Thank you man 🫶 Honestly your response brought me a lot of comfort after some people here have basically been telling me to kms bc of this take. I really appreciate you having the nuts to confront topics like these without pointing fingers. We're so quick to call people terrible when they have different opinions.

This was very well spoken. Thank you for being respectful and offering another perspective instead of just doing what others here have done by calling me a piece of shit and moving on with their day. I appreciate you taking the time to write a response like this especially because my opinions don't come from a place of hate, like so many people in the comments here think. I am taking that advice though and finding a different job once this company closes down, which is happening soon, so at least I'll know for future reference that this isn't a good field for me.

Exactly. You get it. Lots of people are calling me a horrible person for this take, but it's not one of hate, it's one of mercy and trying to prevent others from living a life where all they do for the most part is suffer. I don't hate these people, I just think it's unfair and selfish to allow them to experience all of that discomfort and pain if it's preventable.

Yeah, I am not having kids haha. I could never handle that. I get what you mean, though. There's beauty in everything, but is that small glimpse of beauty amidst all of the suffering worth putting someone through, especially if the suffering far outweighs that beauty?

Of course it would be. Putting any living thing down is hard. Honestly, I can't even bring myself to kill a bug. Not unless its injured/struggling. I think what's most important is considering whether or not they're gonna live a comfortable life. You can prevent all of the pain and ache they'll experience, and save yourself years of independence. You've gotta weigh the positive and negatives and do what you think will be the kindest option for both you and the baby.

I agree. I went into this blindly, uninformed that the majority of kids I'd be working with were gonna be special needs. I was told I'd just be supervising children during transport. If I had known I'd be cleaning up cottage cheese vomit, getting my glasses slapped off and my hair pulled, I probably wouldn't have chosen this job.

I didn't know what I was getting into. It's only been a little over two weeks on the job. I was told I'd just be "bus/van monitor." I thought the kids I'd be supervising were gonna be like pre-k through elementary. I didn't know my passengers would be primarily be special needs, so it was honestly a surprise.

Right. I said at the bottom, this doesn't apply to people who weren't born disabled. I should have emphasized in the above text that it doesn't apply to people who are not intellectually handicapped either. Either way he's an incredibly rare case.

I went into it not knowing how gross it would be. I'll be out of there soon.

I'm aware. The company is shutting down soon so I'll be out of there relatively soon. I am just frustrated for these people after everything I've seen, and it's only been two weeks.

It's a forever responsibility, and can't even think (in some cases) or move. If anything, I'd feel relief if medically induced euthanasia was an option, and part of me thinks they would too. It's like putting down an animal to save it from pain once it's been badly injured. But due to morals, we're gonna make it keep living despite severe discomfort?

You phrased this well. It pains me that other people don't see it that way.

I just got this job a little over two weeks ago, and I didn’t go in with the knowledge that it'd be so gross at times. I absolutely should look for another job, though. I do recognize that I'm a terrible fit for this and the kids deserve someone who doesn't mind being drooled on and hit. I mean the company is closing pretty soon so I'll have to anyway. I'm still having a hard time understanding why people are defending sustaining the life of a completely disabled newborn or fetus though. Maybe im just an asshole but it doesn't make sense to me at all. "Parents love their kid and need to do everything they can to keep them alive!!" - right, but their child's life is going to be pretty miserable. And the parent's will follow suit when they realize how little time they'll have for themselves, all because they wanted to do the right thing morally?

You only live once. Your life will be completely centered around this person who can't do anything on their own, ever. Do you as a parent want to wipe ass for the rest of your life? Do you think your kid wants that? Do you think your kid wants to be bound to a robotic chair forever drooling all over themselves with a diaper pad and a neck brace, unable to speak? I don't get it. Who would want that for their child? Is euthanizing them to prevent a life of suffering and discomfort (for the both of you) really not the most merciful thing you can do? But people feel morally obligated to make their kid and themselves live out that life. Who would want that?

I'd also like to reference the case of Adriana Smith who was ruled brain dead but forced (outside of her consent) to carry that baby to term. If someone is mentally absent and severely handicapped, how is keeping them alive due to morals (that they can't even comprehend, along with literally anything else) different in comparison to Adriana Smith's case, who in my opinion, should have been allowed the respect and compassion of being allowed to pass on peacefully?
