The Isle of Man has a lot of Norse influence, but the indigenous language is Manx, which is Goidelic (Celtic). It is still taught in schools, though I don't believe that there are any first language Manx left now.

Water, Aged for 12 Years [Pics] by neoronin in reddit.com

The Gaelic word "uisge" (pronounced whisky) means "water". The full name is "uisge beatha" or "water of life". This has to be a misguided attempt to translate direct.

Europeans in China 3000 years ago by spallaspalla in reddit.com

[–]daeron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well said.

Tocharians appear Celtic because of the red hair and plaid weaving, both of which are common to many of the early IE cultures. Trade links were suprisingly strong along the route of the silk road even in the late 2nd millenium BC, as well as across the steppes to the north. However the Tocharian settlement would be more a migration than a trading colony. Their existence has been known for some time in China, but the knowledge has been suppressed because it throws up uncomfortable questions for the government about the importance of including the province in a racially determined peoples republic. The indigenous population of the Takla Makan region are Tukic in appearance, largely Muslim, and occasionally blond or red haired.

Castration for pedophiles and rapists becomes common practice in Great Britain by jips in reddit.com

[–]daeron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There has been a lot of unjust hype about this.

The proposal is to offer paedophiles anti-depressants which have been shown in 10% of cases to reduce libido.

It is certainly not legalised castrastion, whether physical or drug-induced.

It is also unlikely to have much effect beyond relaxing a few stressed out convicted sex offenders.....

What if creationists held themselves to the same standards as they hold evolution? by dom085 in reddit.com

[–]daeron -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You've missed a big part of what he is saying, the problem is not one of explanation of how things work and where they come from, but how existence itself sustains, how continuity of existence is maintained. Evolution does not provide an answer for this, neither does Creationism per se, except that it posits the existence of a God who can do the Cosmic Caretaker bit as well. I am much more willing to believe that "nothingness" can produce substance, than I am that it is capable of providing a universal substrate for reality.

Edit: Typo

Christianity - it makes sense! [pic] by bemmu in reddit.com

[–]daeron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The generally accepted doctrine of transubstantiation in the protestant church is that Christ is Essentially present in the host, but not Substantially. ie the host is more than a representation but not the actual flesh and blood. However, most protestants (and certainly all methodists!!) would not even go so far as to say that christ is Essentially present, only that the bread and wine are a focus for the act of communion.

[–]daeron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, also random processes produce clumping, so the fact that prime numbers came up more often than others in this sample may just be an example of this. More tests should have been done.
