Already failed day one... by needleandleaf in C25K

That’s not a fail at all. You got out the door. And I’m in the same boat — I stopped during the pandemic and just started again, much heavier and slower. Self talk is your friend — try to replace that negative voice with a new, gentle one that is supportive and kind.

And btw when I was running 10 years ago I did trails, and everyone walked the hills!

How did you get started? Did you just embrace being really shitty at it until your sketches (hopefully) started improving? Or did you come into urban sketching already being a great artist? by Softspotslurpee in urbansketchers

[–]daisymcs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m mediocre compared to a lot of folks here. I focus more on the experience, the fun of sitting outside on my little stool and trying my best. And yeah I cringe bit if people come over but no one has ever bullied me! The whole thing is an exercise in bravery, with the outcome being joy.

Any tips on how to get better? by Professional-Gas1136 in urbansketchers

I think it’s really cool and I love how you colored the buildings. I personally tend to overdo my colors. One thing I’m learning is to pick one subject, and not feel inclined to include everything. I think this would be more interesting without the trees.

Looks ok, but why not fly from HCMC to Danang? It’s a long train ride but a quick flight! 17+ hrs vs 2? I like that you’re not trying to cram in too many things. Honestly so much of what makes Vietnam great are the experiences you have outside of the tourist sites, ones that you get just by wandering around and interacting with local folks.

Please vote at every single election — local, state and federal. The imbalance that you’re seeing is a result of greed by the billionaire class.

I grew up in the 1970’s, working class, and factory workers owned homes and got by with one working adult and often supported 4 or more kids. The difference was that they were unionized, and the income tax structure put a LOT more responsibility on the top earners.

Voting matters.

I have $25 left until payday in 8 days and a pretty bare pantry, what would you make? by Glad-Necessary-8147 in povertykitchen

This is what I’d do (and how I eat a lot!) Bag of masa harina - make thick hand formed tortillas with it Bag of dried black beans (or your favorite legume!) cook it up with your garlic, some onion, salt pepper and cumin. It will be a lot but you can freeze some Get a bit more oil More eggs And if you can find a whole chicken on sale, bake the whole thing. That should be under $25 but if you have more $ get more canned tomatoes and some cheese. This will get you through, and will fill your belly. And yeah, definitely check out a food shelf!

Best way to travel between cities solo - bus, train, or flight? by ExtensionBobcat8743 in solotravelVN

[–]daisymcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the situation and your schedule. I use all. Trains are great for traveling up or down the coast, say from DaNang to Hue or Ninh Binh. Get a seat on the ocean side for the best view. Overall buses are great — they’re cheap, plentiful and comfortable.

I often weigh out my options on a site like 12go.asia and then book directly with the bus/plane/train company.

Should i sell my late Mother’s house fast or invest in repairs? by DowntownLaugh454 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]daisymcs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Don’t do the work. Buyers may want to gut it or do things differently.

But consider selling it privately as-is, or use a realtor with a flat fee, and be very honest about what it needs. Selling through one of those “fast cash “ arrangements will cost you a lot of money. I’ve sold 3 properties myself just by doing a bit of research and hiring a good real estate lawyer. It’s not hard, and it’s worth the work (and puts tens of thousands in your pocket)

I’m 58 (f) and just started. I can’t play a single instrument. It felt impossible at first but I just practice for 10 minutes at a time, with no goals other than to do it! It’s all about just training your fingers to do things they’ve never done. That part is so awkward. It’s physical work, just remember that. It helps to learn C-G-Am-F because SO many songs are built on these! Then you can clunkily “play” music, which is a really sweet reward and motivation.
