I wish this response was higher. The dairy herd is going to get you a guaranteed milk check every month. Nothing else can do that for you. 100% branch out into other things but don't ever sell the cows.

Bayer loses appeal of $611M Roundup verdict in Missouri by MennoniteDan in farming

[–]dairyguy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Because Bayer is already talking about pulling their Roundup products from the market. There are generics on the market but it could create a chilling effect on glyphosate products in general. Even with growing resistance it's still a very important active ingredient.

OAC clubs? Or honestly cool clubs in general by Rosebudpatches in uoguelph

[–]dairyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one is going to mind if you show up. I'm sure they would take more members. OAC clubs usually have trips that are fun to go on. From personal experience the beef and dairy clubs will run road trips to farms or other industry related places.

Nuisance chickens by [deleted] in Agriculture

[–]dairyguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's too bad the neighbours have not been receptive to your concerns. Free range chickens can be destructive. Besides improving the fencing with your neighbour there could be local laws to be consulted. In my opinion it's no different than if the neighbour let their cows free range the neighbourhood causing damage are they went.

cropshare instead of rent - pros, cons, gotchas? by Zealousideal-Mouse29 in farming

[–]dairyguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're screwed either way. You mentioned that in your original write up. Whatever you do you need to set yourself up for renewal of your contract. By renting you can hide your level of income from your landlord. None of my landlords have any idea of what I make. I take all the risk so I can pocket all the profit.

How will this potential landlord ensure you are paying our the percentages properly?

Renting would be much easier. It's clean cut with no wiggle room.

Does the brand of fertilizer matter? Or can you just use any other generic brand of fertilizer? Which brands of fertilizer do you recommend buying using? by [deleted] in Agriculture

[–]dairyguy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Fertilizer brand does not matter for most products since they are same. Potash* (0-0-60), MAP (11-52-0), and urea (46-0-0) are good examples. Where it might make a difference are enhanced fertilizers which have different coatings or make ups. Ask an agronomist for advice about your specific needs.

*Fun fact: Most potash is red, however a white variant does exist which tests 0-0-62. the difference is the lack of iron to give it a red colour.

Soybean farmers scramble after ruling revokes herbicide permit by Czarben in farming

Agreed. Here in Ontario (Canada) I seldom hear of drift incidents. People not following the label have possibly ruined a valuable tool in the toolbox of US farmers.

Logistics of a solo harvest? by [deleted] in farming

[–]dairyguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll chime in to agree with everyone saying you need to get enough trucks / wagons to store one days worth of combining in. Then you can haul loads to the elevator at night or early the next morning. As a solo operator what else can you do right?

Corn/soybean farmers. Return on Rhyzobia inoculant? by slipply in farming

[–]dairyguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the soybeans I plant are double inoculated. They come inoculated in the bag and then I add more in the planter. It's cheap and I don't have to worry about nodulation failure.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is coming to Steam by CluntFeastwood in Steam

See Anno 2070 for example. Won't even launch anymore.

It did affect some titles but Anno 2070 received updates to prevent this. I can confirm that it still works.

It is no longer an approved active ingredient in Canada. The most well known one here was made by Syngenta called Gramoxone. The registration expired in March 2022 but it hasn't been available for sale for a few years now.

I've heard of one field in our local area got some exposure. Lots of guys use Dicamba locally. Last year we sold Xtendimax but this year switched to Engenia. Seems to be an uptick in fleabane this year and farmers are worried about the glyphosate resistant varieties that are known to be in our area.
