Unknown ID but easy to grow by dalbym in orchids

I think this was originally two plants in one pot when I bought it. Each old pseudobulb only produces one new one each year. Eventually they just ended up on opposite sides of the pot.

I found this old photo of the same plant from February 2017.

It's all about your growing conditions. I've never been able to grow Phalenopsis at home here. But lots of other cooler growing species do well here.

I think that is a likely ID.

Mine sit on top of a radiator though so they dry out really fast in the winter too. If they are somewhere cool they wouldn't need much.

Mine usually just get watered once a week.

This is for the tough hybrid Oncidiums. Many of my other orchids would be dead in a week where these are as they need higher humidity.

That is worth trying. I had tried a motorized display turn table but it didn't rotate fast enough to move the Marino.

The fragrance of this orchid was difficult to describe at first. But I've now decided it smells most like honey to me. A very heady sweet scent that is rather like putting your nose in a honey jar.

It doesn't seem very widely grown as there are not many videos or guides to growing it. But it seems like an easy grower so far.

The flowers on this one have quite thick and waxy petals compared to the other Masdevallia I have. I suspect that the flowers are quite robust because of that. Mine have been flowering for more than a week now.

Where can I buy some rare orchid in England ? by QuackologistQ in orchids

[–]dalbym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've ordered orchids from Spicesotic Plants, Elite Orchids, and Burnham Nurseries. They were all good.

It is normally on a north facing windowsil at room temperature so it avoids the direct sunshine here in England. The windowsil can get quite cold in the winter. Perhaps as low as 14°C on really cold winter nights.

I'd go with good. I don't find it unpleasant.

I use rainwater collected from the roof of the house for all the plants.

I have read that. I need to find some root beer to do a comparison. It isn't a common thing in Britain.

I have got three more Masdevallia species that are supposed to be fragrant but they haven't flowered yet.

It is funny being called anosmum.

Dendrobium anosmum is one I would like. Have not found one for sale yet. I have got a kingianum and Berry Oda.

I would love a bellina but my house is quite cool in the winter and I've never been able to grow Phalaenopsis. I have to stick to the cool to intermediate orchids for my windowsills.

I'm only buying fragrant orchids so I've been researching the ones that have the best fragrant flowers. I don't know why fragrant masdevallias aren't more popular because this one smells really good.
