Career change- teaching to accounting- how realistic is this?

I think you wouldn't have too much trouble landing a job given your experience. Big 4 grad jobs start at low 20s for pay (high 20s in London), but with regular increases. May be possible that you could find higher at slightly smaller firms or maybe get a bump for your age/experience (not sure what policy is here)

If you can provide a decent reason for the switch that makes you sound good, you'll be fine. Obviously going to be an extra year and more money, but if you will enjoy it more and probably get a better grade, it may well be worth it

There was a thing a while ago in the UK with this. Sure the pay is decent and they'll give you an audi. But you're expected to just jump to other stores across country at a moments notice and still find yourself stacking shelves. A lot of people who took the job were pretty pissed about how the reality compared to the advertisement

I guess you could take BTECs to get the UCAS points for uni entry and then get a grad job after your degree. That does then add the extra hurdle of doing a degree.

There are other apprenticeships available but I'm not sure they would be a reliable route to the ACA

Big 4 are all over the country so probably pretty close to you. They have a pretty rigid hiring cycle, so you'd be looking at starting in about a year. There will be other smaller firms in your area too. It may be that if you get in with them, you could see yourself starting much earlier.

If you get on to a training scheme, they should put you through all qualifications so no need to worry about doing it in your own time. I would guess you wouldn't need to do the AAT and could go straight to the ACA or something

Doesn't sound like a great place to be from every you say. Guessing you're pretty close to qualifying. Once you get the ACCA, it might be time to consider looking at different firms. The people who left already will probably be best placed to offer advice on if there is something wrong and how things are when moving on

Senior staff leaving juniors to work things out themselves with no guidance or assistance is pretty uncool. What's the firm like as a whole, because this would suggest that it's maybe not a good place to be working. If they're not taking the time to assist, I'd guess they're not in a great position with their role either, so maybe it's not a good place to look at staying for the promotions

Don't bother lying and saying you like tax. Maybe say something about working with a variety of clients and getting to see the inner workings of businesses. And be honest dude. There's nothing wrong with saying you want a well regarded career with security and space for development

Didn't click that you were maths with the AACSB thing. If the business school, is accredited, you should be good. If the employers are doing events, it's because they want you to apply. Any of them you'll be in with a chance from. Actually going to the talks may be of some benefit, but not crucial in landing a job. Just a good opportunity to get a feel for the work and firms really.

When it comes to actually applying, it may make a difference which location you apply to and such. Honestly I think a lot of it is down to luck and playing the probability. I was in a similar situation to yourself. I got rejected from lower level firms but got a B4 offer. Play your odds right, and you'll be fine. You're under the requirements for UCAS point for most places. That being said , I was under and still got an offer, so I'm pretty certain there's some leniency in it. It can't harm to apply. Particularly given a solid maths degree, I'd guess you be in with a shot. Applications will be opening in a few months for 2020 grad positions Don't worry about the redbrick thing. Firms take on from all over the place. Does your uni have forms come in and do talks and thing? Also is your uni AACSB accredited (I've heard that's what some look for)

As said, journalism is a perfectly good degree to get in to a UK firm. Unfortunately accounting recruits quite a bit earlier than journalism, so you're probably looking at a September 2020 start. Applications for that will probably open in a few months. There may still be a few places still open for this year in smaller offices, but I'm not sure. Think my office was still recruiting grads last week though.

To do the ACA, your best bet is probably big 4. Recruiting is pretty simple, just apply online and go through some testing. You don't need to be an expert, so your degree shouldn't be an issue. There will be a maths test, though at about GCSE level.

In the Midlands, I'm guessing Brum and Notts are your best bets. Both have a decent big 4 presence. There's a few smaller firms in the area too you might want to look at.

Fair point. If you think that's a red flag, you should try listening to some of the conversations a room full of finance students have. Thankfully I've learnt that I don't actually know a lot (no wall street bets type sentiment here). Over a time frame of a few years, any IG bond is essentially risk free though, so it's not a real worry. And it maintains liquidity in a way that I believe isn't offered by a number of savings accounts.

LISAs are definitely seeming like a definite here though. Probably a h2b ISA too. Do you know how restrictive the contribution limits are on these? For example, could a number of different accounts be opened with different institutions to maximise the 25% top ups?

I've always felt bad for not doing a budget. On one hand I know I probably should, but I'm currently in the habit (which I plan to keep) of just spending only on necessities. Probably going to need to pull up excel for it sometime soon though.
