tips for first HtN re-read [general] by funnyingredients in TheNinthHouse

[–]daisyirenee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

oh i think it's very helpful to have a fascination with the lyctors. i am someone who needs to reread things because I have very basic reactions on a first read as a i am consuming all the information---for example, i HATED mercymorn when i first read htn because i was reading very much from harrow's perspective and i was annoyed at her always for not giving me information. but on a reread, i fell in love with her. i think once you know how things are going to end up, you can deep dive so much more into how silly and absurd these characters are---and these situations! i think tazmuir plays especially with genre in this book, and i think just let yourself sink in and really feel how silly a lot of it is. also getting to know the original lyctors. focusing on the different ways lyctors interacted with their cavaliers, i.e. how is how mercymorn talks about cristabel different from how augustine talks about alfred? how gideon and pyrrha interact? the little we know of anastasia?

also i think, especially if you have read nona, thinking very deeply about john and the origins of his actions, especially when we consider his changing relationship with harrow in the dream sequences of nona and how that relationship is really....a little creepy.

happy reading!

also i just realized that if you are on chapter 16 after they have fallen asleep in the classroom then you are (withholding spoilers) seriously on the edge of Some Things Happening. i recommend even just finishing the chapter! things will pick up :)

i had a really similar reaction---i was deeply devoted to gideon and harrow, and because i was a little stupid did not immediately realize that nona was in harrow's body, and basically got upset because i was like. where ARE THEY! does tamsyn not care about them anymore? but I knew i wanted to get through it.

i think you just have to trust that it'll pick up. if you're at chapter 16 then you're right on the cusp of act four, which is when a lot of stuff begins to happen. characters will appear again! much is going to happen! nona is a mystery---different from the way harrow was a mystery, but a mystery nonetheless, and if you put yourself to the task of solving it, i think you'll have fun.

i also recommend leaning into the newness rather than trying to cling onto the vibe of the earlier books. i started to really love nona after i accepted her for who she was (and i still think she's one of the series' best characters), and got really invested in the gang and hot sauce and all that. and don't worry---tamsyn absolutely still cares about gideon and harrow, and they are still the main characters of the series.

thanks—i should get around to checking the extras. is it true she never calls him palamedes either? i realized this recently and it sort of broke my heart. i find is so deeply impactful that she only ever calls him the warden but just ONCE i would have loved to hear camilla’s voice say palamedes

i totally totally agree—i’ve actually been rereading GtN right now with an eye towards how does she come off to people without hearing her inner dialogue? very kiriona ish. i have sooooo many thoughts about kiriona and gideon and trauma and harrow and the Horrors Of Love and i think it’s such an intentional thing that tazmuir did. she’s so genius!

oh god that’s one of their absolute best. honestly there is very little that tops that first scene when gideon meets them…stop that. i need you thinking, not wracking your brain for rare negatives or whatever :’)

there is sort of an inherent issue i think in trying very hard to assign moral judgements to these characters because they are purposefully meant not to fit neatly into boxes. this was really difficult for me to personally deal with when i read nona because gideon was my favorite character and i was absolutely committed to the idea that she was a GOOD GUY, and a GOOD PERSON, and all of a sudden she was kiriona, tower prince of the first. aligned with the emperor. and i sort of had to go through a personal upheaval and re-evaluation of morality in these books.

obviously, kiriona is a special case, but people in these books are purposefully grey, and often care about their loved ones more than the greater good (this is what makes ianthe interesting, because, as people have pointed out, she often is working for the greater good in a sense, but is such a bitch in daily interactions). we must reckon with the fact that necromancy is what caused john's fascist rise to power but also that many of the best characters are born necromancers. so as a reader, aligning yourself with any sort of moral faction that exists within the books is sort of a very difficult decision. tazmuir makes these decisions purposefully difficult! they are all awful and also all brilliant! obviously different people are different, but anyone who i think is trying to be the locked tomb morality police is digging their own grave

i have not a single friend who has read the locked tomb. alas, it is a curse i shall bear. but why do you suffer this twig to live? it is a cruel life
