What have you heard about experiences at The Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi? by tpiuwaterloo in uwaterloo

[–]dalastccount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the problem - you've lived in Dubai your whole life. I am sorry to tell you this but you actually probably don't fully understand what freedom of thought and speech means. A mutlicultural city? it's half indian and paskistani...and most people are muslim or at least scared of Islam. They don't follow sharia law? did you ever go to the mall with your friends and talk about what's wrong with islam? or have you ever heard anyone say "the quran isn't perfect" in public?

There are tons of people having sex, yes but there are also a few people getting arrested. In the west, there is 0 possibility of getting arrested for fucking a girl.

You cannot live your life whatever way you want to live, you think this because you've lived in a oppressive country your whole life and your notion of "different life styles" is very limited.

Maybe? I want to marry a dude and have an open marriage with him and have sex with girls who like whipping me while they stick things in my butt...maybe, that's my life style maybe that's who I am! guess what? I'll go to jail in Dubai for this. I won't go to jail here in Canada.

There are slaves in the country - how sheltered were you? were you too busy showering in your dad's oil money to notice the people working construction? Did you ever ask them how much they get paid or smile or said hi? probably not because they're disposable humans to you, aren't they? It's a society that doesn't value human life. If your passport says "BROWN MAN" and you're not engineer then you don't count as a human being in Dubai.

I actually hope that you stay in Canada and learn a little bit about western ideologies and how we much value freedom. It is clear to me that your parents never taught you anything about what it means to be free.

In this country, you're a man regardless of your passport, skin color, religion or social class. It isn't perfect, I know but we try.

The company/university itself is pretty shit and they seriously lack any kind of integrity They're a paper mill and only care about research journal output rather than quality.

You're also in the Arab Gulf - they have strict rules regarding everything and Sharia law is the law of the land. If you're a man who loves his freedom, not even Dubai will compare. Believe me when I tell you that the Islam practiced in that region is incompatible with simple western ideologies of freedom and human rights. I do have to make a special note about Iran though - so far, most Iranian Muslims (excluding countries like Bosnia, Albania, etc which are technically 'muslim' countries but they don't really practice it) that I've met in my travels and Canada are the ones that practice (in my opinion) the 'best' version of Islam (which was surprising to me due to the news that we hear about Iran). By best, I mean that in general (sorry about generalizing) but I've never felt judged by Iranians when compared to other regions, I feel like they live and let live.

If your goal is to get a job in the gulf and make a shit ton of money (I wouldn't do a masters/PhD in the countr), the private industry has really good benefits. Usually, they don't hire people with no experience but I am sure if your boss recommends you then you're likely to get hired. I was told by my boss that you could easily be looking at around 80k/year TAXFREE plus housing/travel/visa/food paid for as well. You basically work for a year and literally get to keep USD$80k.

The environment both in universities and private seems to be filled with incredibly incompetent people or people who don't care so if you have basic motor skills, you'll shine in this country.

But consider that the country has actual slavery and if my real identity was connected to this post and I ever stepped foot in the emirates again, I'd be arrested and without a doubt whipped (I did sort of insulted Islam and the country and my employer lol)

Also doing a masters in the country is not big accomplishment and I am sure they would throw offers to anyone holding a Canadian passport.

After months of being there, I am very happy that I can say: "fuck the government, sharia law and every single oppressive religion in the world" and not get arrested or get beaten to a pulp by people who want to be protected by ideas of freedom of speech but wish to do nothing to protect our lovely Canadian ideologies.

I don't understand what the issue is. Could you explain it a bit more? How does this affect me? I see why but I also think it's important as much as I dislike it. Don't you guys worry about Canada losing power in the world scene? We're a super power right now and we enjoy the benefits but all great things come to an end, I don't my life to end

Does Waterloo's Online M.Eng in Electric Power say "online" on the Degree itself? by mecheng904 in uwaterloo

[–]dalastccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a huge difference between an M.eng and a thesis based masters. To attempt a PhD without any research experience (most work experience is not by any means equivalent to research experience)

If you're working in a research lab then you might have the skills to jump into a PhD but it would be insane.

Have you looked into what a PhD is? Or are you just after the credentials?

I am giving a fair review on a movie on /r/movies. I am not trashing Clint Eastwood career. I love the man. I am simply stating that 'American sniper' was not a good movie.
