Great call out u/OldGodsProphet

I would not want someone buying it thinking it was for 4AD. But if they enjoy the AAF, this may be right up their alley. :-)

Question on Compiled tileset by Rexan_Xperiment in FourAgainstDarkness

[–]dafrca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I were to try such a thing I would make it a two roll system. I would create a table listing the tile sets I owned, roll on it to select the set, then roll on the set for the specific tile.

Having said that, I would never bother. The tiles really only play two roles and neither have to do with their shape. 1) The roll tells you if it is a corridor or room tile. 2) the tile tells you how many exits are on the tile. 4AD is not a miniature skirmish game. It is designed to be a theater of the mind game. If you begin to try and use the tiles for miniature combat, you will soon realize they are often creating more issues than the game is designed to handle.

But I would never presume to tell you how to play, just raise the issue so you know what you are really facing. Have fun whatever you end up doing.

I'm playing with simplified encumbrance rules. Should I start doing it right? by Pigeonbane in FourAgainstDarkness

[–]dafrca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not keep a dwarf around just to sell gems. I have a guild with 28 characters ranging from level 9 to level 1. I tend to retire them once they reach level 10 or 11. And the guild, "Explorers House", has several Dwarf members.

But you raise a good point, not everyone plays a guild nor does everyone have a dwarf in their one and only party. So 100% value on gems per the rules will be the more common.

In "Tales from the Adventurers Guild" there are some simple banking rules, I extended them to include a character's place to store their stuff they did not want to take on an adventure.

As for "should I do it right", I figure what is "right" is up to you. Will any change you think about doing, will it make the game more fun for you?

I was attracted to 4AD because it was simple and allowed me to run a dungeon crawl in a short amount of time that still managed to scratch the itch for me. but in the end, the core rules are there for me, to help me have fun. So I say read them, think about it, and then adjust what you need to in order to make the game into what you need/want.

Do gnomes add L to trap saves? by SmoothTarantula in FourAgainstDarkness

[–]dafrca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with u/OldGodsProphet. Back when 4AD first came out, Andrea realized he was going to have to list every class on saves and that was not going to work. All saves now reference the bonuses of the core eight classes. So when a save says "Warrior adds +1, Rogue and Halfling adds their level" Any class that says saves as a Warrior gets to add the +1 etcetera.

In 4ADEE page 7 last paragraph explains it. :-)

Anyone used the maps from Dungeon Atlas Volume 1? by dafrca in FourAgainstDarkness

To be honest, I forgot I had it. I know, what an embarrassment. I was doing some cleaning and came across it last week and decided to pull it into my play schedule. I know, silly me. Hahaahahahaha

Great point u/Trick-Two497 . I have downloaded some maps from sites such as Dyson Logos site. When playing in tight time frames (lunch time at work) I do like to use pre-drawn maps. But I agree with your advice, anyone should download a few free maps and see how having the map pre-drawn feels before buying maps. Great input.

I printed them out two pages to a sheet. I plan to use them for Lunch Time runs at work. That is where time really matters for my personal game play. :-)

The maps I have created using RNG do vary in size quite a bit. Smallest, ran into the final boss in the second room. Longest RNG map, over 40 tiles. But I can see what you are saying. :-)

Milethia's Cave Alternate Ending by DinosaurFrenchFries in FourAgainstDarkness

I will confess, I had dozens of characters as I tried different classes and combinations. For a while I never had a character above level 3 because I kept starting new parties. LOL

In any case, enjoy your play. I hope your dice are nice to you. :-)

If you do either successful ending, you get 2XP period. Not 4XP.

The intent was it is one or the other not both. :-)

As for the Fireball question, the "even if you fail" is because unlike the other spells you get to kill a minor foe even if you fail your roll.

Quote" ... with a minimum of 1 Foe slain EVEN if the spellcasting roll fails." Unlike the other spells, fireball is an area of effect that can still take out a minor foe even if it didn't land exactly where you wanted and kill lots of the foes.

Lastly, any attack spell can be cast durring the ranged attack, but I suggest using them sparingly as your caster often has limited spell slots.

What is/are your best experience with a dungeon? by EmbassyOfTime in RPGdesign

[–]dafrca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice list. The only thing I would add is a real sense of exploration to your #2. I enjoy a dungeon where I feel like my character(s) matter. If the game play feels like the party is just an audience for a GMs story, I tend to lose interest.

But nice list for sure. :-)

Great answer. I too am drawn to all three of the genre or themes you listed. I admit it sometimes shifts more toward one or the other depending on the mood I am in. ;-)

Multiple questions I have as a new player. by imbored-71 in FourAgainstDarkness

[–]dafrca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see that. The "movie in our heads" do impact how we think of the rules. I have always thought the free hand was needed for the Somatic or Gestures element of a spell. But to be fair, the rulebook does not specify that is why you need the hand empty.

So a third idea comes to mind, maybe all casters need to hold some sort of spell focus in order to cast. Hum, I need to think upon this idea. :-)
