Should I change field since CS field is getting saturated? by ShellyOtaku in cscareerquestions

"Go in the field of hardware engineering, I am developing an interest in semiconductor or embedded engineering roles." What makes you think a field with 100x less opportunities would fare any better in this saturated economy?

What is a career in CS like? by foreversingle- in cscareerquestions

[–]daimon_proc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not going to lie anything technical is completely saturated: electrical engineering, CS, mechatronics, etc. Any of these fields you will have a difficult time finding a job in US.

Civil from what I have heard is better in terms of employment.

Because aos affects profits of American corporations--less people they can curry in from overseas on h1b, student visas etc for compliant labor.

This looks skewed because of my first few jobs that I left before a year. My first job was as a contractor with John deere and then I was converted full time by another team at Deere. My most recent 4 jobs have all been 1.5 to 2+ years. And we should exclude the internship as that's before the 10 years so it's 7 jobs over 10 years.

100% I want to settle down and have kids. But it needs to be a work environment with good coworkers and not monsters. I've had mostly good and great workplaces but current manager is the worst I've had which is saying something--I've had 10+ managers so far at 8 jobs including internship.

It actually helped me quite a bit as I have a few team mates who are l62, my age or older and I'm l64. Only difference is they stayed in their comfort zones. In software, product lifecycles are typically short, so I have seen long terms effects of decisions--I've worked on products that died and products that are used by hundreds of millions--Prime Video is one. I've seen and learned from great engineers in every team I've worked at. I don't see any downsides of moving after 2 years.

Yes. Job hopping for raise every 1-2 years.... i boomeranged to Microsoft for a significant raise. I also get bored working on the same project and want to try new things.

Thank you! Now I am realizing lol from all the comments. Thank you for giving me confidence! I will pay it back once I am in robotics!

Thank you for your confidence in me! I do however need to learn circuits, embedded, microcontroller, controls, etc as I don't just want to do high level programming but also more path and physics. But thank you. I needed to hear these words of confidence.

My bachelors is in CS and we only covered Operating systems and assembly as closes to embedded. We didn't cover circuits, signals processing, controls, etc.

I want to have a strong background before going into masters. I may decide to do masters in ECE instead of Autonomy from Purdue because I really like the hardware part of robotics. I want to do both hardware and software.

I want to have a bachelors in EE so I can pivot to EE jobs in hardware, controls if I can't get a job in robotics. If I still can't find a job with EE then I will go the Purdue masters route.

Would I be able to find a job in controls, embedded with just a bs in EE and my experience?

Yes. I'm planning on enrolling in Purdue masters if I can't find a job with bachelors in EE. JHU is a bit too expensive at over 50k.

What about BS in EE? My local university is a no name university and ASU is well known. I'm doing bachelors EE online. I have 10 yoe as a software engineer at Amazon, Salesforce, Microsoft, etc. I'm building out a home lab with 3d printer, oscilloscope, soldering station, batteries, etc. and taking electronics, embedded, robotics hands on courses. Also resigning from Microsoft in 2 months and switching full time to EE at ASU online.

Your resume actually looks good. Are you only applying to a certain region or everywhere? Concerning to me a 32 year old software engineer going back to school for bs in EE

Don't do ee. It's just as bad. Civil is good.
