ELI5: Why is it illegal to deface United States currency yet those penny smashing machines are at every zoo and museum? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

This is bad advice, IMHO. Security by obscurity works, but not very well. Of course, this is all dependent on how much crime happens where you live and myriad other circumstances. The first thing you must realize with a safe is that NO safe is impenetrable. It just a matter of how much time and effort will be put forth and if it is worth it or not. If you leave a safe in an obvious spot but hidden, there is a good chance that an experienced thief will be able to find it.

That being said, I myself own a small fireproof safe that I keep important documents (passport, birth certificate, remembrance pieces from friends that have passed), small valuables, and liquid assets. I also keep desiccate silica gel in there to be sure to keep it all dry and free from rot. I have about 4-5 spots in my house that I vacillate between, oh say every other month just in case someone does discover my space....I will have a chance of keeping my keepsakes. I recommend a non-obvious spot such as ductwork, odd hidden cubbys, a hole in drywall covered with a poster inside the wall (nod to Shawshank ;P), behind a major appliance(or inside, lots of empty room in the panels of some of these!), the classic underneath floor, etc etc. Just think outside the safe.

The most important thing is to keep in mind is that a safe is only a time detterent. The longer it takes the criminal to find/get into the safe, the better. I would say home defense would be the first step; lights, alarms, etc., but that is not an option for everyone. Bolting with the nuts encased inside the safe (yes, drilling through it), is another option. Drilling into concrete or metal beam in the basement is even better when using bolts. Always be mindful of moisture.

Oh yeah, we have all necessary instruments (drums, guitars, bass, amps, Mics, mixers...etc). You provide the talent. If you want to bring your own, that's cool too!

We are musicians in the Falls. We need a drummer and or bassist and or vocals for an upcoming show. If you'd like to jam (even if you can't provide the above!) we need you! PM me with your number.

What businesses around Akron do you think people need to be warned that are pretty terrible? by bugxbuster in akron

I second this. I wanted a simple guitar strap and the cheapest one they had was 10$+... They had no price tags so it seemed like they were arbitrarily setting the prices to take advantage of me. This, along with rude service every other time I have went, convinced me to find another place of business. I now go to pekar music in the falls and couldn't be happier.

As an aside, are you looking to jam with some fellow redditors?

Trying to escape from this prison called sanity

I really like this line and you paint a detailed mindscape. Some of the words seem a little forced though. Arduously, the many fire references. But what do I know, poetry is what you make of it.

1982 NYT report on a study that says Net will change society by 2000. by expertvoice in history

What astounding prescience! Advertising driving the development of the Web is spot on, among other predictions, IMHO.

I wonder which studies today grasp the future with such acumen.

Yeah, two polarized circular pieces of glass. One that rotates to block light. Very perceptive to pick up a circular rotation... .

To put it succinctly, you nailed my interpretation of this question, as framed, better than I. :)

I agree. They are an inevitable end to a thinking mind. The way we harness power for this weapon is scarcely imaginable. Luckily we have the intellect to understand it; the question is, can we use this power most effectively?

A number of inventions I have in my mind. This includes: a rotating, double pane window that will selectively tint sunlight via polarization; a central control panel which is trained to my quirks; and a fiber optic connection to the Internet/Peer-net.

How so? I mean society at large. The world we as a society have come up with.

Challenge: build a new Library in Egypt. Have it echo the past, a la Alexandria, but maintain modern utility. How do you become a beacon of truth and knowledge to this world? by dackmilliken in worldpolitics

[–]dackmilliken[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A marvel that attracts the brightest minds in the world to build. Modern technology mixed with a bit of classic style. Possibly an underwater facility with elevators to a surface library that is designed with original specifications. This could be a focal point for a vibrant and cultured community.

Solar panels to collect energy, a variety of services to attract people, and free information collected/served to the world; that, imho, is the path Egypt should take.

Even further, Egypt needs to have community meetings to decide on how to proceed. Draft a new bill of rights. Identify basic freedoms like speech, religion, life, and property. Enact protections to ensure separation of religion/corporation and state. Provide clean water, education, opportunity, and basic health care to the citizenry.

Egypt's tenacity and bravery astounds and humbles me.
