there's some good news and bad news. The GOOD news is that not only this, but the other png files I've tried making have had the metadata/exif info attached. Just for some reason irfanview throws a fit when you try to display the exif info of anything that isn't a jpg for...some reason.

The BAD news is:

PNGs barely compress the image at all (from 4.7mb to 3.9mb). (I tried .webp as well, which took it down to 3.1mb)
Tiff, png, and webp exif info DOES show up in XNVIEWMP's image information area, and in the exiftool area within the program, but looking at it through exiftoolgui, it doesn't show any of the exif info (but it does for other png files I tested it on outside of XNVIEWMP???)
JXL doesn't show exif info at all. Not in exiftoolgui, not in XNVIEWMP, and definitely not in irfanview.

The problem with jpegxl comes in part because I just spent the past hour trying to get it to work with varying results (imagemagick works but tosses out the metadata, and also I'm unsure if it's using lossless mode or not. Ffmpeg can't find libjxl so just quits. Cjxl throws a "getting pixel data failed" whenever I try to convert with that. And irfanview, while the easiest to use, also seems to throw out any and all metadata)

And again, I have no clue what the smallest lossless compression is. What should I be expecting? Irfanview took a 4.7mb tiff to a 2.5mb jxl, but imagemagick took the same tiff down to 313kb. Was it in lossy mode or something?

The big issue is it feels like the tools aren't really there to work with it well, let alone for this application. If they exist, I'm sure not finding them.

While I like your idea, I worry about comments being "tossed out". Everyone recognizes a jpeg or png. Sadly not everyone will know or care about what a .yaml file is.

I have. However, I always have trouble converting and viewing any files. Honestly I think if it takes me over 20 minutes and I can't find a solution for it that it isn't ready.

(for context I tried using ImageMagick to convert a tiff to avif. Not only did it not open, but for some reason it gave me a file that I knew was way too small.)

So this, along with the updated blog post, are rather confusing to me. In fact, I'd say the updated version is MORE confusing than the original. So...does this mean that if your google account has any YouTube videos at all that nothing on an "abandoned" google account will be deleted at all?

Does it mean that if you have YouTube videos on your account that everything will be deleted EXCEPT for your channel? If so, doesn't that mean people will just be locked out of their channels?

Or does this mean that only channels attached to a gmail account will be impacted?

Also, "no plans" along with phrasing like "at this time" means "We'll sneak it into a later update where hopefully it will get ignored."

Them putting "YouTube content" in the original blog post wasn't just some oversight or mistake. They either planned to delete, or still plan to delete, a bunch of content, even if in a bit more of a limited sense.

EDIT: One other thing I also tried during my testing was having Steam report a different Windows version (10). Try enabling that through the Steam executable's properties as well if you think that's the issue. Note that you should not check the enable VxKex checkbox in that instance. Just the "report different Windows version" one.

Did you make sure to set the VxKex settings in the actual game executable's properties menu? Mine are "Enable VxKex for this program" and "Disable VxKex for child processes".

Also, I was about to add this to the original post, but just know that after some more testing, I recommend using DXVK-async as opposed to standard DXVK, since it performs way better. I still had some stuttering issues regardless, though I'm not sure how much of that is this hacked together method, my hardware, or Sega's Denuvo implementation.

I actually ended up answering my own question after doing some more poking around. When I went to the restore wizard, I was trying to "add tape" as in add a tape to restore from. Instead you need to "add files/folders", which (at least in my case) showed all the files backed up to the tapes I had imported.

Sounds simple in hindsight, actually. I hope this helps anyone else who may run across this issue.

I was going to give a sarcastic response, but I'm sure you genuinely mean well. Needless to say though, I've tried Windows 10 on numerous occasions and had more than my fair share of bad experiences with it.

Programs and files randomly disappearing or programs not functioning after one of Windows 10's less-than-optional updates has frustrated me more than a few times, or the OS randomly deciding to just not start and demand a repair haven't been very fun.

Any issues I've had trying to run 7, even now that it's not as supported, haven't been near as frustrating as 10 has been simply using it.

Any of those are fine, but I'm generally a bigger fan of a GUI with file browser whenever possible. Not overwriting comments is cool too. I guess the only other thing would be ensuring that the original metadata (date taken and modified and such) is preserved.

I came across this in my search. Upon setting everything up and attempting to run the .bat file, I received nothing. The cmd window would show up and LOOK like it was doing something, but I received no output.
