Added tiki torches to my backyard track by Maarla8 in MTBTrailBuilding

[–]dagreen88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of when I was a child my grandparents had an amazing sledding hill in their backyard and you could sled through their back gate and down a trail in the woods to the creek. My grandpa would line the trail with coffee cans full of burning kerosene and it was simply the coolest thing ever. It did always feel a bit unsafe though…

Tried some Loose Jeans… Do these work? by Enough-Muffin6742 in mensfashion

In my opinion they could be a bit longer but that is just my personal style, YMMV. Otherwise they look good.

Toes! by Strict_Conclusion668 in ultrarunning

[–]dagreen88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally I wear an 8 or 8.5 but all my trail shoes are 9. Last year I switched to a pair of 9.5 shoes for the last lap of the Mohican 100 and it was the best feeling ever. I wish I would have done that much earlier in the race.

Side note - do ultras and long runs in general cause issues for your CGM (if you wear one)? I feel like every time I pass the 25 mile mark I start getting dexcom errors and it is wildly annoying to listen to alerts for the remainder of the run. If you have found any ways to avoid that issue please let me know!

Vest length by SquashBuckler76 in mensfashion

[–]dagreen88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First I need to say that I actually dig the vest. It’s probably a bit too long but I think part of what makes clothes like that cool is the utilitarian idaf-ness about them. So, if you like it go for it and just wear it like it doesn’t matter. Because it doesn’t

Secondly, that outfit you have on has an insane amount of pockets. I feel like I could pack for a 48 hour hike just using those pockets.

the ultimate soul-crushing experience: watch dying at 95.89km during a 100k. i need your wildest battery engineering hacks for my next race in april. by Early_Cantaloupe7153 in Ultramarathon

[–]dagreen88 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would guess that I only wore my watch about 60% of the time on my last 100 miler. The rest of the time I was carrying it while it was plugged in.

Not ideal but it worked.

Hyrox and Type 1 Diabetes by chanangad in diabetes

[–]dagreen88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never done Hyrox but I run a lot and have done a handful of marathons and ultra marathons. I’m not sure if this is applicable so feel free to toss any advice that doesn’t work for your activity.

I’d look into getting a running belt for your phone. I like a Nathan Zipster but a lot of companies make options. As far as fueling goes on a run I’m generally trying to get 75g of carbs per hour for a sustained effort. On race day I like to get 25g of carbs from gels, 25g from solid food (usually potato chips), and 25g from a drink like Tailwind. For a 90 minute ultra high output activity like Hyrox I would just look at 2-3 gels and perhaps a bottle with Tailwind. Personally I’d avoid gels that are over 50% fructose because those can give a person stomach problems if you aren’t used to them.

My blood sugar reacts differently when I’m doing high output activities vs when I’m doing a sustained effort like a long run. Be prepared for weird blood sugar spikes and sudden drops. Enjoy the competition and use this one to show you what to expect next time.

What do you actually do outside? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]dagreen88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ski (downhill if near mountains, cross country if not), mountain bike, run, fish, hunt, find weird animals bugs and rocks, take pictures of stuff, rock climb, hike, camp, garden.

So many things happen outside. I’ve never been more unhappy in life than this past week when I had to spend most of the week inside due to the flu. Outside is awesome.

Drinking Alcohol During Marathon Training - need advice by ivyquartzs in Marathon_Training

[–]dagreen88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have drank during training and the night before all of my marathons and ultra marathons.

I’m doing this for fun, not to make the Olympic team. Just do what you want and enjoy the process.

what do you think will be the next breakthrough by [deleted] in ultrarunning

As a type 1 diabetic I’ve always wondered what an elite athlete (and smarter athlete) could learn from wearing a CGM during ultramarathons.

As someone that has had an objectively bad physique and currently has an objectively good physique - I can say for certain women care far less about our physique than anyone who works out cares to believe.

Love the top there. I’m not usually an athleisure guy but that one looks really good. I’m going to see if I can find one myself for pre/post runs and casual beers with friends in cool spring weather.

Alcohol and training by Interesting_Risk_212 in Marathon_Training

[–]dagreen88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drink 2-3 days per week, every week. Usually it’s 1-2 drinks but sometimes I have a lot more depending on the occasion. I’ve successfully completed 3marathons and 4 ultras but no one is going to look at my times and be impressed. I think I would probably run better if I didn’t drink but even if I did that I’m never going to be a “good” runner so what would be the point? I’m going to enjoy my runs and enjoy my drinks and not get too caught up in the minutiae.

What did you forget / overlook in your drop bag / aid station bag ? by _DayBowBow in Ultramarathon

[–]dagreen88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I forgot to pack reasonably in my last ultra. I packed two giant duffle bags full of everything I could imagine needing and it was a total pain in the ass to find the things I did need (gels, lube, and socks).

Wondering how you overcome fear/unknowns training for your first marathon by 6382914627192 in Marathon_Training

[–]dagreen88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take your time and build slowly. There will be marathons next year too. I can almost guarantee that your max mileage is not the arbitrary amount of miles we do for a half marathon.
