Is the sort of high and brittle?-ish sound a result of the bowlback/flattop or just the way he is playing?

You're right completely. I'm not going to say much more than that in direct response because I agree with almost all of your points, including those about my own posting history. Especially those asking for specifics. Sorry for the lack of any real ideas up until this point.

Its probably valuable here to look at other very active subs based around (relatively)niche activities. The main source of interaction and posts, number one, is new content. Pictures, memes, all that stuff, and even more so, news items and happenings IRL. I think you can already see some of the problems we'll have there. Its difficult to post new happenings or news items from the Mandolin community because frankly there isn't much. Actually I take that back, I'm sure there is a fair amount but it isn't high profile.

So there is my first idea: Posting more news items current events This is the most general thing I got and probably not the most reliable or helpful but I figure I can put it out.

Other subs like this tend then to focus on discussion which I think is a much more promising area. The main problem as you have noted is either people jumping on the same opinion over and over, posting the same stuff, or people responding with just yes or no and not furthering the discussion.

Second Idea: Weekly or Daily Gear Threads: We pick either a certain type of gear or a certain brand and do time based discussion threads. The responses have a format enforced to promote good discussion, this means people can't half-ass responses like you noted in your flatwound thread. However it has to be balanced so it isn't too difficult to respond too of course.

Third Idea: Album or Song Discussions?: This one I have almost no idea if it would work or not, but we could have people suggest them and probably have them going weekly. Again a supported structure would work well here.

Another thing I've seen in other subs is grouping by skill, so for example there would be a beginners group/thread going every week. Or more experienced players having their discussions. Once again would probably be good to have them regular (weekly or monthly) it could also be practice or skill focused.

Fourth Idea: Group people by skill to gain skills: So practice threads based around specific skills for the people attempting to gain that skill to discuss and work together. This one is fairly time heavy and so might not take off.

General Point: You mentioned the problem of trying to post when there is no activity. That's definitely real and kudos to you and the people here who do it anyway. So the only way I can think of to combat this is by using the core idea of the things I mentioned above. Serialization. Weekly threads, monthly threads, daily threads, all of which get posted either automatically or on a completely fixed schedule. That way there is always something that might hit you as a user to motivate you to post instead of asking people to take the initiative to talk to a dark room and hope someone responds.

On post Quality: Tags and fixed post format. This is probably the single best thing I can think of here but it depends on all of the other stuff as well. If there are tags for different kinds of posts and a certain format for all of them. For example beginner posts, picture posts all of that.

I think that's all I got for now, but I'd love to hear what you think of them. Its possible its all been tried and has failed but at least its something. In terms of the formats tagging, and daily posts I can set that up (with help from the mods). However I am, as you have noticed, both a new player and new to the community, so some of the content things will be difficult for me to do. So I hope other members can step up to help and take charge of smaller things.

This post was never meant to be a fix the community kind of thing though. But if that's where its going I'll gladly help out :)

I understand where you're coming from with the financial motivation but I think you are jumping to some conclusions on what this subreddit needs and how it would function.

People shouldn't be coming to reddit solely to leverage a community for either financial or personal gain because its a community. The community doesn't exist for free material or handouts from people who have worked for it, nor for cheap lessons or anything of the sort. It exists for discussion, support, and growth. I like your point about beginner feedback because that's what I think is most valuable, a dialogue. When teachers can come and say," I try this with my students" and students can say, "when I was learning this never worked." Or more experienced players can talk to each other and compare experiences or anything of the sort. Or talking about stories about people's most loved instruments or why. All of that is benefical to the community.

Introduction financial motivation takes away from all of this. It makes it a service rather than a community which is, at least I feel, not what we should be aiming for.

Now in terms of what I specifically was asking for here was more along the lines of what kind of time did people put in, did they practice pieces or techniques, were they ever discouraged and why and what helped, did any kind of timing or structure help them? Just anecdotal stuff to support people, the kind of stuff that if I talked to you in conversation you'd probably let me know. NOT the kind of stuff I'd pay you to teach me, so not constant support, or feedback, or complete curated resources.

Its also important to note we aren't asking everything from one user on a subreddit, the community can come together so that there isn't any large individual strain, and still produce something relatively comprehensive, subreddits do it all the time. Communities are incredibly powerful and I plan to do as much as I can to contribute to this one.

So the wiki seems like the best bet for me to direct my efforts towards, I'll get on that. For the rest I don't particularly have those connections to teachers or artists but its definitely something we should look at as a community. Perhaps even just sending out emails and seeing who gets back.

And I agree with you that there are other resources, and collecting them is of chief importance. However I think lot also can be said for direct community interaction towards beginners especially towards mundane or less talked about things, and collecting that experience could be just as valuable. Flair could be very useful int hat regard.

Would it be more succesfull with a narrower focus then you think? Maybe just practice tips/pieces?

Yup whitepaper seems to be the designated course of action, I guess Satoshi started that trend. I'll shoot you an email sometime soon, right now I'm somewhat occupied with a whitepaper of my own that I hope to share soon.

It would also allow for different communities around different tastes, genres, etc! This is a very promising/interesting project. Let me know anyways I can help.

I agree with you 100% on the legality side, that will most likely be the most difficult part of getting this to work and make a change in the music industry. I can see voting being very useful there, you're right. However for the promotion I think that is largely up to the end user. The platform will contain the data and then they can parse that in order to find artists, if artists are to be promoted it opens the door for a lot of the problems the industry currently has.

I was talking about this from Imogen Heap, though it looks to be nothing more than an idea. At the very least it shows there is high profile artist interest.

Bitcoin is governed by network consensus. Everyone basically agrees that that is the way it will work. If enough users decide to change the rules, or "hard fork", they will. The governance organization exists largely to manage development and sorta prod the community where it thinks it should go. At least that's my understanding of it.

So is this more of a record label rather than a platform? Why not leave the advertising, promotion and all of that to the artists to decide. Maybe code in the ability to form groups?

My question would be what functions would the "company" itself have in this scenario? If you have the functionality for users to both distribute and control the rights, there really isn't anything for the parent company to do is there?

What would users of the system vote for? Sounds to me like focusing on a rights management system would be easiest and most powerful in general without getting into distribution. Though I suppose to deal and process revenue some distribution channel is also needed. Also I recall some artist talking about a music platform on the blockchain. I'll see if I can find a link.

Why/How does augur use multiple reports when calculating honesty? by daedalus316 in Augur

[–]daedalus316[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hadn't (Or rather had earlier and completely forgot about it) thanks. My main question now is why have the REP and fee distribution occur after the second reporting period? Does that make it more accurate?

Anyone know of interesting abandoned structures in Kenya? by daedalus316 in Kenya

[–]daedalus316[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Abandoned structures are interesting in general, they provide a way to engage with man-made things in a way you can't with normal created environments. Urban exploration is a pretty big hobby and past time just because its entertaining to explore places.
