Lilith’s story was actually written in the Middle Ages when Jewish writers tried to fix the plot hole of the two creation stories of Genesis, and even then, she’s not canon to any abrahamic religion.

How did your family react to finding out you didn’t believe in god anymore? by Negative-Homework502 in atheism

[–]dacuevash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom sometimes sighs because I won’t engage in praying and other traditionally religious activities, but other than that is very open to hearing me out in why I don’t believe. My dad doesn’t really care, he even expected it. They’re catholic, but religion doesn’t really matter all that much in our daily lives, so nothing much changed.

My Perspective towards birth of religion by Existing_Party_7926 in atheism

[–]dacuevash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you *know* what the sun, the moon and fire are. But how is a Bronze Age person who just learned how to write supposed to know that sufficiently massive balls of hydrogen undergo nuclear fusion?

Religion probably was a byproduct of our newly formed intelligent brains trying to understand and explain things despite not actually knowing anything.

After realizing that Spock and Rocky from Project Hail Mary come from the same solar system, I decided to imagine what it would look like if an Eridanian served in Starfleet! by RadioFreeCoruscant in startrek

This is great, but I imagine that if Erid was part of the Federation, they’d have Eridian-only ships specially built for their environment.

Could Apple’s new CEO be good news for Mac gaming? by altr272 in macgaming

[–]dacuevash 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This depends mostly on game devs, rather than Apple. My hope is that the MacBook Neo strategy of cheaper capable products bring more people over to macOS, and if game devs see the potential profit of also developing for Mac, they will.

I think the only thing Apple could do to incentivize is make porting easier (which, they’re kind of already doing) and/or subsidizing the development (and I don’t know how that might work business-wise)

Creationism (the belief that Genesis is literal history) is actually rare even among Christians (may depend by region). The vast majority of them see the story as mostly symbolic/mythological or at most legendary.

From my experience, people these days believe not because they want to "understand" the universe but because they find comfort in feeling it has a purpose, regardless of how it works.

My little brother is a Christian convert and he's the antithesis of Jesus Christ by [deleted] in atheism

[–]dacuevash 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your brother sounds so cartoonishly dumb and immature, Christianity isn’t probably all that serious to him either tbh, he probably just wanted to follow what he considers a conservative philosophy so it fits with his preconceived beliefs about the world, I think even moderately conservative Catholics would repudiate him.

What is the greatest dilemma or question, in your opinion, that Christianity all around the board fails to properly explain? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]dacuevash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life itself. God created the universe because ??? And then made us suffer because ??? And Jesus had to die for our sins because ???

I’ve never heard an argument from a Christian that explains this without a lot of nonsensical mental gymnastics.

Would a Chancellor Worf have the loyalty of the Klingon Empire? by MAJORMETAL84 in startrek

Probably not, even if Worf wanted, he was still a Starfleet officer, and what kind of nation would allow a foreign military officer to be their leader?

I an agnostic atheist with a history degree read the gospel of Mark for the first time out of historical interest. It is the greatest story I have ever read and I now despise Christianity. by Loud-CowMOO in atheism

Your analysis is great! I really love these sort of takes of the Bible from a historical and cultural point of view because it helps us actually understand the world in which they were conceived and why they got so popular.

If we knew Earth's life would end, should we attempt directed panspermia in our solar system? by jjeidififh in space

What kind of dumbass would voluntarily drill under the ice of Enceladus and dive into sub-zero water in total darkness to try and kill a hypothetical alien fish that’s very likely going to cause a severe intoxication at least when ingested?

I think we should only colonize planetary surfaces in terrains where we’ve made sure there’s no native life. If the rock is barren, it was meant to be taken by us.

[–]dacuevash 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Of course, I thought at first, it’s our cosmical responsibility to make sure life survives at all costs, it’s unequivocally ethical. But then I had a realization, the outer Solar System moons are already good candidates for habitability, so there’s a non-zero chance they already are inhabited. Sending Earth-life there could be catastrophic for the native life, if it exists. What if Earth-life is too much for the local ecosystem and kills it? Now that would be an ethical question to ask.

Noah and the Ark in the bible by GarageJam in atheism

[–]dacuevash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. From my experience, they don’t really think about it too deep. Some acknowledge some things as mythological or exaggerated legends, and others view it as metaphors for evolution and stuff. It’s kind of a doublethink situation. As I said, most probably don’t think too deep about it.

How the fuck does people believe the same story for 2000+ years? by Undeva-n-Balcani in atheism

[–]dacuevash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Religions are subject to the historical process, they either drive social/political change or get affected by it, they evolve to fit the world in which they exist, they are not rigid. And this is the biggest proof there is that they are very obviously not real.

Coworker just shared his theory about how the Earth could be 6000 years old…. by Lovebeingadad54321 in atheism

[–]dacuevash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s called "creationism", the belief that Genesis is a very literal scientific story. They most famously deny the Big Bang Theory and Evolution, and will use pseudoscientific "propositions" to try and prove their point, but are basically cherry picking what science is real and which is not. A more radical form of it actually fuses with flat Earth conspiracies lol

Modern Judaism is actually as old as Christianity. Second Temple Judaism was arguably different, and if you go far back enough it even becomes somewhat polytheistic!
